Calhoun

I guess I can't get over the pure vitriol here. You don't have to like Calhoun, but shouldn't there be a line drawn somewhere that stops you from furthering your hate when someone is having health issues?

I hate UConn and I think Calhoun is dirty, but I can't fathom attacking him for conspiracy theory motives here. He's been in and out of poor health for years. Shouldn't it stand to reason it would eventually catch up with him, without there being anything else behind it?

So his back hurts and his team sucks so he is calling it quits on this group?
Or am I just being an insensative douche?

If you are then so am I.

I was thinking cancer or something. In which case I would be completely sympathetic.

Back pain though? I mean sure that's gotta be tough but as someone else said - if HIS team was 22-1 would he still be taking a sabbatical?

Last year I destroyed a disk in my back. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. Good luck to Calhoun.

He has sat out plenty of games for health reasons with good and bad teams, but that's a fair question. If UConn was 22-1, who knows? I think he would probably try a few more games to stay out there with the team, though he may have already reached that point. I think if it's bad enough for him to call it quits for the season, he would have eventually succumbed to it even if he was 22-1. I would point to the 2009-2010 season as a similar set of circumstances. UConn was 11-6 (worse than currently) and he came back when he was 14-10. That was only two years ago and in a much more stressful environment (not following a NC season, with NCAA sanctions still unknown).

23-0 maybe a different story (you're talking legit undefeated season potential at that point).

But that's just my opinion.

Yea I hear ya but after lastyears run he should have probably walked away. Tough to get back to the top and there would have been no shame in walking away. Now it would almost feel like he was coaching just to get to the 900 wins (ala Eddie sutton who had to find a team without a coach to get the last few wins...awful.) I'm not comparing Suttons situation to Calhouns but he has nothing left to prove.
Calhoun is a fighter, and he wasn't going to walk away from his program while the NCAA was sanctioning it. He was going to fight them on the sanctions and find ways around them and figure out how to win anyway. Well, two out of three ain't bad.

I for one wish him well. Unlike most on this forum I have a real admiration for Calhoun. I think he is the best NCAA tournament coach of the modern (64 team era). Yes, better than K. I believe that if he hadn't spent the first decade of his career building a program from scratch at a nothing little urban university, he would probably be well ahead of JB and challenging K for the all time lead.

On top of all that, I find his personal story compelling - you should look it up sometime. I understand that his personality is hard scrabble and tough to like, but I find both his life story and especially his coaching to be very admirable. I hope he is able to recover and finish out his career on his own terms.

There's a lot of stupid in this thread. Back pain can be incredibly debilitating. Notwithstanding the fact that it can lead to headaches being in constant pain can also lead to an inability to concentrate. The side effects of pain medications and muscle relaxers generally wouldn't allow you to perform properly at McDonald's. I can't imagine what limits they put on his ability to coach. And that's not even considering the potential combined side effects of his other meds with the pain med.

He hasn't looked "right" on his bench at all. Where normally he'd be flipping to *** over his team's play, he's just kind of sat there. Calhoun is a good man to hate, and quitting on his team is not Jim Calhoun.

I hope he is ok, but I hope this helps in our recruiting of Noels even more. Hopefully he realizes that Calhoun being able to coach is not a guarantee and that would hopefully be able to push the Huskies further out of the recruitment battle.

Classy post ... I would echo the same sentiments towards Jimmy B if in a similar situation.

There's back pain and then there's back pain. Some who are lucky enough to have never had a back problem probably can't relate.

I'm 6 ft tall..when I was in my late 30's and weighing around 165 (I was in good shape) I bent the wrong way and ended up spending a month on my couch. I could hardly move.

Not all back problems/pain are debilitating, but there are times when it's pure hell to try and function when your back is really acting up, not just physically, but mentally.

I'll cut Calhoun some slack.

I give you props for taking the thread in a direction I never would have even considered.

Calhoun's health has been an issue for several years. I'm still on the camp that says he's gone after this year, regardless of the result. He has no control of this team and will most likely be losing his best 2 players while only adding 1 recruit next year (he is a top 50 player though).

All I know is I am starting to be a little superstitious lately. PSU happened and we ripped them, fast forward a few weeks and BF comes out. Boatright is suspended, we make fun of them and then Fab Melo misses 3 games. Im not going anywhere near this.

In other news, George Blaney is looking to set the record for games coached as a fill-in head coach. Gotta tip you cap to him.

Me too, last January L4/L5 (I think very bottom one) I couldn't do much of aything for about 3 days and then once I got moving around the shooting pains down my left leg were pretty debilitating at times. I had to put off surgery because my wife was due to have a baby in the next couple months and she has c-sections every time which means no driving or lifting for her for 9weeks. You get used to the pain and firgure out what ways not to move but its still constant and exhausting. Never been more tired in my whole life at the end of the day for months and months. I did finally get surgery Nov 10 and am currantly finishing up physical theropy. I feel great and can't wait to get a full release. I haven't swung a golf club in well over a year.
Anything putting presure on your spinal cord is no joke.

A spine is nothing to screw around with. That's too bad.

Back is no joke. Ive had a bulging disc for many years now and when it becomes aggrivated Im an invalid for a week. You learn to adjust your life in ways youd never think of to avoid it happening.

If youve never had a back issue there is no way youll ever understand. Leave it at that.

I hope his back gets better and he makes a recovery. Other than that .. Calgoon

Thats tough, never how you want to beat your opponent. Best of luck you ole' SOB (and yes I think he is a SOB). Hope you recover well (but I really do hope he recovers and is able to live a pain free life as is possible).

Thankfully my back is tip top... my knee, however, are 20 years my senior. Effin hockey.

This ^
I had muscle issues which are bothersome plenty of times over the years, but would go to the ciropractor and within 3-4 days feel fine. My blown up disk was a completely different thing. If you ahven't experianced a back issue related to something sticking into your spinal cord hope you never do it can be pretty brutal.

sounds like a lot of you dudes need to strengthen your core's.

LOL, that is 90% of what my physical theropy has been. The other 10 is getting that nerve to slide freely again after a year of it being pinched in one place. I think I will do core exersicing and proper stretching for the rest of my life after this. I'll also always be very carefull about how I lift.

absolutely. I have had many a conversations with PT's and Excercise Physiologists about the importance of a strong core. It can't cure a bad back but it can certainly help one. Keep it up bro!
