Carrier Dome

It took 2 years for the New Meadowlands Stadium to get a corporate sponsor. In the NYC market.

I don't think corporations are lining up to throw big money at CNY.

I'm not sure that people understand that just because you want corporate dollars that they just magically flow.

Should just get sponsored by the United States Government. They have endless supplies of money and Syracuse has a plagiarist fairly high up in there...

This is just me spit balling here but how about we offer Carrier a chance to do the work in order to keep their name on the building else we take it to someone like Trane to do the work. I bet a Carrier competitor would be willing to do that to increase their standing in the Syracuse market. Then it costs no money and we get the Trane Dome. :D

Choo! Choo!

How about we build a new educational facility for the sports management program, and attach it to the West end of the Dome. Blast out the west facade (maintaining the necessary air lock, obviously), and create a state of the art Sports management education facility that literally looks out over the field.

The early games are ridiculous heat-wise all across the south. I went to grad school at the University of Texas and the first 3 or 4 games the heat is incredible - even for night games. Just something you have to deal with for early season football. After 8 months without football it usually doesn't seem so bad ;)
Exactly... The first six weeks at ASU games are brutal ... Kickoff even with 7pm kickoffs are still in high 90's sometimes 100,s

AC in the Dome is just not necessary. And BTW, the hottest I have ever been at an SU game was outdoors... in October... in Boston. A game in Tampa comes in second. We have no complaints here.

Isn't the current college of law complex going to be gutted to house the Falk College? That will pretty much abut the Dome.

Falk Falk College. This could be the Falk-in' Dome!

If an AC retrofit was feasible (with current technology) it would already have been done. The new stadium will have a proper HVAC system for all seasons.

I never implied otherwise. I talked about the right proposals to the right entities. You cited one example that had temporary issues. Do I need to cite hundreds of successful examples?

Just a few sports related ones in CNY would do. Why don't you start with the IPF naming gift? :)

It's totally feasible. It's just a high priority given the expense of installing and running it.

How about just cite a couple of recent (within the last 15 years) examples where a naming sponsor paid nearly enough to cover the expense of a stadium. Even 50%.

Last time it was looked at it was not considered to be economically feasible. Maybe at the next roof renewal time things will be different. If it's to be the last roof replacement then it still may not make sense.

I am not sure what A/C has to do with the replacement of the teflon roof. A/C would cost a lot to add (because of the dome's large size) and running it would be a large expense... both considered not worth it given the limited usage in the summer months. However, there is nothing unique about the dome that makes in not "economically feasible". It's a priority thing.

The preferred formula is one where the owners fund the majority if not the entirety of the stadium costs, one way or another (traditional borrowing, PSL's, personal wealth, etc). Owners should want to keep Govco out of it, like any other private or corporate investment. Corporate naming opportunities can add nominal amounts to the coffers, but unless somehow the company is the owner (tough sell to the board and the stockholders to diversify your bank or widget manufacturer into owning a ballclub), they generally aren't going to want to pay large percentages of the construction costs. Too expensive, and you don't get the return.

You said the corporate money could be "unlimited". Given the state of the CNY economy and population trend, that seems...let's just say, "unlikely".

The work I am referring to is retrofitting the dome with some HVAC. Also I am pretty sure names can change on facilities especially after 30 plus years.
You are wrong the Carrier Dome name cannot be changed as per the original gift agreement, newer stadiums were smart enough to put a time limit on their naming rights.
For your information Carrier was willing to donate the AC equipment for the dome when built SU administration said no due to ongoing anticipated maintenance costs.

I agree that taxes, regulation, and unions have driven former corporate jewels like IBM, Kodak, Xerox, and GE out of Upstate New York. As a result it would be difficult to envision the Plainville Farms Dome, or the Attica State Prison Syracuse Orange Basketball Arena.

But who says the corporate money has to necessarily be local? I could envision the Dome roof with a giant Apple insignia on it. It would make for an awesome aerial shot at night.

It's the Carrier Dome in perpetuity. Perhaps they could be bought out. But it would probably cost more than the $5 million they donated in the first place. They got a bargain.

The land it is on is more valuable to the university as academic buildings than athletics.

I'd like to see the number crunching on this one.

I think they should build a retractable roof and they certainly could. The movable part of JerryWorld is not held up by the concrete, it is held up by the giant curved steel structure. Same with reliant Stadium, supported by Steel structures. Why not blow out the West end of the dome and build new locker rooms, add some nice SU shops a couple restaurants that are open all the time for students and the public. To generate revenue beyond gamedays and lure the public in. Build a steel structure over the top of the current concrete sarcophagus that will support the weight of a movable roof, an exoskeleton if you will. Would this be as expensive as constructing a new dome, no. Would it probably run around 35-40 million, probably. Building anything in Syracuse is not as expensive as building in other places, keep that in mind.

But not 100-150 million to replace it on South Campus.

Please make more political statements, it's really adding to the discourse in this thread.
