cinci supensions

Xavier just as bad ... suspend Holloway and the other for 2 games and 1 game respectively. I guess their win/loss record is more important than the demeanor of their kids on and off the court. Just watch their press conference (Xavier's) ... disgraceful!!

Race did play a large role in establishing sports' culture by the exclusion of people of color. Different discussion but significant in how violence in sports is viewed or allowed. It's accepted as normal that white people fighting is perfectly fine but blacks fighting is very bad. Clearly a racist and double standard exists where the perception of sports cultures and the perception of white vs. black culture has been blurred. Blacks are viewed as more violent or "thuggish" and that perception makes it easier to view basketball fights as somehow more egregious than fights in other sports.

The biggest difference between all these sports that people are conveniently leaving out is that baseball and hockey are played in confined arenas. There is very little chance that violence on the playing field (or ice) will spill into the crowd (although there have been several exceptions). People forget that fighting in the NBA used to be not a very big deal at all. Guys would get in a fight and they would be suspended for 4 or 5 games. Then the "malice at the palace" happened and all bets were off.

Also, the last I checked, the NFL was a predominantly black sport, but when there is a fight during a game there, people aren't all up in arms over it. Usually if there is a fight in NFL games, guys get ejected from the current game and maybe receive a fine and that's it. Do people forget about the infamous Andre Johnson vs. Cortland Finnegan fight last year? That was a wild fight with haymakers being thrown all over the place. Both players were ejected and fined and that was it. There was no racial outrage over it. It happened and it was over.

Don't make something a racial issue when it isn't. It's a convenient excuse for people acting like godd*mn fools and getting away with it. People here would say the same damn thing if it was 20 white guys on the basketball court throwing sucker punches and stomping guys out when there were on the ground. There is no place for it on the basketball court.

BE seems happy with it.
Official Statement from Commissioner John Marinatto: ""The very unfortunate events that occurred in the final seconds of yesterday's Cincinnati-Xavier men's basketball game certainly have no place within intercollegiate athletics. The University of Cincinnati has responded with swift, expeditious and appropriate actions which The BIG EAST Conference fully supports."

Of course he is. He doesn't want to give Cincy another reason to jump conferences. If he comes down too hard, he'll never have shot to talk them out of leaving when the time comes.

I think the arena thing is largely irrelevant. And I think David Stern overreacted to the "malice at the palace" incident. Now they treat every little skirmish like it was a Battle Royale.
The NFL may be predominantly black but the culture of the NFL is most definitely white.
I'm not making this a racial issue. It already is because basketball will always be viewed through the prism of black/"urban" culture. That's just reality.

i'm cool with the 6 games provided that it comes with a season long probation period . one more punch thrown and you're done. period.no appeal. that basically would give every player in the league one free shot at gates. would love to see him get cold cocked once a game knowing that retaliation gets him banned.

It does. The penalty for a second fight is a year suspension.

6 Games.. so that means it only lasts until the first BE game vs Pitt and that was on the road and probably a loss anyway..

Handing out a weak suspension like that is just asking the NCAA to get involved -- stupid move by their school, if you ask me.

I don't know, but you can bet that if one hockey player knocked an opponent down with a punch and then the player's teammate came over and stomped on the opponent's face, people would be outraged.

They wear skates in hockey. That would be a different situation.

I'm not all that upset. I think he deserved at least 10, but I'm not all worked up about 6. I suppose if he does have a history of this nonsense that's different (someone mentioned he hit someone last year), but otherwise it was a kid doing some stupid . That's what kids do.

I was a bit more concerned honestly with Tu Holloway calling him & his teammates gangsters and everyone being okay with that. They didn't seem to even realize anything they did was wrong.

Not sure if Gates has issued a statement yet.

Fights that happen in the magical world of sports are not treated the same as those that happen on the streets, and it has always been that way.

You tell me why it is a one game suspension in Hockey, and 6 games in basketball. Really, people have a problem when a black guy is swinging his fists, but when a white guy does the same thing? eh... You need to think this out.
This is one of the stupidest things I have ever written on this board. If you can't figure out the difference between a hockey fight (which happens rarely in college, and happens for a reason in the pros) and a bench clearing brawl in basketball (where a player was sucker punched for trash talking and then kicked in the head then I don't know if you can be helped. The fact you bring race into this pretty much solidifies this point. If a white guy stomped on the guy's face I would say the same thing. The fact you immediately draw color into this lets me know what kind of person you are.

I guess that sums it up...
well answer me this question then, how much do you understand the game of hockey besides it being a bunch of white guys that fight? How many games do you watch a year?

Race?

When did hockey become the standard for white -dominated sports? Do you think if a white golfer sucker-punched and stomped on an opponent, he'd be suspended for 1/6th of his season? I think he never plays college golf again. Different sports have different expectations.

My theory on basketball is that there's often a fight brewing just below the surface. Preventing a hockey-like atmosphere has to be a priority for game officials and rules-makers.

I have no idea if 6 games is fair but I have two complaints:
  • Cronin set an expectation that more serious action would be taken with his post-game comments. I expected the sucker punch/stomp guy (same guy?) to be off the team.
  • If not the same guy, they should be at least double the suspension of everyone else involved.

Jesus, Melo got more games than that and he slapped a guy.

I don't think you can chalk this up to stupid stuff kids do. This isn't going out and getting drunk. He straight up punched a dude in the face, hard enough to knock down a guy who is like 7 foot, 250. He assaulted someone. I'm not necessarily saying arrest the guy, but damn. 6 games for that? At least the suspension includes a game at Pitt, though a cynic m ay say they didn't think they could win that one anyway. The next 5 are all cakewalks, with the exception of Oklahoma at home.

And yeah, after reading what Cronin had to say, I definitely expected more than 6 games.

Lost in all this player bashing is the fact that the officials should have stopped the trash talk earlier with a couple of well placed technicals. The trash talking was out of control and the officials should share some of the blame.

But some on here would argue that the trash talking is just bravado and is good for the game, helps players to get in the right frame of mind...at least that seemed to be the argument when Devo was doing it.

Dan Patrick just said he would've kicked Gates off the team...

Any day where Syracuse is ranked #1 and there is a "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" reference on the hoops forum is a good day indeed.

how many of you would have kicked DC off the team for coming off the bench and throwing haymakers?

Those two clips probably eliminate DC from ever being seriously considered for a coaching position, unless of course we try to reestablish and intercollegiate boxing program at SU.

he should be named VP in Charge of Player Discipline in the expanded ACC.

the other obvious thing that was evident there was how volatile that dude was. neither play really involved him and in 2 seconds he was throwing haymakers...

As to your coaching comment...Rudy T got to coach (wait...oh nevermind). But in seriousness, how about Ewing?
