...of our tourney losses the last couple years (minus the 35-12 lead). Tough, in your shirt, man to man half court defense taking us out of our offense and forcing turnovers (18 in the Butler and Marq tourney losses, 15 today mostly in the 2nd half). We just need to be stronger with the ball and with our passes against that type of D and match the physicality. Waaay too many soft passes into traffic.

Ahhh that felt good I've had so few chances to bitch this year...

You left out Higgins and Cahill refereeing. Perfect storm against a team like Marquette. Ruins the flow, kills us in foul trouble, and only goes one way. Marquette and Butler loved those moving screens.

Problems today:
Kjo with only 3 rebs
Scoop reverted back to last year's Scoop where his bad shots are basically turnovers
Baye being hurt is killing us. JB went with Xmas to spell Fab after foul #3 and he got ATE UP. We lost most of the lead in those few minutes with them attacking the kid like sharks on chum.

Thank god for dion and triche's new found aggressiveness. They are the only one's that can handle the pressure.

Carbon copy except we are figuring out how to win that kind of game this year. Last year we lose this game.

We need to learn to play through the refs - I felt like Butler turned the tourney game a couple years ago into a total scrum and dared the refs to call everything, which they didn't.

Amen.

It's not really about the refs anyway.

You just described every game Butler has played for the last several years.

Need Fab to stay in games; need Triche to avoid the good half/weak half syndrome.
Really impressed with BT in the first half -- did he just wear down?

Really happy we pulled out what was a close game toward the end. Can't complain too much with a win but want to commend Marquette for playing tough in the second half. They played with intensity.

I watched a Butler game recently where one of their players was called for a foul. The tv cameras honed in on Butler coach Stevens explaining to the ref about what happened and how it wasn't a foul and you could clearly see the ref say to him that "It is a Foul!". Stevens stopped explaining and his face appeared to show that his defenses had been figured out by the refs.

Absolutely. We needed a game like this too, they punched us in the mouth in the 2nd half and out-physicalled us. We responded though.

They scared me that they had to respond so close to the end of the game. A possession or two could have made a big difference in the outcome. Dion's block and layup was a big play and indicative of what he brings. Good game overall, but too sloppy with the ball at times. I love these guys but they make it too exciting. I kinda like blowouts.

I didn't see a lot of bad calls , there were way more in the Providence game. The refs were worth 15 pts for Providence. The bad calls today somewhat evened up. I'm recalling Crowder blocking Fair under the basket, then a couple minutes later Fab hipchecked Crowder with a resulting no-call. The other big guy getting in foul trouble rendered him useless. We had no answer for him when he cut loose.

There were bad calls each way today (I'm thinking of Joseph's dunk and the foul, which was a tremendous continuation play, and a clear over-the-back that went uncalled on Fab), but the beginning of each half was ridiculous - touch fouls on Syracuse and handchecking allowed for Marquette. A Syracuse player gets hacked on a shot attempt without a whistle, but Fab immediately gets called for his second as he reaches in for the rebound. It didn't look even today; Marquette fouls on every possession, Butler-style, and dares the refs to call them all.

We do have to play through it, though. Fab in particular needs to stop waiting for whistles and just go up strong and dunk the ball - too many wimpy missed lay-ups while anticipating a foul call.
