Clemson Postgame

r.j. godfrey is an animal. 6'7" 250 lb senior with power and awareness . best player on the court yesterday . white is too slight pose any threat to his muscle on either end . only played 11 minutes . and sadly despite one great block kyle was pretty much invisible against their bigs and the inside passing. souare if nothing else did hustle his butt off. has the size but just lacks the skills . too bad we don't have a real big guy coach. second half was basically the donnie freeman show. only reason we kept it close. not crazy about his trey at the end . refs let them play. a lot of reviews for flagrant but gladly none stuck. those complains about the officials note that the fouls were 14-18 . and we were intentionally fouling last 1 st half.( and i don't believe clemson was ever in the bonus second half either). and finally i just don't see any improvement in J.J. 's game over the summer either shooting or game management. he and red and staff are the only constant from last years disappointment . 34 minutes of reckless nothing . can betsey play the 2 and j.j back up point ?

Stop with this out coached nonsense! Players win games! What coaching strategy did Red deploy...or didn't deploy, that had he done so, we would have won? Clemson won because they scored more points than Syracuse. Simple as that. Coaching had nothing to do with that loss. Cuse fans need to recognize that the game has changed dramatically from our glory years. We may never get to that level again and the Coach is a very small part of this dynamic. Players are signing with schools and moving from schools based on Cash!! Our check book can only do so much. Sadly, this is our new norm. The Syracuse Block "S" doesn't carry the Swag that it did back in the heyday of the Big East. High School recruiting is less significant in this NIL/Portal era. We have to figure out how to adjust. More Cash would help...

That has to be a small sample size. No reason not to make a change, unless something miraculous happen.

In the real world, Red would be put on a 90 day PIP (performance improvement plan). He would be required to submit weekly reports on what his plan was to turn the season around. To do that, you need to take a good, hard look in the mirror and swallow your pride.

Does Red have that in himself. Is he able to make changes where needed? Donnie was great yesterday. Everyone else was subpar. What adjustments will Red make for the next game.

Somebody needed one of these for Christmas:

Godfrey definitely posed some problems - Scott was falling out of his seat when Betsey held his own on that one defensive set where he forced him out of bounds.

Soo…yeah. It’s coaching.

Went my first game this year today. Got close enough to see/hear player interaction. Players looked lost on offense and didn’t play with purpose on that end of the court.

Just horrible the difference in the two teams out of timeouts. They abused our players with set plays. We on the other hand did not.

Lots of stuff people have pointed in this thread have been well stated.

I will defend the players a bit. It’s hard to play well without a game plan. And on the offensive end, it is clearly a rudderless ship.

The guy I’m going to defend is Nait. There is no plan to execute. It’s hard to be a point guard, when the other 4 players aren’t running sets or running them correctly. Theres no way he suddenly turned into a dunce. If you give him a good offense to run. He’ll execute it.

At the end of the game Donnie essentially said “give me the ball and get out of my way”. It almost worked.

If there’s no sets to run, it renders George, Kings and Betsy useless. They can’t create on their own. The only players we have that can are Donnie, and Kiyan, and I only trust one of those two. JJ really can’t either, and he’s way too sloppy with the ball to be given the leeway he has. I simply can’t trust a senior that at least once a game dribbles the ball out of bounds like a 3rd grader. I’m sure his teammates notice as well. You can say to reporters “he’s our leader” but I get the sense none of them truly believe it.

The defense is good enough to compete. The offense is inept. And I suspect Englested is responsible for the defense.

Next coach up..,
This is spot on. Four guys standing outside the three point line while one dribbles. Not drive and dishes, no cuts, nothing resembling an offensive set.

Remember how cooney and rautins would just be constantly running all around over and under (let alone at times setting) screens? No way to be an effective PG in this “offense”. Magic Johnson would have less than 5 assists.

So pitiful to watch and know that we all see the exact same things without being the coach and the one guy paid to be the coach doesn’t.

Red is a wonderful human, but an awful in game coach.

And also, I’m not at practice, but during the game, allen griffin does not speak at all to the players or the coaches. He is absolutely disengaged and it’s disrespectful to the players.

Red Watch: he’s down to 6 more losses before he’s terminated.

I wonder if putting Englestad in charge now might actually right the ship.

I know we'd never do that, but... He has HC experience and might be the better option to see out the season at this point with the writing clearly on the wall.

if clemson ever has to play with a ref crew that calls fouls on contact they will foul out in the first half and lose in a blowout

It’s shocking that anyone could have watched the game yesterday and conclude coaching doesn’t matter.
Everyone keeps talking about Coaching! What changes or coaching strategies could Red have deployed, that might have changed the outcome? Interested in responses from all the people who think Red coached a bad game.

Yeah... Fire Autry. He should have grabbed Feeman by the throat halfway through the first half and choked the living daylights out of him. Then he would have scored 10 points before halftime and we would have one. Pathetic coaching.

All this talk about Coaching...JJ Starling had 4 points!!!, Sadiq White had 2 points...The guy who has been hurt all year and missed the last 9 games...lead the team with 18 points. The team had only two players score in double digits and got killed by Clemson in the paint. The coach can't put the ball in the hoop...

You must be trolling at this point. There are a million posts on here from this season and last that point out Red’s inability to coach at every level of granularity (e.g. no offensive system, substitution patterns, etc) you can think of. Nobody can possibly be this obtuse.

I think there’s a few steps between being consistently unprepared with clearly talented players who don’t execute and strangling a player. That’s just me though.

Also, I love the idea that no coach could be successful with these players.

Goddam it.

Really!!! JJ scores 4 points!! Sadiq White scores 2 points!! Freeman scores 18 points after missing the last month and 9 games....Yet, we should fire Autry! Players have to play! Our "Bigs" got manhandled in the post by Clemson.../that's Coach Autry's fault. Cuse fans are clueless about this game...and they expect just because we are Syracuse, we should win every time out. LOL....The quality of play is on the players...How are you going to win a game when your SR captain and most experienced player...scores only 4 points..in what universe, does that kind of game produce victory?

so if John Wooden was resurrected, then we still wouldn’t execute?

Goddam it.
You are talking about running sets on offense...as if that is the answer. I saw guys missing wide open jump shots. Basketball is about putting the ball in the hoop and finding a way. We just didn't do that yesterday.

Well, many coaches would have started Freeman and fed him a few early bunny attempts in the paint to get him going. That also would have limited White’s useless early minutes.

Many coaches wouldn’t have let Starling play a lousy 31 minutes when both Anthony and Betsey were far more effective in half that playing time.

Many coaches would have schemes to set up Kingz for good shots instead of the offense resorting to pass-and-chuck around the three point line.

Many coaches would be more prepared defensively coming out of time outs and not give up four easy buckets to the opposition.

As I said to you last night, if you can’t see the deficiencies in this staff after yesterday then there’s no chance you ever will.

I almost never, ever say that coaching cost a team a game. In any sport. But yesterday we lost because of Red. It was clear as day.

This team doesn’t get the quality looks that it should.

60% less iso ball. More off ball cuts from sadiq. Pick and pop do betsey off inbound plays. Way more ball movement.

The coach could have run the same action in the first half that Freeman going in the second half.

The coach could have run some plays for Kingz.

The coach could have installed an offense that does not involve or require 3 players to watch one other player wait or move in to position to set a pick while George, JJ or Anthony pounded all the air out of the ball.

He could have demanded that JJ and George never ever shoot a step back three.

He could have demanded that JJ learn how to shoot a left-handed layup.

He could have left Kingz in when he was scoring and not sit him on the bench.

He could teach the team at least one more in bounds play.

He never should have gone to a zone even if only for a few possessions. It resulted in a wide open three for a team that is not a good three-point shooting team.

He could have made the decision to bring in another guard and let JJ go into the portal or act least know and understand JJ is not a 35 minute player on tournament team.

He could have called in sick so the Board would know if there is a better option for the rest of the season already sitting on the bench (not that SU would or should do that).

so if John Wooden was resurrected, then we still wouldn’t execute?
John Wooden...I was waiting for that name to pop up. I loved Wooden, studied UCLA basketball since the 1960's. Wooden was a great strategist, but he also had the best talent in college hoops every year. The best evidence of his of his strategic genius was on display during the first two Championship runs..the Walt Hazzard and Goodrich teams, where he pressed all game. That strategy was actually developed by one of his assistants and not Wooden. Much of Wooden's famed full court and half court pressing strategy is not even used today due to the athleticism and speed of today's athletes. Systems work..only if you can recruit players that fit the system you want to run. I don't know what Red's offensive system is. I just know, that for me, i would like to see a lot more ball movement....But, I also see a lot of guys missing wide open jumps shots time after time. This team seems best suited for transition basketball..but guys have to shoot better for any system to work.
