Carrier Dome

I don't think you can build a basketball only facility that will seat 35k.

There's a limit to how many people you can cram around a basketball court.

Rupp holds 23,500, Yum is 22,090.

The biggest NBA arenas are all around 21,000.

There's a reason why all the crowds over 25,000 are in football stadiums.

I would build a multilevel landscaped with waterfalls flowing banners on all kinds of other architectural bells and whistles on the west end of the doom that that could be clearly seen from 81 and let a corporate entity name something like Pepsi Tailgate Patio at the Carrier Dome.

The corporate name has to be visible from 81.

what would bball ticket sales be if the last 10K seats were as almost good as the first 20K ? we dont need 35K only a few times, would a 27-28K sold out all the time be better? only 1 game a year you have to worry if you want to get in. if we had a 28K place with all good or decent seats it would force more to buy season. even 30K might force more decisions

Yeah ok 35 is to high but min 25 then - or maybe base it on the best seasonal average or mean they've ever had and go from there. If every seat in the house was a good seat that might make those numbers doable more often than not. I don't know where the cut off is but lets face it, after say 23-25k the seats suck @ss.

No matter what a good team and quality opponent will effect attendance, but ill also always maintain that convenience (parking) will pull in a lot more that otherwise wouldn't go.

You'd also have a premiere indoor stadium for concerts right smack dab in the center of the state. This could bring in a lot of extra dough anytime of the year.

The thought of playing on South Campus just depresses the hell out of me. I love being on the SU campus, especially for football games in the fall. I hope we play in the Dome for another 50 years - making improvements, as necessary. The Dome is the most iconic thing about the city of Syracuse, by far. I just have no interest in playing in some soulless pro-arena with a stupid corporate name (i.e. KFC Yum).

Agree. Spend the money to enhance it. That's what everyone else does.

Check built dates on all the other sh!thole stadiums that are college legacy type places...

OSU
MU
UCLA
USC.

Why are we doing this. again?

A retractable Dome would address the AC issue, otherwise, that has to be addressed. The early games are rediculous and you see halh the stadium outside trying to breath. Either way, this should be addressed if you want a full stadium. Also would help to play the USC's and PSU's of the world in Syrcause as well, not to mention that Irish Ball Club next year.
The early games are ridiculous heat-wise all across the south. I went to grad school at the University of Texas and the first 3 or 4 games the heat is incredible - even for night games. Just something you have to deal with for early season football. After 8 months without football it usually doesn't seem so bad ;)

For those wanting individual seats, there is a negative, at least for football. When 3 people show up in a group of 4 seats, you don't know it in bleacher seats, you do in individual seating.

I would install orange lights that only face upward. That way, at night the Dome would glow orange.
And if I was replacing the bench seating with comfortable seating, I would only do it between the 20s, and make that a perk for the premium seat buyers.

I'd also keep the Dome and spend the money to keep improving it. We'll never need more seats because of all the various reasons that I won't list.

If they ever decided to build a new stadium they'd have to keep it on campus. Moving it to say the fairgrounds would be horrible - more convenient for the attendee but still horrible, off campus stadiums blow for a million reasons. That would be a terrible decision.

The various, relatively cheap, aesthetic enhancements that folks are mentioning seem doable, and SU has been sprucing the place up slowly but surely over the past few years.

To me, the big question is to determine what SU has in mind long-term. Do they want to reclaim the land the Dome occupies for academic buildings? If so, do they want to ultimately build a new facility on South Campus? Would it be another domed stadium for multi-purpose use, or separate football and basketball facilities?

IMHO if SU has plans for replacement on the mid-to-long term horizon it doesn't make a lick of sense to put any more money into the Dome than necessary. It's an entirely serviceable facility, and as hoops attendance suggests, it's condition and amenities do't keep any significant number of people from attending as long as the teams playing in it are successful.

I said the exact same thing in the other exact same thread.

The land it is on is more valuable to the university as academic buildings than athletics.

Parking area for tailgating.

you can build the academic bldgs of central campus if you want.. many colleges have areas like that

totally agree. are we talking 5-10 years out, or 15-20? do little things like painting over the aluminum. just by doing that it will make it look a whole lot better during gamedays without costing much at all. maybe add a couple local restaurants like a Dino stand or something.

So given the very limited funds, one of your priorities would be waterfalls?

Who says there are "very limited funds" that is a "given"? If you present the right proposals to the right corporate entities, funds may be virtually UNlimited.

Or... win the mega millions lotto. That's possible too. My bad. You are right. The funding is unlimited. Retractable dome, here we come!

waterfalls??

This is just me spit balling here but how about we offer Carrier a chance to do the work in order to keep their name on the building else we take it to someone like Trane to do the work. I bet a Carrier competitor would be willing to do that to increase their standing in the Syracuse market. Then it costs no money and we get the Trane Dome. :D

Also if they want to add some new academic buildings there are some nice brick houses near the corner of S. Townsend and E. Adams. Real safe area and quick access to 81. ;)

What work? Btw... Carrier gave SU a gift and SU agreed to name the building after Carrier as a result of the gift. It's not like the name is up for bid or change. The name is in perpetuity unless Carrier agrees otherwise.

The work I am referring to is retrofitting the dome with some HVAC. Also I am pretty sure names can change on facilities especially after 30 plus years.

It took 2 years for the New Meadowlands Stadium to get a corporate sponsor. In the NYC market.

I don't think corporations are lining up to throw big money at CNY.

I'm not sure that people understand that just because you want corporate dollars that they just magically flow.
