SU Human Resource Complaint Towards Heather Lyke

Completely disagree. They did an article on Nick as well. Lyke got decimated in a an article that went national. Kent and Candace are helping out Lyke and Lyke was at the game showing she won't hide.
Again multiple board insiders, Carlson and Waters are strongly intimating that Nick is the selection.
It should not be surprising after Lyke had all the negative publicity, that she would run an aggressive campaign to counter that. By the way Kent's letter was just something she can use for her next interview.
Syracuse let her do the article… she doesn’t need to impress the fans, she needed to impress the school. Her plan is irrelevant if she wasn’t getting the job yet Syracuse let her do the interview… I’m not saying the insiders aren’t telling the truth, just that it would very weird for the school to let her (and for her to want to) do the interview if she didn’t get the job. If the insiders know, odds are lyke knows too, but again she did it… I’m praying I’m wrong

I don’t think I can come up with another sentence that talks about the interview

Plus she's at the game and seen prominently standing and chatting with Melo in the first row ...I don't like the optics here...Not the behavior of someone who's going away... Or mebbs she is and she's just going out like the bull in the china shop she is?? That is my hope... Not worried tho...🤪

Is she still actively employed?

Did she spend any time at the game speaking with the new Chancellor? Maybe her and Melo just talked about how they tried, but came up short. And he wished her luck in Michigan. At least, that's what I am believing.

I would like to see what you think he should have said. Something like “I know this guy isn’t qualified but he’s got a lot of internal supporters at Syracuse, and they forced my hand so maybe a miracle will happen and this will work out”?

His job is literally to SELL THE DECISION TO THE PUBLIC. What he said isn’t some black mark against him - it shows that he’s a consummate professional who did what is expected of him or anyone in that role. That is - sell the decision as a great one even if you fought like hell against it behind closed doors and still disagree with it.

The complaints about Wildhack’s are often so childish that they end up sounding like a three year old toddler’s tantrum. This is a shining example. There’s certainly parts of his track record that can be legitimately criticized - “he did his best to get the community excited about Red and set him up for success” is not on any sane adult individual’s list.

In my opinion, he could've chosen his words differently and still get the public behind the hire, all while simultaneously being the "consummate professional." Perhaps, along the lines of Autry taking the next step, being exciting about the opportunity ahead, etc. However, I'm not a speech writer and don't profess to be. I just think, again, IMO, when you look at the words he voluntarily chose, it comes across, well, "selling a bill of goods."

Was Autry "exposed to every aspect to the sport" when everyone knew he hadn't been since he had never been a head coach, let alone one at the P4 level? And that being so, how is that "being uniquely prepared" for the job? No, so why spew it. The Syracuse community is pretty knowlegeable about its hoops. "Earned?" That "earned" comment of his reminded me of his "equity" comment about JB, just the season before when he was feeling all the noise about JB. Remember that interview? That "equity" tanked pretty quick, (seeminglly as fast as the stock market mention just recently in some other speech "hitting the 50k mark") as JB was out by the following season's end.

The fact that he said in his speech that "Adrian's not here because he's an alum, or because he was a player, or because he was an associate head coach" speaks for itself. The reality is, it's exactly why he was here, and, most knew it, so quite insincere. Moreover, he wasn't going to sell that "bill of goods" to anyone, not even to himself. Generally, folks are aware of those who've walked the walk vs. otherwise.

Again, just my opinion on an anonymous message board. That said, in regards to your; "I would like to see what you think he should have said." You couldn't care less. If you were being honest, you wouldn't have suggested something as assine as you did. So, there's that. Additionally, your mentioning of a "three year old toddler's tantrum" is a somewhat ironic, considering your own rant comes across exactly as that. Furthermore, your apparent unwillingness in refraining from making things personal with your intentional slight; "not on any sane adult individual's list" speaks volumes as well.

I’ll ignore the rest of your comment and just focus on this particular part, because it illustrates why your complaint is based on fundamentally misunderstanding the role of the AD, the requirements of the position, and how a person in that role communicates to fans through media.

Red getting the gig because of his ties to Syracuse was highly likely. And as a result, it was a possible reason for fans to be less than enthusiastic about the hiring. That made it a huge elephant in the room that HAD TO BE addressed. And it HAD TO BE addressed in - broadly- the way Wildhack did, by actively dismissing it as a reason for his hiring. (He could have taken a slightly different approach I will cover later though). It was not an optional part of Red’s introduction, it was mandatory and Wildhack would not have been doing his job if he didn’t say that.

When you are trying to sell someone on your idea, product, or in this case coaching hire - you have to address the concerns the potential buyers have. You cannot ignore them, you cannot pretend they do not exist - you HAVE TO address them directly. It’s almost a boilerplate part of a hiring press conference in pro and college sports - the GM or AD or President will say “he’s not here because (insert reasons the organization knows fans are concerned about) - he’s here because he’s the best person for the job”.

Really, the fact that he went with such a boilerplate approach came across to me as bordering on an act of protest on his part - making sure astute fans knew their concerns were valid and he shared them. Because if he was personally sold on hiring Red, it would have incorporated his ties to Syracuse in a more positive way, something like: “Red is the best man for the job - he’s been exposed to every aspect of the sport, and his background as a player and associate head coach makes him uniquely qualified to be the head coach at Syracuse”. If I’m the AD hiring a truly highly qualified candidate who has ties to the organization - I would highlight those ties. Instead, Wildhack minimized them. Wildhack did the absolute bare minimum required here - that should have told you where he stood.

The problem is you don’t know how to interpret “press conference” speech. The result is you’re upset about something he said which you knew wasn’t true, he knew wasn’t true - and HE TOLD YOU WASN’T TRUE if you knew how to translate press conference into plain English. The comment about not being a sane complaint was unnecessary - after reading your reply I think it’s just not knowing how to digest what is said in press conferences.

I appreciate the manner in which you responded here. And, providing such particular perspective. Thank you.

We all can benefit from “seeking to understand.”

A few things have me worried, even tho Ive been told not to be worried. syr. com article, HL at the womens lacrosse game on friday night with Pete Sala and HL at the hoops game chatting up melo. I know Ive been told its NC, but this is SU, I dont believe anything until there is a ackward press conference.

Did she spend any time at the game speaking with the new Chancellor?

I mean I wasn't trying to gather intel lol, I was just sitting in my seat cramming nachos into my face and noticed them when they walked by. That said, I saw each of them multiple times, but not once together nor even around the same time. Never had any impression whatsoever that they were there working together. New chancellor seemed pretty relaxed and happy to be there. Lyke didn't look unhappy or anything but it felt more like she was "on a mission" than the chancellor.

So, Melo was minding his business at the half and Lyke sought him out. He stood up and gave her one of those half-hearted-hug greetings you give women you know, and then they just had a quick chat. I'd guess it was <1 minute. Long enough for me to snap a picture and point it out to my mother sitting next to me. Not long enough for me to wait for the dude standing in the way to go somewhere else for a cleaner photo. Melo didn't seem to have strong emotions one way or another, the interaction was clearly notable but it didn't worry me.

Anyway sorry to start rumors but I didn't really have time to type all that on my phone at the game. Between all the stuff here, all the articles, and what I saw there, if I had to guess it would be that the job is not currently hers but also the decision isn't 100% yet. We know she wants the job, it'd only make sense for her to do a final sprint just in case. And while I know she's not our choice, it also doesn't make sense for the university to burn any bridges; who knows what she knows, where she ends up next, etc.

This is my thought also.if Nc was the choice wouldn’t he have been at the last game of the year and a few days before an Announcement supposedly happening. Arrows are pointing towards Lyke

I've never met someone professionally who was a candidate for a job, go around and start walking around within those company's offices. They stay quiet and out of the way until it's publicly announced.

Yeah this. Lyke already works for the school. Nothing about going to the game is outside her current job description.

If I'd seen Carparelli talking to Melo I wouldn't post it here until I'd already tried to sell it to Pete Thamel. 😂

I think it's premature to read much into Lyke being highly visible this weekend. She's clearly trying to show her face in an attempt to blunt the damage from the DO piece. You can't hide when stuff like that happens.

If Haynie is the guy that everyone says he is, the last thing he wants is a firestorm of discontent with his first big hire.

At this point SU could hire almost anyone other than Lyke, e.g. Reggie Terry, and the slice of the fan base represented here would be more or less happily relieved. Maybe that's the plan all along, 3D chess.
