Brown Postgame Thoughts…

Kudos to the team for the second half, that’s how you drop the hammer.

Brown isn’t good, but they aren’t terrible either. That was a fine matchup coming out of Covid.

Glad Buddy saw buckets go down.

Jim Jr had some good moments but had some seriously What moments. I really like him as a player, I just wish he could do like 10% more. But he’s one of my faves, along with Edwards.

The guys that can’t shoot won’t have that fixed here. And that’s not a Syracuse thing, that’s a college thing. Benny needs to be totally re-calibrated. Again, I keep harping on this, Scottie Barnes should be who he aspires to be.

Liked the game Joe had. He dribbled too much at times, but especially his reliance on his behind the back dribble at like 30+ feet out. He’s not tight with that move. Kind of picking nits tho with that.

Let’s get the next one at Cornell and get some momentum.

Fun game

We aren't going to shoot 62% from 3p every time (interesting better than our FT% that game). It does show how fun this team can be when the shots fall. And a very good sign to see a strong start to the second half instead of of letting the other team get back into it

It seems like the time off allowed the team to mentally recalibrate and people didn't seem gassed. No one played over 30 minutes either.

Going forward still many question marks (defense, depth, etc.), and won't get any more 15 day breaks without a game. However, seeing how it looks when everything is clicking gives me hope we can hang with anyone in the right circumstances.

I think Benny literally has the Yips .. he had a suddenness of movement and explosion in the first few games that are just gone .. you don’t lose athletic ability in a few weeks at his age

I can’t name one thing that Benny does well. He’s an athlete that has no idea how to play. Early in the season his passing was probably his best asset. Even that has disappeared.

He does a lot really well. He hasn't lost all those skills that made him a 5 star player. He isn't comfortable. He is playing scared. He needs to get more time without getting pulled to get comfortable.

Marginal at best ? They’re as good as teams we’ve lost to . The boys put it on em good and for the second time this year turned it up in the second half

I was particularly impressed with the Jessie / joe high screen and roll dynamic that they seem to have ironed out with all this practice time

The success of a screen isn’t only dependent on the screener, but also the motion / action of the player the screen is being set for .. you have to properly run your defender into the screen cleanly if you want it to work .. and joe seems to have figured that part out
Really ...you think the boys put it on them good...we're talking Brown here.

I’ve never seen a player that always seems to be in “the wrong place - wrong time” on a basketball court as much as him. It’s incredible to watch.
Agree but he had some positives, too, which we can’t say every game. One that stood out for me was when he has the ball isoed. I could already see the awkward drive and miss and quick hook coming…but he nicely passed out and they swung to buddy for three. No stats for Bennie but he made a play that enabled the three and kept the flow of the offense. Was nice to see.

That’s what happens when you don’t play hungry. Too much jogging and standing. Everything is passive. Doesn’t bust it to fill the lanes. Against those small kids from Brown he should have been BEGGING for the ball.

We lost to Colgate, VCU, and Georgetown. Brown is better than Colgate and about on par with the other two schools.

He made a couple nice defensive plays also where he anticipated where the offensive player was cutting to and he got to the spot first which prevented an easy basket and/or foul. I was very happy for Benny as he was extremely demonstratively happy for Chris Lavalle. Benny doesn't always show his emotions but he did for Chris.

Bennie is trying too hard to get playing time because Coach doesn't let him play though any mistakes ... why his play has regressed as the season has gone on....the starters can shoot 3 for 20 or grab 2 rebounds in two games and still play 38 min ....

I disagree. I would argue JB has given Benny more rope than almost any freshman I can recall in some time given how poorly he has played. Think about how he treated Fab Melo.
I suspect the reality of the transfer portal is a part of this.

1-3-1 brown observations which obviously helped turn the tide in the 2nd half:

1) Buddy is effective in the high post, his size and guile are strengths there... He's much better there than at the top of the zone... Plus he rebounds better there..

2) Joe actually was raising his arms in the air at the top of the 1-3-1... I always wondered why he didn't do that in the 2-3... Maybe because he's out there alone he feels the need to be more active? Anyways I liked it..

3) Symir at the post in the 1-3-1 was not as effective... He's smaller and wants to move out of there too quickly... Maybe we should run 2-3 when he's in the game and switch back with buddy... Just kkep the opposing offenses guessing and off balance... Changeups...

Symir definitely struggled at first when inserted in that D. I think you're right, he's more active in the standard 2-3 than Buddy, so that switch might be effective as you suggested.

Fab sadly was out of shape his freshman year not mentioning any off court issues. This isn’t even taking into account that we had Rick Jackson, a senior, in Fab’s freshman year. Baye Moussa Keita was also in his freshman year. I remember how disappointed I was after all the hype how heavy and out of shape he was as a freshman. To his credit, he did really turn around his on court productivity his sophomore year.

If he hadn’t been pulled before the NCAAs, we win the championship. It hurts my stomach even now to type that.

Benny had one good move going to his left. He’s used that a couple times this year. It looks much more fluid and natural than his move to the right ending in a short fadeaway that he pulls the string on. He holds the shot until he is descending rather than just releasing it softly at the top of his jump. His defender tonight had no chance of blocking that if he releases it at the highest point of his jump.
It almost looks like he has a hitch in it and is hesitant to release the shot. And then he releases it too late on his way down and the shot ends up short. Happened twice on mid range shots that should be a good spot for him to shoot and score from. Its tough to watch.

Yep, it's like while he is up in the air he is thinking about the best time to release the shot, instead of just shooting.

symir is good in the 2-3 ...hes a plus defender at the guard spot...but liability at forward imo

as to his shot and form...its not a work of art but its clearly imprved and looks better than early season. any time hes open he should shoot.

i think some people underestimate the mental aspect of benny's performance level...i think his issues are entirely mental and confidence/emotional at this point...and not much to do with his talent or skill level. yes there are some rough edges (low arc, hanging too long to shoot etc) there with technique etc but he was jumping out of the gym the first couple games and super active and now he plays below the rim for some reason. need to get him dunks etc...hes probably the type like jg3 that feeds off energy of crowd emotions etc. need to get him some dunks. he does seem almost comically out of position in the zone at times...which is hard to figure. ...

Always thought Tyus' shot was similar. That hitch we complained about was thinking too much.

But, Benny's high school videos don't show that hitch. He looks pretty fluid when shooting. I never saw Tyus shoot a nice smooth shot.

You don't get to stay in the game if you give up an easy basket or weak foul.

Teams are going to attack him immediately when he enters games.

Being a 5 star I'm happy to see if he looks better next year but at the moment we're asking for the opponent to go on a run if he comes in. Cornell might be the last chance he gets to really expand his role.

I do think our 5 starters are all capable of logging 40 minutes credit to them for their conditioning. Of course its not ideal but then again you always want your best players to play if possible.

He had an opportunity to dunk late in the game on a feed around the block, and sort of unconfidently put it in off the glass, I thought to myself why didnt he elevate to dunk that?
