Class of 2026 CG Ryan Moesch (NY) Offered

Nate George will be here. Donnie Freeman will not.
Kinda GIF

I can assure you that he is committed - not really happy hearing that George is coming back - I was hoping we could get a stronger and faster portal PG
I think George is ok, but with the money we've got, we need to get a TOP rated center AND pg. Hopefully the targets are on point

So I think 247 had him at 141 in the rankings. I went back and looked, Fennel was at 134.
Id spend my money on an impact pg in the portal, would they keep 3 pgs on roster?

I think Fennell is more of a 1-3 type player. Based on his performance last year, I wouldn't want him being our only ball handler ever. I haven't watched as much film of Moesch, but my impression is he is much more of a scorer than a PG. I would go so far as to say he is listed as a combo guard only because he is PG size and not based on his game.

Every player can pass, even being a good passer doesn't make you a point guard.

If we get a portal PG and have Fennell and Moesch competing for backup minutes at PG and SG, we could live with that, but it could be excruciating if they are our only PG.

Having 3 PG, especially if two of them are combos, certainly isn't too many. I would suggest we want another, one to compete with the two guys mentioned for backup PG minutes.

I think the guy who should be spending the summer working on PG skills along with defense is Kiyan. He has the ability to control the pace and avoid being sped up just needs to get stronger and be more unselfish. I still think he could be a bit of a combination of Kris Joseph and Mike Gbinije in terms of his game if he applied himself and committed to improving certain areas. That’s not at all saying he should even be a backup PG but more so a ball handler that can make plays with his array of skills as a driver and his ability to not be rattled and sped up. To me this would help with having to put so much pressure on one specific ball handler which has been such a recipe of success over the years for us Offensively.

It’s also a skillset I though Freeman could build on as he showed a willingness to grab a board and push the ball up himself but his decision making was putrid most of the year as the season dragged on so I’m not certain he could ever really be on the ball more here outside of against weak competition

Gbinije's game would be a good model for Kiyan.

Other than the first few games, against lesser comp, I was wholly unimpressed with Kiyan. He was a black hole on offense, and a no show on defense. White might be a superior athlete, but he is an inferior basketball player.
Maybe coaching and cultural can turn things around.

If I had a player to take based on last year, I would take Sadiq White over George, Anthony and Freeman. He demonstrated an infectious presence on Defense and has potential on Offense. He does need to improve his inside offensive game and also control his immaturity towards referees. This past season, his demonstrative, repetitive immaturity regarding fouls called on him made him a target for the referees.

Re: Moesch, it's funnily enough from a Providence blog and the full report is buried behind a paywall but:

For all the scoring he’s done in his career, what makes Moesch so intriguing are his passing ability and feel. He’s creative off the bounce and outstanding in pick and rolls, and did nothing but help his stock this spring/summer playing for a terrific Middlesex Magic team on the Under Armour circuit.

Re: Moesch, it's funnily enough from a Providence blog and the full report is buried behind a paywall but:

How many times have we seen a freshman that outperforms ranking because a coach with a good eye saw something others didn’t? This is the perfect kind of no expectations gamble to bring over behind a portal haul. If he can’t hack it no one remembers.

Guard size can be a factor, maybe a significant one, but if this kid can come close to a Braden Smith level of player we'd be more than happy. I'd rate quickness and ball handling skills at the point guard position as the most important factors. If he can see the court and make the correct reads we'd have a very high level player at a very significant position.

I will cede to a more informed authority. Nobody would write an article about a kid without watching a ton of video, would they?

In all seriousness, I refuse to spend hours watching video until a kid commits, so I haven't watched much of his play. If he's an elite passer, then that would be a huge upgrade for my expectations of his future success. It is much easier to be a sub 6' PG than scoring guard.

Yeah lol I think that's very fair. I generally agree but went ahead and watched the one game of him since it seems extremely likely he's committing here. I wouldn't say I've seen enough to say he's an elite passer but he is definitely extremely comfortable working off of ball screens and probing the paint without overcommitting. And I would definitely categorize him as a PG vs. undersized SG.

I loved white. He was the one who helped us almost beat Houston. Then started doing baby hooks down low. A year of muscle and footwork with Ao will fix that. Tough tough kid who plays hard as hell.

I suspect Gerry will appreciate how hard he plays. Suspect he will help Sadiq use it more appropriately.

I want to retain Sadiq more than anyone else currently on the roster.

I highly agree

And I 144% disagree.

Silent G was a plus athlete and good defender,
who then added guard skills and became our PG out of necessity.

Kiyan is, at best average athletically.
(Prolly below avg for a P4 wing).
Turrible defender.

So - he will have to work very hard on his athleticism and D,
just to get to that starting baseline.

Yeah I see he isn’t quite as athletic. That can be improved

yes can be improved but still won't be able to get to silent g's athleticism. G was explosive athlete. Kiyan's lack of quickness limits his ability to stay in front of people on defense. He'll be a good offensive player, but unfortunately a below average defender. Kiyan would have been a better fit in JB's zone, where his height would allow him to play up top but not get exposed in M2M by quicker guards.

Honestly, if GMAC feels like he can fix and or mitigate the bad of George game (bizarre turnovers), as well as getting George to buy in to the GMAC way, I’m super optimistic. If the above doesn’t happen then let’s see what happens in the portal. George’s good is really good, at times, brilliant play.
