Buffalo has a poll for "Which college is home to New York preeminent...

Based on the comments people are factoring Buffalo being a SUNY school and the flagship of the state. Based on athletics it's not even close. UB has never accomplished anything of note.

Its a Buffalo based business journal...Not surprising that they would get a bump...

40% of 6-700 votes is still a bit weird.

Then again I agree, I do think it's more towards being the flagship SUNY rather than NY's college team.

Not surprising at all. We've never had a hold on western NY and I don't think anyone ever thought we did.
Which is a shame because a rival of ours, Pittsburgh, has a arguably a better hold on recruiting in a large section of our own state than we do. Examples being.. Ollison, Alexander Officer and Jahmahl Pardner.

Buffalo cares about the Bills, Sabres and Yankees (majority with some Mets/Jays/Sox).

SU hoops is relevant. SU football is only cared about by alums or people with connections to SU.

Buffalo is a pro sports town. UB, Niagara, Canisus and Bonaventure fight for the scraps.

1. UB and Buffalo is like BC and Boston in terms of media coverage.

2. Odd story. The Bills had a home game where they attempted a "white out." A college marching band performed at halftime. Not the UB band; it was the Penn State band. Not sure what the driver for this event was.

I arguabley don't think so. We get more NYS guys than Pitt and the really highly recruited kids go to neither.

If Cuse expands its presence past Rochester to Buffalo and Western PA...we'll start getting a nice pipeline of 3 and low 4 star recruits.

We'd have PSU, Pitt, UB and maybe Uconn to compete with. I think within the next 3 or 4 years we'll be able to win that battle easy.

This is an incredibly scientific poll.

Trueblue25 is a UB student and pines for an SU v. UB rivalry. He won't pass up an opportunity to push for it. I am not criticizing. The kid's got spunk.

We will win the battles off the field when we win more on the field.

True. However a 6-6 season with a new coach and first year starting QB is nothing but encouraging.

Agreed. We should have a strong following from Rochester-west.It is a shame that it's never happened.

I agree...it's a start. It's the corner. Now let's turn it the hard-nosed way.

I am not sure why we "should". If I am from Rochester and go to school at Brockport, Niagara, Bonnies, Canisius, Nazareth, Fredonia, UB, or Buff St, etc... why would I want to affiliate with the private SU? Why would SU be my team? I don't know that it's a reasonable expectation.

Not surprising. SU's influence diminishes greatly west of Rochester. It also diminishes in the Southern Tier past Binghamton (NYC notwithstanding)

Football maybe. Hoops is another story. I've met a LOT of people from western NY with no ties to SU who are huge Syracuse hoops fans.

As stated in a thousand attendance threads, it's about winning. If SU football reeled off the kind of 6 year run the hoops team has been on there'd be a lot more fans in that area.

Well that'll happen when you have a top 5 Hoops program (best imo ).

The main (99%) of my argument is towards football. I think the kids coming out of WNY (Rochester, Buffalo, Niagara, Jamestown etc.) are more talented than the ones from CNY. Granted our school is in CNY so naturally we have the stronger presence there.

I think in order to achieve our dreams of conquering NYC's talent and further towards D.C. and the Chesapeake... we must first take back WNY.

The talent is there for the taking.

Funnier still: The post we put up about it on NunesMagician has turned into a pretty heated debate with UB fans. They don't agree with the "preeminent" wording (who could?), but they do believe they're in better shape than SU fans are willing to admit.

Hartwick, St. Laurence and RPI have better D1 tradition than Buffalo. Its laughable that they think they're in the same conversation as SU. They're not even Cornell.

I didn't know Buffalo had a football team until about 5 years ago. I still don't know if they have a basketball team.
