Class of 2026 CG Ryan Moesch (NY) Offered

KA point guard idea I agree is utterly absurd. I agree with a post a month or so ago. Hoping that he grows another one to two inches and gains weight/ strength. Potentially play the 3. He is a capable passer however he has such a long way to go defensively, I think he can get there. Going to take a bit of time. High upside if he keeps working
My favorite modern offenses have the ball in constant movement. I believe our offense this past year suffered with both JJ and Kiyan, when he was in, pounding the ball wayyyyy too much. In a good offense, guys are in movement, and they understand how their movement affects the defense. And, it may open up a passing lane to someone else, if not himself. It's far more sophisticated and requires selfless basketball. But, the net result is best for EVERY player. Because, eventually, it gets open looks for the guys you want open looks for.

These are all systems taught by coaches to the players. The "unselfishness" is because guys are wide open because the system got them wide open. We will be playing the same offensive system we did under JAB and Red.

Absolutely, but you also have to have players that have the skillset to carry out the plan, no?

Skillsets like that are taught.

By good coaches, who know how to teach & implement such systems.

We’ve never had that at Syracuse.

TBD if GMac will bring that, or at a minimum hire a staff member who will.

Here’s hoping!

Let me correct you here- If you actually read my posts I never once was saying he should be a PG. I simply was pointing out that with his skill sets and size his progression should include modeling his game as someone in the mold of G/KrisJo to be able to be another primary ball handler and playmaker along with more commitment on the glass and defensively. Big difference from saying he should he a PG.

Based on what? Where are you getting this information from? Also Red’s half court sets came from the last 5-6 years of the JB era but prior to that we ran a lot more motion year in year out. Comments like this are taking a lot of liberty professing such things as fact without evidence coming from the same crowd yelling about anything that could be a positive and considered progress under this new staff.

If you watch replays from prior to 2016-17 vs after you will see some significant differences. Cooney was probably the last player of his type where we ran certain sets that are much closer to what you see today. Perfect example is look at the off ball movement UConn runs. They actually don’t use a ton of different sets but guys cut and come off screens similar to what you see with option routes in football as they read the defense to maximize finding space. That’s absolutely things we saw with the personnel we had in the past albeit not the 3 ball or rim runs with little mid range that the analytics driven offenses are keen on today.

I think everyone needs to let this play out. Nobody knows anything about what playbook will look like on offense yet be it good or bad nor does anyone have a clue how Moesch is going to fair at this level.

Let me add some figures because while the sets we ran were better in the past the lack of defense and athleticism in favor of just shooting glazed over the fact we had some efficient offenses recently but too focused on shooting and unbalanced.

Our Kpom adjO rank before Red:

2023-81
2022-15
2021-24
2020-21
2019-59
2018-135
2017-30
2016-50
2015-117
2014-28
2013-26

I could go on- we’ve not been unable to run efficient offenses under JB we’ve struggled to have balance on both sides of the ball. That’s the key. The numbers do not support the expectation that GMacs experience here would mean poor offensive efficiency without evidence of seeing how he plays with a deeper P4 level roster

JAB offensive system always changed dependent on the players we had. Red specifically tried to implement the Team Takeover system at Syracuse. I'm sure Gerry will implement concepts from the last 20+ years he learned from being a player and assistant at Syracuse that could be similar to what we have seen with Red and JAB. I also think that GMAC will be very strict on only bringing in players that show a competency level of being able to read defenses, have a level of understanding of what you can do and your teammates can do, and the ability to have quick reaction to what the defense is giving you. I don't think Gerry will try to sell the fan base on a specific brand of basketball in the press conference (because that is all subject to change and can be different game to game), but more so the character he expects from those apart of the program to gain a competitive advantage.

Nice article with quotes from Cushing coach. Looks like Ryan was officially offered a spot at Cuse like we all expected

Moesh reminds me of Darling at St. John’s. If Syracuse wants a tough point guard I’ve loved Nyk Lewis from VCU all year.

How many times have we seen a freshman that outperforms ranking because a coach with a good eye saw something others didn’t? This is the perfect kind of no expectations gamble to bring over behind a portal haul. If he can’t hack it no one remembers.
I guess so? But we need as many "sure things" as possible imo

How does this post warrant a dislike, LpoolNative ? You think Lobdell is on the team for his stellar PG play?

If he wants to go crazy and earn it as a backup I’m fine with it - PG1 next year needs to be a top focus and not someone we are worried about playing big minutes given we will have to spend here along with at the 5. Maximize the ball handlers we will have and leave open room for competition.
