How do schools calculate the cost of a scholarship?
Is it (basically) tuition lost per player per year?
In other words, is the extra 20 scholarships (from 85 to 105) viewed by the school as $63K * 20 = $1,260,000 in lost income?

I don't think it's lost income. I believe the AD pays the school.

Doesn't the AD get their money from the school?

I took an accounting class in college. It was a disaster.
Depends on the school. Athletic departments typically self-fund to the extent they can, and smaller schools usually prop up their athletic departments with "student fees."

I really am not sure, I just vaguely remember this came up during the whole "can JB not use a scholarship on Buddy" thing. I'm pretty sure the University can't just write off athletic scholarships. They do get paid for them. It's not a zero transaction, it is a hard cost. Think it also has to do with Title IX stuff.

Yeah, this. When you donate to cuse you can donate to the University or the Athletics Fund. It's two separate sets of books that have a lot of back and forth.

And of course, ticket sales, which brings up a relevant point. The difference between "Revenue sports" and "Olympic sports" is that one usually adds to that fund and the other draws from it. However, I recall JW saying that football is currently running a deficit. They are aware there's a boat about to leave port and they want to make sure they're on it.

Also important is the difference between an athletic scholarship from the athletics fund (conditional on participation) and a scholarship from the school's financial aid department.

Would not at all surprise me if Buddy already had a full ride just for being Jim's son; there's real clout for the uni there even if he's not on the team. And last I knew all children of SU employees received aid as a perk of their parent's service.

I believe the total cost of attendance at SU is closer to $90K/yr., which includes housing, food, books, misc. expenses, etc.

Yeah, we've talked about this a few times over the years. Questions like "why does the AD have to pay the school for scholarships - can't the school just add a few desks in some classes for the football players to sit in?"

The AD budget has expenses we might not normally think of. We have to pay a decent amount (if I recall) for use of the Dome. The AD pays the expenses for Dome security, e.g. And I don't think the AD gets any of the concession money (check me on this, if you know!).

Would the 85-scholarship limit still be in place with an overall roster cap at 105? Also, can NIL money cover costs of tuition of players not on scholarship?
There is no scholarship limit, only a roster limit of 105. With a big signing class coming in, plus at least some portal activity I expect many of our current walkons will not be part of the program net year. Certainly guys like Josh Kubala and Clay Masters who have been special team standouts will land a spot, and possibly a scholarship, but others will find their football careers at a P4 level to be over. Expect to see a lot of names from this group in the portal and transfering to a lower level

Boeheim will be Boeheimed?

Can confirm like 98% remitted tuition for dependents, participation in the Tuition Exchange Program, and like 98% remitted tuition for spouses is among the current benefits of SU employees.

From what I've read, the effect of Title IX on the rules coming out of the House v. NCAA case settlement is unresolved and totally up in the air. No one knows and it may ultimately have to be litigated. Unless Congress passes legislation with implementing rules. I've wondered if Title IX is why the House case settlement calls paying players "revenue sharing". If women sports don't earn revenue there's nothing to share.
