Buffalo Bills 2017 Why do I put myself through this season thread

Always good to the beat the Jets. Few thoughts:

1) Neither in this world nor an alternate one is it a good idea to run Tolbert wide when you have Shady McCoy on your team. Keep him between the tackles, please. McCoy was as usual the most dynamic playmaker on the Bills. Like the way he was utilized today in both running and passing.

2) Generally thought that the offensive play calling was acceptable, minus the Tolldozer sweeps. Tyrod hit some throws down the middle, which was encouraging. The INT in the end zone was fluky but the throw itself was high and behind Clay. Jury remains out on the QB position.

3) Wide receivers...yikes. Great individual play by Matthews and a couple nice catches by Zay Jones but beyond that it really didn't seem like there was a lot of separation.

4) I like the fact that there were no strange use of timeouts that Rex made famous. Strange feeling to have all three at the end of the game. Good debut by McDermott at the helm.

5) defense could be good this year but hard to draw any conclusions against the Jets, they aren't exactly an offensive juggernaut. Really liked the run defense...let's hope the shoulder injury to Gaines is something short term.

Bottom line: 1-0 and on top of the AFC East...

It was nice to see WRs capable of YAC.

Was staring to forget you could further the ball with your legs after you catch a pass.

Some thoughts...

Defensive game plan was well thought up and executed. We clearly didn't want them to run and they certainly didn't. Dialed up pressure at the right times and got home once. Impressed with the tackling by really everyone. Nice to see a fundamentally sound D.

Shady! There is just something about seeing him running in the open field carrying the ball one handed that is just so friggin awesome. I love the guy. Quickly becoming one of my favorite Bills of all time. Aside from all the obvious traits you cld list abt him he is also one tough dude and competitive as hell.

Tyrod played well - and let's not get it twisted about this Jets tanking thing, that D is still a legit NFL defense. Much much more for him to do and prove but this was a good start.

Loved the TD play to Holmes. Creative! Loved the naked bootleg to close out the game with a first down. Creative! Look forward to seeing what else Rick has in store this year.

Like Tolbert but cld do w a bit less of him. I'm a big proponent of using 3 backs in a game. Even if the third back only gets 5 snaps. Hope to see less Tolbert with some Banyard sprinkled in next week.

Hope Dawkins can take over at RT at some point this year.

Tate has not impressed me this year. Piss poor decision not calling for a fair catch on that late 4th Q punt. Plus he doesn't look explosive. Hopefully K. Clay gets a look next week.

Speaking of that 4th Q punt... gutless. Plus the Jets shld have just kicked the extra point to make it 13-14. It wasn't even the 4th Q. Our next TD made it a 2 possession game and it was basically over at that point. EXTEND THE GAME! It's like fouling when ur down at the end of a basketball game. Yeah it's not sexy but just do it!

All in all - I like this team. If you can run and you can stop the run, you shld be in most games w a chance to win. We'll know more after next week.

Tyrod Taylor looked "different". Dare I say, like an actual QB? Last year we either ran, or he threw deep or to the sideline. Yesterday was a heavy dose of throws over the middle. Still need to see more to justifiably pass over doing all things necessary to move around for a top QB in the Draft, but it was a step in the right direction and I'm interested to see how he continues to grow in this offense Week to Week.

The offense looked sharp in terms of execution. In and out of the huddle. Good pace and tempo.

Two things that worried me but may not be justified..

1). Lack of throws to the WRs. I'd like to see more from Matthews and Jones. However McDermott said that the Jets took them away by design so we focused more on our backs and tight ends.

2). Very vanilla in the second half. However, I think the coaches had a good feel for the game and realized once we got up by 9 that the Jets couldn't beat us so they just ran, ran, safe pass, punted until the clock ran out.

Defense was pretty solid. Monster run defense but the pass rush left some to be desired. However, McCown got the ball out really quick to negate any pass rush. Some soft zones underneath that got picked apart but who knows if that was by design or not. Certainly can't argue with only giving up 12 points.

All in all. I liked the coaching, the defense was solid with some players (Poyer/Hyde/White/Gaines/Humber) really popping off the screen and the offense should have really put 31 on a dang tough Jets defense if not for the Haushka miss and Clays botched TD catch.

I don't know if the Jets' players are levels below an NFL avg individually, but I took heart that the defenders flew around the field, were generally near the offensive players when they carried/caught the ball, and then tackled the players in a no-nonsense, get the guy on he ground manner.

Seemed like a response to a different type of coach, instead of make a circus tackle in going to get the guy down because THAT'S what's valued here...mindset change. Again, will be more difficult against Cam and Crew next weekend

Also liked the 6 penalty game...has to be a multi-season low.

Maybe the NFL got the message that you change out the coaches and 70% of the roster and it would be suspicious if they were the same old undisciplined group again

I do think the Jets really stink outside of Kearse so let's just take the win and be grateful we don't play Patriots for a long time

Next week will be a really good test to see where the Bills are at, how bad the Jets are etc. Hey, McDermott is a rookie HC and there are going to be plenty of growing pains, keep the team together and continue to build towards the future.

I agree the WR crew is a big concern. Matthews almost looks like a TE, and have to try and keep Shady healthy which will never be easy. God is he fun to watch though so talented in the open field

Just glad they didn't lay an egg game 1

On his long gainer it seemed like he was somehow struggling a bit. Not familiar with his game so maybe that's not abnormal. Wondering if his wheels are totally healthy. Think he had some sort of physical issue pre season but don't know if it was lower body. Just didn't seem quick even though it was a long gain.

BTW, if I'm going to hold myself accountable here...during the Patriots game the other night I said that I should be so lucky to have the referees call a "defensive holding" on the Bills' opponent on a Running play during Bills' first drive...

Well, THAT HAPPENED!

Unbelievable, a new era perhaps? (probably not)

According to Coach, Gaines should be able to play Sunday.

Looking forward to this one. Should be a good test. I think the Panthers will end up in 6-10 win range this season. I'm not sold on them being a legit SB contender.

How about Tolbert!? Had no clue what that guy would bring to the table and he impressed.

He's not gonna make people miss, but put his bowling ball of a self behind an O-Line that can open up large holes the way Incognito and Glenn can, and he's going to be really productive.

If Cam looks the way they did in Week 1, it's going to be a long year for the Panthers. Their linebackers should provide a good test for Buffalo's offense though.

Game Day! Here's what I am looking for:

1) Shady to keep up the tempo and aggression from last week. It will be interesting to see how the Bills try to neutralize Kuechly- maybe misdirection and/or running from multi back sets. Would imagine a fullback might be used often.

2) Defense is definitely facing a step up in competition today- would love to see good containment on Cam and toughness against the run. Newton is great but pressure and containment makes him more one dimensional. Paging Jerry Hughes...

3) Would love to see Matthews have a big game...the WR core is definitely in 'show me' mode in my mind. Matthews needs to demonstrate he can be that reliable first option while Jones continues to develop. It will also be interesting to see if Clay and O'Leary continue to be popular targets in Dennison's offense. My guess is the Panthers focus on Shady and Clay, forcing Tyrod to use his edge weapons or feet to beat them. Not sure that will happen.

4) 20,000 Bills fans at Bank of America stadium. Unrelated, tip of the cap to the SU student I saw yesterday rocking the EJ Manuel jersey in 102 yesterday. I have a number of questions on that choice but we can address that another time.

Go Bills!
