Class of 2023 C Owen Freeman (IL) Portal from Creighton

There is literally zero reason to be this vague. Just tell us what you know or don’t say anything at all.
That's too strong. Like anyone else, he is free to post as much or as little as he knows/wants to divulge.

You don't have to squint too hard to see he is implying that Freeman cannot or did not: defend, play above the rim, dunk, or rebound at anywhere near the level they expected. He also said it's not effort or injury related.

If he’s healthy i’m all for kicking the tires. One year removed from being one of the top overall players in the portal, I think he could do well here if his health checks out. Hopefully what Omaha is referring to doesn’t hinder him if we are able to scoop him.

Freeman’s career block % is 7.5. William Kyle’s is 7.7%. He’s capable of protecting the rim. Looks like he has soft hands, is a better rebounder % wise than William Kyle, and is a good passer. Very efficient overall and his defensive metrics are solid. I understand the concerns overall about health, but I’m not as concerned about the defense. Fran and McDermott were offensive first coaches.

Had some monster games against top teams when he was with Iowa. Reminds me a bit of Notre Dame bigs that used to kill us when Brey was at his best 15-20 years ago. Definitely a below the rim big, but has great footwork and uses his body well.

I don’t have a problem with the opinion, but the numbers don’t really back up why he didn’t play. It more implies a difference in the way McDermott wanted to play. Creighton was terrible this year and Freeman had some of the best offensive and defensive metrics on the team no matter where you look. You can prefer a more athletic center, but production wise this guy does it all.

Yeah, I'm on board with most of that. I was speaking specifically to the OP calling out the poster for being vague.

Okay and him being vague leads people to assume he’s abusing substances or some other non related basketball issues like someone just mentioned. All it leads to is speculation and a bad wrap for someone who might contribute to our team before he’s even signed.

Jumping to conclusions is a time honored tradition on most fan boards.

Cost Creighton its season last year. He is a good hard working kid that’s not injured.
Explain what happened then, please.

I don't know anything other than what is reported, I'm certainly no Creighton fan, much less insider.

Do tell?

Chance Westry had non injury challenges that he seemed to break free of once he left here and got to UAB.

A couple more things about all of this. First I can appreciate a staff that does their due diligence on a kid before signing off on making a deal to bring him on board. After what we went through the past 3 years with injuries, crappy effort and bad fits at least Gerry and and staff are doing everything possible to get it right. If we don’t make a deal here you move on and hopefully there’s a phone call or quick trip overseas if need be as well to get what we need.

If this kid is healthy, I would sign up for him in a second. Crieghton did. They didn't like the return because he was hurt. They can say naything they want about it later. Is he the perfect player? Nope. But he averaged 16 17 pts a game as a young guy in the big 10. I want to repeat that. He scored 16 17 pts a game in the Big 10. And he rebounded a bit to.

I have said enough, it’s going to be what it is and trust that the coaches all know the inside scoop and said risk with any player, especially a key/ expensive one. Ironically Kaleb Joseph went from SU to CU and boy they thought he was going to be player of the year:) I’m getting a lot of grief right now, karma…
I forgot Joseph went there! Wow, blast from the past. Yeah, I guess we pulled one over on them 😉.

I get what you’re saying. The only way we’re going to find out is if he suits up and gives The Orange a try. I’ll trust the coaches on this one. Thanks for the input. I’m not usually the “angry, trolling post guy” and now I feel like I need a shower. 😂

Assuming this dude doesn't have major medical issues lingering and there aren't any other extenuating circumstances, this seems like a great get.

I'd say the first part about injuries and other considerations about any player GMac and co are bringing in.

If GMac brings him in, I have to consider that good enough in terms of covering off any outside concerns to take the risk.

If he stays healthy, this would be an incredible get and really shore up a huge area of need.

Agreed. If he’s healthy and you can help him through whatever is going on outside of basketball then you’ve got to snag him.

Fair enough, I’m not saying I agree with the direction by the way and will say the Creighton coaches and staff are first class and want him to be successful and land in a good place.

Like I said, he was 100% healthy after first 1/4-1/2 of year and wish him nothing but the best, he is a good hard working kid from Iowa. My preference is to get a center who is 7’0” , can defend, plays above the rim, gets dunks and rebounds, will leave it that. I know it’s a tough market right now $ for centers.
You’re leaving out parts Omaha. He had clearly lost his starting spot in December and Creighton had started the season 5-5 with a Q3 loss. They had very little to no path to the tourney by late Jan with the big east being so bad in the non con

From what I can tell online from creighton fans. He was out of shape, hurt himself in a pickup basketball game and his parents are a little much. Fans say he checked out when he got benched and just collected his checks.

Could be more but having a whacked out parent or two or uncle is not the craziest thing we’ve seen here ha
