Closing the 2013 Class

Poor Austin Wilson. What does this kid have to do for some respect around here. He's now my new favorite QB and I hope a 2 or 3 year starter.

seriously i was reading this thread and this was all i was thinking. i feel like i am one of the very few who actually think this kid is going to be a player. can't believe now all the hype is on Kimble. AW has the size to come in and play right away, and is a very accurate passer. that's all that we need in offenses that primarily dink and dunk now a days. so what he doesn't have a hose.

I think that both Austin Wilson and Mitch Kimble are going to have to prove themselves, and what's great is that they both will get that opportunity. I fully understood the hype we created for Zach Allen because he was doing his thing against some of the best competition in the country. It's just so tough for any of us to project Wilson & Kimble onto the college scene.

I'm going to play the role of cautious optimist for both Austin and Mitch. If I had to pick one of the 2 to bandwagon on, I must geographically pull for Austin since he's from my area.

I really don't want to pee on parades, but I do need to warn that Austin played against a bunch of teams in high school that just can't scrape together much talent. That's not to say that he cannot succeed - it's just to point out that he isn't used to seeing anything near what he will face in college, and the same likely applies to Mitch.

Pointless Sidenote: When Conner Cramer was in the picture as well as Mitch Kimble, I couldn't help but think of the Dazed & Confused character Mitch Kramer.

Funny, I've been saying Mitchy. Mitchy, Mitchy, Mitchy for a few days now.

Spot on. Cam Newton was a three star prospect coming out of highschool that some were surprised won the QB competition at Auburn. Johnny Manziel was a three star smallish guy standing 6-1 and under 200 lbs coming out of highschool. He only won the heisman as a redshirt freshman and beat the eventual NC on the way. We have no idea which kid will be better at this point.

First of all Cam Newton was a 4 star out of Atlanta and ended up at Florida out of high school ... he had his laptop incident at UF and ended up at Blinn CC before going to Auburn where he was expected to start ... I know guys at Auburn .. the question wasn't if Newton would start it was who would back him up, not sure where you got that. Second of all while Manziel was only a 3 star he was ranked 22nd overall or in that range by most services. Second of all the coaches at each respective institution (TCU/SU) will play a major role in how they develop and even if Wilson or Kimble end up being "better" down the road doesn't mean that Allen couldn't have been better than either of them at SU had he gone down that road.

All of this is mere conjecture ... I'm thrilled to have the kids we have and I want players who want to be at SU ... but Manziel and Newton have no bearing on this discussion whatsoever ... GA football is not that much unlike Texas football ... again has no bearing on this discussion anyway. Is TX ball a higher level than Illinois ball? Absolutely ... but we did just fine with our last Illinois QB so I'll be happy to cheer on Kimble on Saturdays and FWIW PA has churned out a fair share of fantastic QBs.

  • Thinks Edwards will likely flip to FSU
  • Said Rob Moore has taken over Edward's recruitment and has been assigned the NYC Metro area recruiting specialist by Shafe
  • Thinks it's better than 50% we hold on to Malik Brown
  • Is impressed with the staff's recruiting effort in the very short time on the job...

Obviously both past and present coaching felt the need for another QB. If we are to trust their instincts on this, then whether or not we are talking about AW or MK, does it really matter? Otherwise, since this is a relatively small class, they would have just stayed with AW. Does that mean MK is the man, no. AW, the same answer, no. MK is getting a little love for one simple reason, he came out of no where in our recruiting at a time we needed a break, and then he got a boost in ratings. I don't take this as a knock on AW at all, but a pat on the back for our staff, and a little boost for a young man that no major school wanted up until a few weeks ago.

Anyone know why our recruiting committs on this forum are missing Miller, Arciniego, Kelly, Burton and Kirkland after being updated? Not reading into anything, just wondering.

The point was simply that noone knows how good someone is until they play. If Cam was a 4 star, that's fine. I got the notion that it wasn't a forgone conclusion he would be named the starter from all of the SEC sports talk I'm constantly inundated with where I live. That still means there were 5 stars that he ended up better than. I'm not suggesting our recruits are that good, just that noone really knows yet how good they are. Don't get your panties in a wad

Never expected this much activity and results but here we are. With just 8 days left, 1 weekend and just 2-4 slots left (depending on our softies) here we are. So, who would you all like to close our class?

I still say it ain't over till the fat lady sings...

Still say we have a shot at Gus, but if not, lets keep Brown! Then Moore, Thomas, Smith and or Hunter!

Either way, remarkable job by Coach Shafer and his Team!
Another reason that I'm excited about this outstanding class thus far is tha with the exceptioin of STs every position is covered as far as I can see. Both sides of the ball:E

My panties aren't in a wad ... you spoke about something and presented items as fact that aren't ... I live right outside Atlanta ... its really not hard to either find these things out or ask someone in the know if you truly are in SEC country. How can you cite something as an example when it a.) is false to begin with and b.) has no bearing on what you are trying to compare?

You truly don't know how good a guy is but lets not paint Newton and Maziel as rags to riches story ... it isn't like they were recruited with little fanfare ... its a guy like Nassib who was much further down in the QB ratings that during his senior year compared to a guy like Cecil Howard who was a Big 33 4 star athlete and their respective fates that would have better solidified your point. What amazes me is that you play off Newton's recruitment after the whole $200K incident with his father ... and I have no doubt someone from Auburn paid that money ... they knew he was going to start before he even set foot on campus.

Scary thought...that would put him in Lindsey territory.

Thought @brownmalik99 looked bulked up when I saw him Monday RT @mattyports Dwyer DE Malik Brown was 6-3 225 pounds last yr. He's up to 251.

According to a Porter tweet from yesterday Malik was very impressed by TN and is still trying to decide between TN and NCST for his last visit.

With the loss of Carter, Spearman jumps near the top of my wishlist along with Laray and/or Gus, and Simeon Thomas.
Anyone else who is kept (Malik Brown) or jumps on board (another OL or Singleton) and there is room for them, then that would be great, too.
We have to find a way to hold on to Edwards and Brown. They are both future all conference type players.

I love Spearman. His tape is really really impressive. To me, he is the most important player of all the newbies that have popped up. He looks like a future NFL player.

Like that Poet Thomas kid a lot too.

Ok, Newton was a bad example. Manziel wasn't. Maybe your friends at Auburn knew Cam was going to start before he got on campus. The local sports talk guys in Knoxville were surprised he was as good as he was. Was everyone nationally expecting him to be a heisman contender? Was he the highest ranked quarterback in his class coming out of highschool (scout had him the 14th)? How about Manziel? He was a three star and ranked 22. Did anyone have him winning the heisman as a redshirt freshman? Take a little more time to understand what I was saying instead just picking apart what was a bad example. The other example was just fine. The point I was making in my original post was that noone knows how good our QB recruits are going to be until they get on campus and play. Many of us see rankings and assume ZA was going to better than anyone we have coming in. That may be true, but it may not be true. As someone else said, it's a crapshoot.

If he comes in anywhere close to 250 and maintains the burst he had in his tape at 220, I would not be surprised to see him get some 3rd down snaps as a freshman. This is the HS recruit on the D side of the ball I have been most excited about for awhile.

Do we have a Safety/WR recruit we're chasing from Quebec?

Saw this come across twitterverse...

Alix vandal@AlixVandal
@cyndube About a roadtrip to syracuse with ur fav WR / safety ?! #wouldbefun

Doubtful.

As the resident board Canadian, (are there others among us?) I would be quite surprised to find out that there is a legit D1 WR/DB playing Quebec Cegep (post-grad) right now. They churn out some D1 linemen and the occasional LB but those names are usually fairly well known within the Canadian football circuit — eh.
