I get my Syracuse football news from you guys. There is no longer any other source worth paying attention to.

He's a good writer. He's a terrible reporter. He's very good at special interest type stories. He's not a good sports reporter and there's a big difference. He also didn't have a good grasp of the subject matter.
If Cohen sucked, a paper like Memphis wouldn't give him an enterprise spot, which IMO is a great beat to have. Gets to cover football, hoops, and anything that piques his interest.
Nobody is perfect 8-12 months into their first job yet many of you expected perfection. He had some poor stuff here and there but that's how you learn and grow.
Good luck to him in Memphis.
Don't be so sure. It's a dying industry. They can pay young guys less. A lot of major newspapers aren't even daily anymore. For example, times picayune. The promotion is more a testament as to the changing of times then him being coveted talent.

He had a couple of rough patches but I never thought he was as bad as some others did.

I don't think some of you realize just how much of a jump this is for him. Forget about Memphis football and basketball. He also has SEC football and an NBA team. It's 5 times what he had here, so someone was impressed. Those jobs aren't a dime a dozen and I bet there were a hundred people or more that wanted that job. And while the newspaper may be a dying industry, writing isn't necessarily. The papers are just going to less paper and more online. The articles still have to be written.

I'm sure it costs less for a younger person. Works that way in my business too. But you can't just hire any young guy.
Who cares about circulation if you're a writer? They write the article and it either goes in the paper or it goes online. When the PS went to 2-3 days of deliver the number of articles done by the sports writers didn't go down.

cuseinchina said:Cohen was a decent writer but sloppy and emotionally immature. He alienated everyone. Needed a fresh start and someone helped the guy out. I hope he learned his lessons here. But seriously he only lasted a year - this was a bailout. but a good one for him given that the population there is double syracuse metro, and expectations of writing quality may be lower there just looking at some of the stuff on the website. I actually felt really bad for the guy, but at the same time he brought all the criticism on himself. But any 22 year old deserves a fresh start - so good for him. The remaining writers are way more appropriate for this market.
I don't know, I am speculating based on a bunch of stuff that makes that seem the most likely scenario. I am allowed to do that not being a reporter. Cohen never figured out that he can't do the same. Wish the guy well, hope he learned, and am glad he won't spew his negativity here any longer. How do you know someone " bailed" him out?

Michael Cohen, one of our Syracuse University football writers, has accepted a position at another newspaper and is leaving the Syracuse Media Group effective Friday.
Cohen took a job as a sports enterprise reporter at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tenn., where he will write about Southeastern Conference football, University of Memphis basketball and football, and the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA.
Looks like Carlson, Mink, and Axe going forward.

The youth movement is a lot more prevalent in media.
A newspaper writer shouldn't care about circulation?
