CJ Fair/James Southerland - Will one of these guys ever step up...

Anyone who is going to call out players for not stepping up needs to watch every game before making such statements. Every one of our top 8-9 players have contributed ("stepped up") in meaningful ways thus far in the season - not just in the garbage games in Nov/Dec. To say that JS hasn't made a meaningful 3 since the Cornell game is absolute scat.

To me, Kris looks about the listed 6'7," James looks a legit 6'8," and CJ's probably about 6'6".
that is great except when they stand next to each other CJ is definitely taller than KJo

Bottom line is they both need to finish better. CJ needs to finish layups more consistently, and James needs to knock down his WIDE OPEN 3's. He is wide open on nearly all of his shots, and converts on a very low percentage in comparison.

They both are what they are at this point. CJ, as I've always felt, has a better upside and is much more versatile but James can help us become an elite team if he can start knocking down open shots.

James looks like he has the green light at all times now. His play is going to be crucial for us, especially without Melo.

and become a consistent contributor?

The last time James made a 3 pointer in a meaningful minute was against Cornell... CJ looks lost on defense and was exploited again today.

This is highly annoying to me. JS was our leading scorer against ND. You, of course, think that was meaningless because we lost. But how small minded is that? The games we lose are, by definition our most difficult. For JS to step up in that game when the whole team was melting down - and on the road - tells me the kid is legit. Some people will always bag on the kid no matter what. You are apparently one of them - so why start a thread like this? Like anybody is going to change your ill-considered opinion.

When they overload the zone to one side, it's difficult for CJ to get up on the guard and then fall back to the forward if needed.

And we haven't even played Cornell since November 30, 2010. That is quite the drought that you believe him to be on.

It's possible both players are pressing a bit and it's also possible the loss of Fab has made it harder to be free to do the things they were doing before without the added pressure on d. Fair doesn't have the freedom inside he did before because the guy covering Fab can swing down low now and help more than he could before when Fab was there. Southerland has to fight more to get open and seems to me is rushing his shot a little more but I could be wrong. The two of them have to adjust their games a bit without Fab there and can't continue to do the same exact things they were doing when Fab was there. I'm hoping this time without the big guy will help their game and make them better overall players.

James is 3-20 on three's in his last 5 games. For those of you who think he has been great and consistent for us... there isn't much for me to argue with you about. We'll just have to agree to disagree. Of course I was being a little silly saying he hasn't hit a shot since Cornell. Lighten up!

On the season as a whole he is shooting .338 from downtown. Not horrible against the cupcakes, but he hasn't been very good in Big East play. If James were to become a more reliable 3 point threat, it would be HA-UUUGE for us.

James value obviously is as a shooter which he has been inconsistent since conference play started, but even more so as the guard on the inbounds man during the press. His length and athleticism create huge problems and force the other team to inbound to the corner where we trap and force turnovers. I'll be damned if the turnovers when we pressed against Cinci didn't win us the game.

And CJ is not flashy but has been consistent as anyone I think all year. Now could he step up more, I think so, but that is part of the disease of more, having so many scorers sometimes does make it harder for one to step up, as they all (minus Dion) don't seem like they want the ball if it means pissing another player off.

The disease of more is a blessing in College B-ball when you have a coach like Boeheim that can even keep Waiters in check this year

You can pencil in CJ's 6-8 points 5 rebounds and a steal in 25 pretty much every night

Terrible defense by CJ all game. He keeps extending on WVU's guards up high and leaving Kevin Jones alone on the baseline and open in the corner. WVU ran that play at least 6 times and every time CJ vacated to double the guard he kept getting burned. He did it again on the last play but was lucky that Jones missed the shot. Can't believe no coach got on him and corrected it. Don't double the guard on the wing, stay with Jones on the baseline. Ugh!
Close except he was in Jones face so bad, Jones tossed up a fadeaway. He absolutely stayed with him on that play.

they are role players in the current pecking order. when on the court, they are doing what JB wants them to do. neither one is going to "step up" and take over a game because that is not the role JB has designated for them.

While I personally think JB is misusing James (he would be far more effective if he took more twos and fewer threes, IMO), I also know that JB knows about 1000x more about basketball in general and his team in particular than I do and that there is a reason for the roles he has assigned.

Have to agree. I don't get why some folks expect every player to be a star. I actually like JS quite a bit. Do I wish he was hitting his 3's? Of course but his game has been a pleasant surprise this year. He is a solid role player coming off the bench with some length to help on D and the boards. Any 3's he hits are gravy.

James biggest shot each game is his first, If he hits a three in transition or on a kick out, he can hit the next 4 or five in a row, if he misses his confidence is shot and he is much less of a threat

I will make you an avatar wager on James this coming game. I bet he makes 3 three pointers against St. John's if so I get to pick out your avatar for the month of Feb if he doesn't you can pick mine. Any interest?

No way! I full expect James to play well against bad teams. I'll gladly accept and gladly lose this bet for the UCONN or L'Ville games.

fair enough just remind me of this because I will forget about it

Umm...on the photos. Depth perception? Hello.
I went through every photo on the .com, and regardless of angle I did not see one that showed the reverse, so please by all means find some that show KJo taller than CJ, I will wait

you won't find them

KJO is not bigger than CJ. Who is our emergency center?
