Cal Postgame

I'd rather have Lampkin give McCleod rest. I think we are a better team with him on the floor. Spacing is better on D and he is definitely a better rim protector.
Wow. There are a lot of insights to unpack here. Let's start with "spacing" on defense. I'm good with the rim protector part.

I watched the first minute and last minute of the game. So can someone explain to me if this was a case of SU winning or Cal losing?

I see that Cal shot 29% overall and 6 for 35 from three. That's mind numblingly awful. Did we cause much of that, or were they open looks that they simply missed?

A good majority of the shots were open it was a bold defensive strategy that paid off.

Yes

Good road win. Take our medicine on Wednesday and then try to get a couple wins after that.
After Duke, all the games are at least winnable. Not that they’re going to win them all in any way, but they can win more than a couple. BC, Miami, Virginia, Va Tech, NC State, even UNC and Pitt are winnable. We’ll see how many we can get. Maybe 4 or 5? Either way, it’s been a disappointing season so far.

Can’t you just be happy with a win?

I believe that McLeod can score inside as well if not better than Dry Hump
Please please recognize the competition. The Cal Center is not good and doesn't play on offense. Took 1 shot in 30 mins yesterday. I'm not saying Eddie some physical specimen either but McLeod is gassed after a few trips down the court.

I rewatched and didn't think so. Sure some but not as many as usual. Not like any of have watched Cal play this year but what I picked up is that they are pretty crap shooting team. They took alot of bad shots and then didn't get back like us.

When Carlos runs the court on a long rebound and gets an and 1 thats when I was like ok I'm watching the West coast version of our Cuse team this year.

I watched the game again. Focus on the O and D possessions when McLeod is on the court
And when Lampkin is on the court. There is 100% no doubt or O ran significantly better. Not close

Jaquan carlos is our only good player

I’ll take the win but wow Cal stunk. I mean terrible. Lack of reps holding a lead really showed last night. Need to run JJ toward the inbounding baseline and Carlos parallel to get him away from the corner.

It’s easy to blame the coaches, and that may be the issue, but our players choked on a couple possessions.

With whom did the O run better?

Carlos is a 22 year old SR PG.

The way he ran down the corner to get doubled like that…repeatedly….oh and he’s 5 foot nothing…was mind boggling.

Really showed that his skill allowed him to play that mid major level (dribbling through presses or beating traps with shorter players) but he really just doesn’t translate at all up a level. Cant make this mistake in the portal again

Yes the majority of the NIL budget needs to go to a veteran leader PG and we are going to have to overpay to get him to come to Syracuse. Then get a defensive rim-running center who can set screens and block shots. Not the other way around hopefully Red has learn his lesson this offseason and changed his mind on those early million dollar center reports

I agree that Carlos should know better than to run into that corner vs an odd front zone press.

Equally, if not more mind boggling is the press break alignment we consistently used last night (the same one JB used near the end of his run). Space is your friend vs. a 1-2-1-1 full court press. They know with certainty that the man defending the inbound pass will turn and chase the first pass to hard set the initial trap. We run the same press with the same concepts. Our guards repeatedly set up below the foul line (instead of moving back to create more space before the ball is even inbounded) with Carlos half running to the short corner nearest the inbound defender while JJ just kind of drifted. It is literally a textbook example of "how not to break a press."

Was Lampkin in during the last two minutes?

I would have played Carlos, JJ, Taylor, Davis, and Petar. More mobility, speed, and ball handling.
