That's right. And Gross had just been hired, too, right?
yep and gross was hesitant to make a move so soon in his tenure.

Didn't Floyd have something to do with it, too? I recall a story about a box of bigwigs being so embarrassed at that 50 blowout in the bowl game, whichever one it was.
His time had passed, though.
That’s what you said then and you $$$till don’t get it dude!!!Georgia Tech 51-14 Syracuse (Dec 21, 2004) Game Recap - ESPN
Expert recap and game analysis of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Syracuse Orange NCAAF game from December 21, 2004 on ESPN.www.espn.com
The program and P needed change after the 2004 season. The problem was Gross/Cantor didn't give P the respect he deserved. They lied to his face. The BC win was great but the Temple loss the previous week made it a game that cost us a BCS bid.
P deserves to be indicted into the SU HOF and since we don't have a ring of honor I don't know what more can be done but he deserves to be brought back for a game and honored if he isn't working next year.
P was told before the Champs Sports bowl game he was remaining the HC. Gross went on the ESPN broadcast with Tirico, Herbstreit, and Corso. After Gross left the booth in the second quarter Corso said to Tirico that Coach P was in big trouble.
He was fired the end of the following week.

My phone autocorrected inducted into indicted.Even during P’s worst what-the-duck losses in his declining years, I never felt he deserved to be indicted.
Replaced? That’s different.
My phone autocorrected inducted into indicted.
Dumb autocorrect but that is my own fault. I mean P is a SU HOFer.
Wow - Revered? Maybe the guy with the national championship was better??? Geez. He was a solid - not great - coach and a very good man.Maybe he was driven out by gross but there is no denying the fan base was part of that, including many on here. He should be revered at SU, he was the best coach at SU ever except, maybe Ben S. And that is only because of the NC. Coach Mac was a better personality, but coach P won consistently for over 10 years.
I would 100% love to see that. He was ran out of town by gross and should have been given a bit of respect that he earned
should have been someone saying the same thing about her (and not him)they is cantor. She made the decision. There are posters here who were with her when she gave the direction to gross. Her words to gross during the game were something like get rid of him, he’s embarrassing us.
true he did under perform with some excellent talent at times. he was very good coach not great. he is an excellent individual as far as could tell based on his public persona and the orgeron story.I mean his under .500 record over his last 3 seasons didnt help...
I'm not playing the revisionist history game just because the guy after him was a disaster. Robinson took us unto the express lane to crapdom, but P started the car in his final years. The mistake was the choice not the change. P was a very good coach who brought us to very good places. He underperformed with national championship level talent. He deserved to be here as long as he was, but once he had 3 under .500 seasons in a row after having NEVER had one before that, it was time to move on. His next two seasons were 5-7 for UConn. The college game, simply, had passed him by.
All that being said...he should be honored. He was a very good coach for a very long time, and from what I understand a great person as well.
As many things as people want to blame TGD for (and there are definitely things he did wrong), this one can't be laid at his doorstep. He took the job literally 4 days prior to P's firing and was following his new boss' orders.true he did under perform with some excellent talent at times. he was very good coach not great. he is an excellent individual as far as could tell based on his public persona and the orgeron story.
as far as his last 3 yrs----i give a pass. that is all on the chancellor, board of whatever, gross as well as jake for not investing in the program facilities etc etc. p did not start the car, be drove the car that the university gave him. he got the same deja vu all over again that happened to ben at the end of his career as a result of a lack of investment. su is never proactive they wait until disaster strikes then take some action.
stephanie miner was allowed tom put a nail in the coffin . her unbridled ego helped put the city and university back decades. most of us know that su needed that state money but that is another story.

The We One as Bees said made the call. She was a total disaster at everything she touched.yep and gross was hesitant to make a move so soon in his tenure.
Correct.I mean his under .500 record over his last 3 seasons didnt help...
Also correct.he had one losing season in 14 years
I don’t disagree. PP also had loyalty to assistants who had had the game pass them by. He won 10 games with Troy Nunes and RJ Anderson! 10!!! Sorry but we can’t overstate the talent at the end either.Three things ultimately led to P’s demise at SU:
1) Brutal losses to Rutgers in 2003 and Temple in 2004. Bad losses happen, but those were incredibly ill timed. Beat that horrific Temple team and we just take a beating in the Fiesta Bowl against Utah. No biggee. P would’ve been around in 2005 had that happened.
2) Losing out on Michael Vick. I sincerely think we contend for a national title in 2000 if we had Vick. The utter inability to adequately replace McNabb for years was a killer.
3) Being a loyal employee and not publicly raising the issue of poor facilities. P was (and is) a admirable guy, but in this case he needed to be selfish and call attention to Buzz’s malfeasance.
So you are saying he lost his recruiting chops too then?I don’t disagree. PP also had loyalty to assistants who had had the game pass them by. He won 10 games with Troy Nunes and RJ Anderson! 10!!! Sorry but we can’t overstate the talent at the end either.
For QBs yes. The whiff on Vick was crushing. So you are saying he lost his recruiting chops too then?

I think if we give him a pass on the last three years we need to also consider that his 2 most successful seasons were with teams that were handed to him stocked with young talent and ready to go.true he did under perform with some excellent talent at times. he was very good coach not great. he is an excellent individual as far as could tell based on his public persona and the orgeron story.

And if Vick is on our team, his helmet doesn't rupture Freeney's spleen in 2000.Wasn't he rumored to be in the running for the ND head coach job at one point?
If we land Vick, I have no doubt we are contenders in both years Vick plays. Can you imagine him on O and Freeney on D?
