CFP Rankings for Dec 3

Are we missing a bigger question here?

If UNLV wins, does Boise drop behind Bama?

Or UNLV and Clemson both win? Are both SMU and Boise out?

Also another interesting question if the higher seeds all win the CCGs, with ASU blowing out ISU, does ASU jump Bama? A conference champ would in the 4 team playoffs. 11-2 B1G Champ get the 11 seed and 9-3 4th SEC the 12?
If UNLV wins, they will be in and Boise is out. Even though they are seeded 4 (dumb by the way), they are ranked #10. UNLV will just replace them.

The goal is always to win. I never understood the “close” wins argument. They’re still wins. Good teams find ways to win, especially in close games.

* not saying you are arguing against that btw
I agree with this on a moral level.

Winning should NEVER count against a team.

But why should Bama jump Boise? Same reasoning as SMU getting jumped. They were beating Oregon by 7 with 10 mins left on the road until a KR TD tied it up and changed the game.

They should just forfeit the game then. Why would they be penalized for going undefeated in conference and not make it due to a loss in a championship game. Bama just lost by 3 TDs to a 6-6 team 2 weeks ago. And Bama has 3 losses.
Punishing a team for a loss in their conference championship game rewards teams that didn't perform well enough to make their conference championship.

It's backwards thinking.

I just dont see the MWC getting two teams in. I see it more as UNLV taking Boise's place. Bama would remain where they are, imho

I think that is what will happen but there has been no talk of it. Boise is in the same situation as SMU. Win they get a 3 or 4 seed. Forfeit and they get the 11 seed. Lose and they are likely out.

I don't get the don't punish a team for playing thing. With the wonky schedules teams can get into the Conf game with vastly different schedules.

I mean PSU played one team with a pulse all year. They avoided the bad loss for sure but also had few games against teams with any kind of offense.

IMO it depends on performance. If Oregon wins easily can you really justify Penn State being ahead of Ohio State? These conference schedules are not round robin so you cannot just go off of record.

So in this case both teams lost to Oregon but Ohio State would have been closer and beat Penn State head to head. Eye test is on Ohio State's side too.

PSU gets the shot to stay ahead of OSU. But if they lose they have to go behind them since then they would have lost to OSU and Oregon. if its a close game perhaps they stay ahead with the 1 less loss but they didnt play Ore or OSU or Iowa or Mich or Rutgers and no teams OC either. Where as OSU played Ore/Indiana/OSU/Iowa/Mich

My thoughts on the comittee and miami in particular. You play who is on the schedule. A lot of teams sign these deals to play each other years in advance. A team can really not control how good or how bad the teams will be on their schedule in a given year.

Miami, played AT Florida, smoked them. Is it their fault Florida stunk this year? And by the way...UF is 7-5 and beat Ol Miss (another potential CFP team). Miami didnt play Clemson, and smoked a down Florida State team, an FSU team that lost only 1 game last year, that everyone thought would be really good. Is that Miami's fault?

Miami lost to a Ga Tech team, that beat FSU, went 8OT with GA...was ranked at some point
And lost to Syracuse, that if you ask us SU fans, was probably a 20-25 rank team all season, but got no love...why? Becuase preseason narratives about who is good and who isn't continue to matter even leading up to Championship week.

The cause of a lot of this nonsense is preseason rankings. Those need to stop.
Making a case for Miami is very challenging imo. They don't have one victory over a ranked team and if not for the ACC Command Center screwing VaTech would have three losses instead of two. Their defense was hideous.

If SMU loses and the committee is trying to decide them or Bama, could a tie breaker be who they would play? If it is Texas would they say no one wants to see SEC vs SEC plus SMU vs Texas is an old rivalry. But if it is Notre Dame they may say Bama vs ND is a no brainer. When it will be so close, any little angle can be a factor.

Was it hideous though?

top 25 in yds.
top 60 in pts.
One of the top in QB pressure and sacks.

Its a strange mix.

Teams didn't move the ball but they allowed big plays.

If you had Miami against the field there is not one team you would say they couldn't beat because of the offense.

Who else do you say that about?

Tenn had issues vs OK/Ark/FL/ala/Kent/Ga
Tex had issues vs Ga/Vandy/ark/TAM
Ala had issues vs USC/Tenn/OK
PSU has issues vs UCLA/ILL/OSU
Indiana really had just the one bad game but it was really bad and played no one else to tell
Ore had issues vs Idaho and Wisc. strange
OSU had issues vs Neb/PSU/Mich
B12 who knows.
Miami had the GT game but then so didn't GA, and they only escape because they got breaks at the end.

No idea how to read GA. They had great halves against teams though

They allowed 30+ 5 times.
GA allowed 3 times
Tex once
Tenn once
Ala once

Makes me wonder if the SEC offenses are really the issue and inconsistent as well.

The ACC was not a particularly strong league this year yet Miami gave up 30 points per game in ACC play. That's hideous. They didn't have to play SMU or Clemson and their non-conference was nothing special. Teams that score with big plays are moving the ball.

I wish the U were able to play in the CFP. I would enjoy betting against them. Most of the teams you mentioned would handle the Canes with ease because they have strength on both sides of the ball. You're also not factoring in the Cristobal factor. To be kind, not a good coach.
