Clemson Postgame

2 years is a short leash and shouldn't happen unless the dumpster is on fire.

It was on fire for Louisville and Payne, but you still want to make the move end of season if you are 2 years in.

I see very little hope in how Red is coaching the team this year and how the team is performing. The dumpster is smoking. It may be engulfed in flames after the next run of games. The blowouts against middle-pack or better teams is really bad.

Plus that one Louisville fan that posted that we need to do the conference a favor and fire our "Kenny Payne" and the follow-up posts he made where he basically said how we were playing, what we weren't doing, what we appeared to lack from coaching... it was all red flags they know well from Kenny Payne.

Honestly, that has stuck with me. They have seen these signals before and know from recent, first-hand experience.
Every little piece of information is more and more damning. I don’t expect and will not begrudge the administration if there isn’t a midseason firing, but if he’s around next year, I’m worried that’ll be the nail. But Louisville is back to being Louisville. So there’s hope.

20 wins nowadays is comparable to an NFL running back hitting the 1000 yard mark in a 17 game season,
you can toss out the old record books. every stat is now an asterisk . kids today playing 6 years ?
and playing against lesser competion since the good players all leaped. most # anything is meaningless.

What’s the point of having him as the figure head coach? If you have someone managing the roster talent, someone in charge of defense, some one in charge of offense and some one in charge of subbing what exactly would he be doing besides giving awful press conferences and looking confused.
public relations and recruiting...players like him and want to play for him...(although if he keeps sucking theres no way that will last)

US Men's Soccer had a game tonight against Costa Rica. MLS guys, but boy it was entertaining, they played hard and won 3-0, after winning 3-1 vs. Venezuela on Saturday. Much more fun than watching SU hoops right now. I can't stand being 15-20 points down in the first half of literally every game.
perfect example of changing a coach and changing the performance...pochettino took over for berhalter and its night and day.

usmnt is my other favorite team and I've long thought that theres a lot of parallels between berhalter and autry

There is simply no way all the players on this team are individually as bad as they look collectively. If the school wants to field a team that plays basketball, it needs to hire a new coach because the current coach and ataff continue to demonstrate they have no idea what they are doing. When Louisville had Payne, I kept wondering how can they be that bad. Now I know, and it is simply an embarrassment.

Rant over.
lets be real here...how many of us in red's position would walk away ?

lets even imagine red thinks he is in over his head and realizes that he is a "kenny payne" himself...i think red thinks he is capable and has confidence in himself (but just speculating on that )

would any of us walk away from such a high paying job? will red ever get another job that pays this well?

what would you do?

i think most would simply try to last in the job as long as possible ...until they are forced out. the only coaches ive seen quiting jobs are the ones whove been around a while and surely have a nice fat bank account...

I'm actually defending the decision to hire him. I'm not defending Red. If you read my post I would fire him if not for Melo. I'm on Record on this. I simply understand why he was hired and why he will be our coach next season.
Thanks for clarifying. I also agree with you why we hired him. I'm at a point where all the money in the world cannot hide Red's flaws. Just my opinion. It makes it tough when one of your own fails and that is where we're at...

I hear ya. It just sounds like its because this is not how SU operates to fire after just 2 seasons. JW may not have full authority to pull the plug and need BOT approval and some of those BOTs are content w status quo and dont want to have to deal with an outside hire that may not give them the access they like and have now.

None of it has anything to do with current state of the program and winning. Its like a corrupt political office.

I mean Gross fired Paul P after a bad bowl game loss, I dont understand why JW cant fire AA after a losing season.
Gross executed orders

You're welcome. I'm as frustrated as anyone. I used to have an orange rabbit foot that I carried to games when I was a little boy. Been a fan since I was 6.
I hope Red pulls a rabbits foot himself next year but unfortunately i don't see it.

Shoot 53.8% from the field, 52.4% from 3-point land (making 11 3s), 83.3% from the FT line, and get blown out. Someone has to explain to me why Majstorovic gets so much playing time. No points. 1 shot. 3 rebounds. No assists. Any speculation on when Freeman will be back?
Bad timing on starting to shot the ball well - if they had just shot, say, 47/37/72 in earlier games, we probably would 2 or 3 more wins.

I love his hustle and heart, but Kyle Cuffe may be the worst dunker in Syracuse history. He may be the first player in NCAA history with a higher three-point percentage than dunk percentage. The one he missed last night accelerated the inevitable.
At least Cuffe gets to the rim. I remember Louis “the chair” McCroskey getting blocked before he could get to then rim on roughly 97% of his drives.

Rick would have been my choice to succeed JB.

He was in Iona obviously waiting for the next challenge.

He was an assistant and friend of JB, would be hard for JB to get upset over not going internal because it is somewhat internal.

Could have retained Red and Griff as assistants they should have no problem serving under another HOF coach and be in consideration for the HC position later when Rick leaves. Red could have learned from Rick how to coach different from JB.

If at the end of Rick's term they want to go external it's much easier with JB gone and 3 years removed from that situation.

Rick is up there in age so a 2-3 year term as a transition would have been perfect for both sides.

I was against hiring Red, or Gerry or bringing back Hop.

I was hoping for something like this, too. The press coverage would have been great, and likely would have referenced them meeting in the '96 final. Such a shame. Missed opportunity, IMO.

Yeah, me too. It was not a popular opinion on this board though. However, I think that hire would have gotten us back to regular ncaa appearances. He would have righted the ship rather than sink it to where it is now. It would have been a bold choice and clearly show everyone that we're serious.

You are not kidding last year whenever someone suggested Pitino it was pretty much responded with negativity with pictures of blood sucking vampires...we are simply too good too ethical too moral to hire someone like Pitino.

Anyway that ship has sailed.

What's scary now is how bad the rest of the season would look with the tough schedules still ahead, and how we still haven't hit bottom as I think bottom will be year 3.

Rick was never and I mean never getting hired at SU. He was a complete mess with the NCAA and SU just went through their second probation. SU wanted no part of his history with the NCAA. He could have volunteered and never got the job. Fans have been barking about Pitino for years and all it was is a lot of hot air. I can’t believe fans are still talking about it like it was ever an option.

He’s also a NYC guy who was born there, has family there and has never hidden his love for NYC. There were rumors about UNLV, Illinois and even Maryland making overtures to him while at Iona - St John’s was always going to be his choice.

Well, we've seen that "playing it safe" has worked out really well in hoops.

I don't mean to be too harsh. I apologize for that. Syracuse should never be a fringe tournament team.
With the exception of year 1 in the ACC. We have not played to the level of what the program was in the Big East days. It’s a shame because you include Pitt and Louisville fans as well that probably feel they haven’t played up to the level they were in the Big East most of the time as well. It was supposed to be the best basketball conference year in and out when all of us joined. I am biased, but i definitely see our downward trend as a program, with a downward trend in the overall popularity of College Basketball. The tourney is still a huge deal, but the sport, especially in November and December is not just a backseat to the NFL and College Football, but the 3rd row of the car. Would definitely help the sport if we get our act together since we have a huge fair weather bandwagon fan base that is completely disengaged not just in Syracuse basketball, but by association College Basketball.

the thing with the old BIG EAST was every dog had it's day. between 1981/91 9 different teams won or shared titles. Georgetown , Syracuse, ST john's , Villanova, BC, Pitt , U conn, and even providence and seton hall all had their runs winning conference titles and BET titles. even the teams we admitted later like miami, ND, tech and louisville all had their moments. We've done absolutely nothing in the ACC . it's actually quite embarrassing how bad we've been in this conference and especially ACCT.
