Buffalo Bills 2025 Thread

Making the pro bowl is a much lower bar than all pro as dudes opt out of the game all the time and their replacements are technically then “pro bowlers
That makes it even more damning given the low bar that only two guys (besides JA) can climb over.

Listened to Russo today. Really giving it to McDermott on that 3rd &11 with 2:38 left where Nix hit a Wide open Sutton who everyone who follows football knew he was going to go to. Goes back to the points myself and Steveholt have come back to with McDermotts Defense in these late situations. The rush 3 zone look he goes to in these situations has absolutely killed him.

Also defended Allen a lot felt like he didn't get a lot of help from Hardman, Cooks etc.

Read something this morning that Allen and McDermott had a rocky relationship in the beginning and that while a lot better now still not exactly great. Sounds like he signed off on this.
I've always had suspicions. Like I know camera shots can be deceiving because of what they don't show you. But it really does seem like they never ever talked to each other on the sidelines, during timeouts, ever.
But they just kept plugging along 4 years after :13.

The Dolphins hired Hafley lmao…

That's a tough job right now. Achane and Waddle are excellent but man the QB situation is a disaster, Hill doesn't want to be there and who knows what happens with him and that defense leaves a lot to be desired.

IIRC they blitzed on 1st & 2nd down and then bluffed it again & rushed 4. I guess I didn't mind it in the moment if I'm being honest; you want to mix it up a little. I think they probably wanted to make a tackle short and bring pressure again on 4th. I might've actually preferred dropping 8 cause the 4man rush just never seems to work for us.

This is what happens when the # of coaching vacancies exceeds the # of qualified candidates. The default approach is to hire the OC or DC of the moment tho not sure what Hafley did to merit inclusion in that group.

You would have thought they would have at least waited to interview their franchises legendary coach’s grandson…Strikes me as a lazy hire. GB’s defense was average this year.

And he didn't do well at B.C. and left.

With Aikman consulting I'm sure the process was sound.

I’ve never been a huge McDermott fan… but I do think he has improved. The 3rd and 11 was critical and he failed, and that has been consistent. So from that vantage point, I get the move. But Beane more and more has drafted poorly and misspent limited resources. For those that tell me who do you expect to get for the dollars they spent on Palmer, Samuel, Ogonjobi, etc., I ask you to look around the league.

The fact that they kept Ogonjobi even after his 6 game suspension on a one year deal with deferred money is baffling.

Some people will say that McDermott achieved what he did because of Josh but don’t forget he’s the one who broke Buffalo’s 18 year playoff drought with Tyrod Taylor at the helm.
Part of this is also about Tyrod being criminally underrated by Bills fans but that's a whole other discussion. Obviously he's nowhere near Josh but he was an above average starting QB that helped lead a somewhat functional offense despite some pathetic supporting casts during those years.

I personally would have opted to keep McDermott and Brady. Fire Beane if you want, though I understand new GMs generally want to bring in their own staff too. But what's done is done.

I suspect we will hire a young offensive mind to replace McD. My main concerns about that plan are (1) likely a first time head coach with Super Bowl or bust pressure on them just doesn't feel good and (2) Think you need to find the right personality to get buy in from players that would run through a wall for McDermott, and some of the young offensive guys like McDaniel for example maybe aren't the right fit in that regard.

Point #1 makes me maybe favor Daboll over Joe Brady and Davis Webb if we're talking about the Bills/former Bills guys. At least Daboll has some experience to have learned from/had one good season as a head coach.

Another concern with McDaniel is his usual offensive style doesn't really mesh with what Josh does best. But he's smart enough to hopefully change his style to maximize Josh. Gut feeling is he just isn't the right guy for the job even though he's arguably the most qualified candidate.

Kubiak is a fine option. Some similarities in his offensive style and our current system. Has the nepotism/pedigree that folks obsess over. Think he did a pretty good job in New Orleans too.

Bummed that Stefanski is already off the board. I think he's probably the right combination of proven track record, offensive smarts, and personality for the job but alas, here we are.

It was the play of the game for me. And it’s been lost in the OT controversy and turnover talk. Get a stop there and there’s a good chance you win the game. Not only do you give it up though, you allow them to score the long touchdown a few plays later.

So do it again. The data showed Nix struggled with pressure during the season. He doesn’t take sacks but he doesn’t respond well to it. And in the biggest third down of the game, you let him off the hook? When the DL hasn’t gotten a single sack all game?

What’s the worst that happens?? You give up a touchdown?? WE DID ANYWAY!

Ridiculous decision and another example of McDermott just getting too conservative in a critical spot. Force Nix to make a quick decision.

Totally agree, too often we’ve chosen to sit in a soft zone on third and long, allowing a conversion. Denver was just the latest example. McD deserves so much credit for the last nine years but this seemed to happen repeatedly, especially in the playoffs. Change was needed.

I’m doubtful that Pegula and Beane have some higher order plan they’re following- reports are out that they’re meeting today to “build their candidate list”. That’s malpractice if true- a GM should always have a list.

I’ve felt the last few years that roster construction and personnel utilization was the issue- but perhaps a new coaching staff can build on the cultural foundation but improve the execution, especially in these types of late game scenarios. This whole plan depends on it….

They also tighten up on offense when they have a chance to close out games. Those first down runs by cook in OT when the D was stacked against it being the latest example.

Ya he gets too much credit for that imo. They ran so hot on turnovers that year. Mularkey & Marrone also won 9 games with twilight Bledsoe & Orton; they just weren't lucky enough to win an arbitrary 3way tiebreaker with a team that smashed us H2H (thanks largely to said qb getting benched for Peterman).
