Central Michigan Week...

Seemed like Matt was more interested in getting Shaf to talk about LSU than CMU.

Syracuse coach Scott Shafer is set to kick off his weekly teleconference. Updates to come.

Shafer on CMU QB Cooper Rush: "What a great football player. All of his numbers are just extraordinary."

Shafer said CMU's defense is sound and has a strong front with many returning starters.

Shafer said he was disappointed SU didn't get a penalty call on a rub route. Believe this was when Winfield missed the tackle.

Shafer on CB Corey Winfield: "He's really taken to learning how to play the position."

Shafer said Corey Winfield's vertical is around 40 or 41 inches. That's not new. Just reiterating how impressive that is.

Interesting that Shafer wanted more pressure from a four-man rush. 13/14 of Wolford's big gains were out before four seconds.

Shafer notes Dontae Strickland (KR) and Rodney Williams (PR) as having experience returning in HS. Both are filling in for Philips as 2s.

Shafer on the hybrid position: "I don't feel like there's a huge dropoff." He does note Philips as one of the most dynamic guys on offense.

Shafer: "Erv (Philips) had a very minor procedure. He'll be back in two or three weeks ready to roll."

Shafer called conjecture about injuries "laughable" Surprised by ? as it was asked after Wake.

Looking at the calendar, it appears the USF game (10/10) is a likely return date for Philips. The bye week helps there.

SS on SU's run D: "It was a shame on Saturday. I think we could have totally annihilated them in the run game if not for a couple misfits."

Shafer on Dungey: Saw him develop fast in the summer. Put him in with the twos to get him more reps

Shafer: When Dungey was the starter, eased him into the game plan and want to give him more each week

Shafer calls CMU QB Cooper Rush a tremendous football player. Bright young man.

Shafer said CMU's defense plays hard and sound

Shafer says youth at CMU linebacker is similar to youth at Syracuse

Shafer says Syracuse will have to have a good plan against the CMU defense

Shafer on the secondary: have to get pressure on the QB. Lack of pressure allows double moves to develop

Shafer said two of their big plays were caught behind the line of scrimmage and they have to do a better job at leveraging the ball

Shafer says Corey Winfield is learning how to play CB. Taking that next step in his development and playing his speed and tempo

Shafer says Winfield has made some real athletic plays. When they first moved him to CB, his technique was horrible. Much improved now

Shafer believes his younger defensive backs have a lot of potential. Have to keep working

Shafer Dontae Strickland and Brisly Estime have caught the ball well and showed dynamic return ability

Shafer likes what both Ben Lewis and Dontae Strickland bring to the h-back position. Believes there isn't a huge drop off from Erv

Shafer says Erv is one of the most dynamic players they have, but believes the guys behind him can be productive

Shafer says Dungey made some reads and checks that were "pretty high level."

Shafer believes his running back group is solid. Says there is a learning curve for Jordan Fredericks, but he has a high football IQ

Shafer says CMU QB Cooper Rush is more mobile than he gets credit for. Can make throws moving right or left

Shafer says the Syracuse defense will have to be disciplined against Cooper Rush, who he raves about as a QB

Shafer on only giving up 50 total rushing yards through 2 games: "We pride ourselves on playing good run defense."

Shafer said Syracuse was close to completely dominating Wake Forest against the run. Just missed a couple small things.

Shafer says the team walk through the quad is to let the team look at the campus and gain perspective on what they're playing for

Shafer says the team reflects on what Ernie Davis meant to the team, they walk by his statue and tap the shoe before each game

Who were the misfits?
