Bryan Blair officially hired as New Syracuse AD

I had similar concerns and then realized that it must have been in the forefront of their minds when they hired him. There must already be a plan in place. No way they are starting over.
That’s what I’m hoping.

I’ll say this. There is something to be said for a university with a new Chancellor and a new AD.

No offense to Kent and JW but if I’m a top tier coach interviewing and they’re feeding me promises of a new day for Cuse hoops and a big time uptick in resources, I’m going to be skeptical and say yea heard that before.

But now it’s 2 weeks later and the new chancellor and the new AD know they are going to be judged immediately on their decision on the basketball coach. If they screw up the hoops Coach pick they are going to have a rough start and may never be forgiven honestly by students.

We may actually see sports take a legit step forward now with new leadership which I think is appealing to top tier candidates. Or maybe the better way to say it is that if it were Kent and JW still or god forbid Lyke then HC candidates would be more likely to say not interested because the last coach was not supported by them.

The chancellor isn't getting judged on the basketball coach lol.

I’m anxious about the way Syracuse.com is positioning it as Blair making the basketball coaching hire and that’s his first order of business. He’s a brand new AD here, doesn’t know the culture and the school yet, and yet they’re positioning it like he’s going to be making this seismic decision about the future of the school on his first week on the job. hopefully Wildhack, Haynie, key BOT members like Tirico, Lally and others will be closely involved in the discussion. Am I overreacting?
At SEC schools they often fire the AD and coach at the same time, so the AD jumps in and makes the hire. I can see the benefit either way for Blair: come in and make your mark immediately; or let someone else take the blame if the hire fails. But I'd rather make the hire myself. If basketball can fill the Dome again then the AD will have a lot more money to play around with.

As far as I can tell, Blair will make the basketball HC decision, but trust me, he will consult with Wildhack, Hayne, the board, Melo, etc.

You could raise a ton of money and still have poor judgement on Coaches
Aint that the truth.

The first worry I would have about this new AD is that he has 0 experience with the ACC. That is not required but it surely would help him navigate. And as SoCar is a total nobody in every way in the SEC, all his SC and SoCar ties will avail little that will be positive in being Syracuse AD.

Not having any experience with the ACC is a positive in my opinion.

I agree. The PTSD of former AD Gross and his hire of "outside our territory" former FHC Grob, is still haunting me.
If, and I do mean, IF ADBBB is making the call, I'd hope he'd take his time, weigh any/all input and suggestions before pulling the trigger on his choice.
We are still Syracuse basketball, and most any coach would love the prospect of playing in front of 20k+ fans on a regular Tuesday night, not to mention 30k+ if we're winning and one of the CBB "Big Boyz" come to town.

I think the process is too far along for Blair to make the decision. He hasn't be involved in the process and the process has already narrowed the list down by the search committee and JW. While it might be his "hire" officially, he will be guided in the direction things are already going. He isn't going to come in and make some random coach hire that the board, search committee, and JW haven't already vetted behind the scenes. Too late in the party for that randomness to happen, with all the major players already involved.

I like your insights!

The mention of "search committee"--I have seen the AD Committee identified, but not the one for head BB coach. Can you link that, please?
