Clemson players on the Syracuse zone: "It was real easy to get the ball moving and get everybody shots."

I didn’t need that confirmation, I saw it live.
Well I think it's pretty good evidence against those who claim they are never critical of JB. Yeah they didn't flat out say JB is no longer doing a good job - that's an opinion and not really their place. But they made it pretty easy for people to draw that conclusion.

Well sure, but think about how well rested we were to light it up on the offensive end.

Clemson didn’t even shoot all that well considering the quality of looks they got. 38.9% from 3 is pedestrian when almost all of the shots attempts were completely wide open. They were basically running a 3-point shooting drill and it might as well have been a coincidence that there were 5 SU players standing on the court during the drill.

And half the ones that they missed they got their own rebound anyway. The first possession summed up the entire game.

It didn’t help any but did anyone notice we went to a 1-3-1 for about 5 mins in the 2nd half?

You think after, what, 30+ straight years of playing the same defense, that your conference rivals maybe have figured out every vulnerability and exploitable weakness of that defensive scheme? Even Colgate has us figured out! It is clear that whatever benefit the 2-3 flex zone used to provide has long since been arbitraged out of existence by opposing coaches. And not having the head coach hitting the road for recruitment of top 100 players is going to provide us a pipeline of inferior recruits to man that exploitable defense. And the apparent absence of a coherent offensive scheme is mindboggling.

We've done some changes in the zone in a few games we've been defending really poorly. We have a terrible combo of players for the zone this year, combined with lack of experience. The transfer portal is not good for building a team with the necessary experience to play the 2-3 zone effectively anymore. Combine that with all the stats on teams shooting more 3s and shooting them better...it's just not possible anymore to play zone exclusively.

Mostly all true.
And you hit the bottom line: "...it's just not possible anymore to play zone exclusively."
Key word is "exclusively."

Zone can be effective.
But if it's not working you MUST come out of it.
At least you'll make it tougher for the opponent to get wide open shots.

Too many times the zone is ineffective because teams are shooting over and through it.
Would Colgate, just for example, have gotten 100 points against a team with better talent if the Orange went to man?

looks like we switched to trunk monkey with 17 minutes still left in the second ? i only watched the condensed game but that's when we starting pressuring the inbounds. thought HOF jim said we couldn't press for extended minutes ?

It's yet another year with players that aren't a fit for the defense, and another year of no changes and similarly terrible results.

Joe was, is, and always will be, a terrible zone defender. Much of our issues stem from not having size and length up top.

Jesse is not a good defender. He'll block some shots with length, but he's always out of position, getting bodied out of the way or late to react in the paint. Again, the bad D up top makes his job tougher, but he's not a classic zone center.

The wings are just bad. Only Brown has any real length and undestanding of what needs to be done, and he's not a top athlete. Bell, Taylor, Quadir, Benny - all bad defenders with either size limitations, length and athleticism questions or just no idea what they are doing. Copeland might be our worst defender based on what he gave last night.

This would be a bad man team, so that's not really the solution, but sitting in the same, tired zone that every team in America knows how to attack is just insane. Every single opponent we've faced this year has had no issues finding open 3's. Most have bigs that can pop to the FT area and score or distribute from there, and have no problems scoring within a few feet.

clemson also had a ton of bounce feed passes for dunks underneath.

Yeah guys we are the idiots because we are complaining about being 16-12, be happy and thankful that we beat #23 NC state last week. Gosh man BH is insuferable!

This is one of the adjustments that can be made out of the zone when the players gain a little experience in it. I agree completely that the base defense cannot be consistently successful in today's game. Positional responsibility and first rotation aren't enough. Go back and watch the 2018 games during the Sweet Sixteen run. Or even the SDSU game from 2021. Virtually every time the ball goes to a corner there is a trap. Guards doubling and trapping at the top of the key to stop penetration. Secondary defenders coming over to create steals because they can anticipate movement and come of off primary position or first roatation to disrupt. That level of defense can still be successful even if you put 7 three point shooters on the court. But it takes time for that level to be achieved. You cannot perform at that level with three or four freshmen on the court at the same time. And you cannot get to that level without some degree of roster continuity. I think this year's roster was constructed with that in mind, but have very little confidence that in today's landscape we can keep enough of a core together to reap the benefits of a year's experience learning the nuances.

Probably shouldn’t press at all, me and four dudes from this board could break it.

Yup. It only works when the opponent can’t convert 2 on 1’s but can’t resist trying.

At least a few years ago we had Matt Moyer spazzing out. Was good for entertainment value at least. Now we don’t even have that.
