BTW, if you haven't noticed, Cohen is gone

I get my Syracuse football news from you guys. There is no longer any other source worth paying attention to.

There is a TON of truth in what you wrote. Not being an X and O's kind of guy, I for one certainly appreciate the keen eyes and analyses (plural of analysis) of pre- and post-game posters. I am a more knowledgeable fan for spending time here. Thanks guys!

That being said, I miss reading Dave Rahme. Always looked forward to seeing his byline in the PS.

Stupid post. He's written some damn good articles. I think you are envious.

Yeah I'm so envious of him spreading baseless rumors on twitter about one of our most important recruits and then him blowing it off as if it's no big deal. Just dripping with envy here

He may be able to write, but he sucks as a beat reporter. You clearly don't seem to understand the difference.

The only thing I'm envious of is how good Dave R and Donnie Webb really were - I took them for granted.

He had a couple of rough patches but I never thought he was as bad as some others did.

He's a good writer. He's a terrible reporter. He's very good at special interest type stories. He's not a good sports reporter and there's a big difference. He also didn't have a good grasp of the subject matter.

If Cohen sucked, a paper like Memphis wouldn't give him an enterprise spot, which IMO is a great beat to have. Gets to cover football, hoops, and anything that piques his interest.

Nobody is perfect 8-12 months into their first job yet many of you expected perfection. He had some poor stuff here and there but that's how you learn and grow.

Good luck to him in Memphis.

Don't be so sure. It's a dying industry. They can pay young guys less. A lot of major newspapers aren't even daily anymore. For example, times picayune. The promotion is more a testament as to the changing of times then him being coveted talent.

I was actually going to post the same thing. It's a volume driven industry and when volume is down, we all know what gets cut. Could be a cost cutting measure there just like what we experienced with the PS.

I don't think some of you realize just how much of a jump this is for him. Forget about Memphis football and basketball. He also has SEC football and an NBA team. It's 5 times what he had here, so someone was impressed. Those jobs aren't a dime a dozen and I bet there were a hundred people or more that wanted that job. And while the newspaper may be a dying industry, writing isn't necessarily. The papers are just going to less paper and more online. The articles still have to be written.

He's not a beat reporter kinda guy. Didn't understand where the fence was that he had to tightrope...but dude could write.

Ironically, the only thing he wrote that really annoyed me, was his twitter rumor about AJ Long switching positions. Which may be true now with Edouard coming aboard at QB as well. Still wasn't right, but whatever.

Good for him to get a promotion. I'm sure he's happy to move on. There are worse places to live than Memphis.

These companies aren't throwing money at writers. They
go young because it's more affordable. Can't tell me that didn't factor in. Plus we don't even know the job he is doing. Either way though, good for him.

Btw commercial appeal's circulation is less than the post standards

I'm sure it costs less for a younger person. Works that way in my business too. But you can't just hire any young guy.

Who cares about circulation if you're a writer? They write the article and it either goes in the paper or it goes online. When the PS went to 2-3 days of deliver the number of articles done by the sports writers didn't go down.

The youth movement is a lot more prevalent in media.

A newspaper writer shouldn't care about circulation?

The guy was really negative for the first bunch of months, got into it publicly with McDonald, and was pompous and argumentative with fans on twitter.

He got better - and he has some talent, but I hope he learned his lesson about what lines to cross with the hand that “feeds” ...

I have no ill will and hope it was a good learning exp. And I'm happy for our local coverage, things can be negative as it is...

Cohen was a decent writer but sloppy and emotionally immature. He alienated everyone. Needed a fresh start and someone helped the guy out. I hope he learned his lessons here. But seriously he only lasted a year - this was a bailout. but a good one for him given that the population there is double syracuse metro, and expectations of writing quality may be lower there just looking at some of the stuff on the website. I actually felt really bad for the guy, but at the same time he brought all the criticism on himself. But any 22 year old deserves a fresh start - so good for him. The remaining writers are way more appropriate for this market.

How do you know someone " bailed" him out?

I don't know, I am speculating based on a bunch of stuff that makes that seem the most likely scenario. I am allowed to do that not being a reporter. Cohen never figured out that he can't do the same. Wish the guy well, hope he learned, and am glad he won't spew his negativity here any longer.

Michael Cohen, one of our Syracuse University football writers, has accepted a position at another newspaper and is leaving the Syracuse Media Group effective Friday.

Cohen took a job as a sports enterprise reporter at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tenn., where he will write about Southeastern Conference football, University of Memphis basketball and football, and the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA.

Now he can cover his beloved Huskies when they come to town

He was more of a "column" writer and we already have one of those. I never disliked him as much as some others. Say what you want about his tactics, but kid could write a story.

Looks like Carlson, Mink, and Axe going forward.

He's partnering up with Toad Hunt at NJ.com. Fits his dumpster-fire writing tone better.

Crap...

Mem/ Memphis Cor/Cortland SU Oh Lord

Pretty big paper and covering SEC football down there is a huge opportunity for the young man. If he can mature his trade he could really make some professional strides.

They do care about circulation, but it's not the only factor. As bees said, decreased circulation doesn't mean a decrease in articles. In fact, when the Post Standard and other newspapers decreased their circulation, the number of articles written by writers increased because there's no limit on the articles that can be published online. The newspaper industry is shifting to online. Newhouse changed the Newspaper Journalism major to Newspaper and Online Journalism. They also changed the Broadcast Journalism major to Broadcast and Digital Journalism. These are examples of the shift in media to online.

I'm impartial when it comes to Cohen, but I love seeing another Syracuse University Newhouse student make it, especially considering I'm one myself. Good for him for being able to cover the best football conference in the country as well as a professional basketball team. Not too bad for someone who graduated from college last May.

Here's a link to the job description for anyone who is interested: http://www.scripps.com/job-details?rid=6834
