Coach P Stepping Away from the NFL

I don’t disagree. PP also had loyalty to assistants who had had the game pass them by. He won 10 games with Troy Nunes and RJ Anderson! 10!!! Sorry but we can’t overstate the talent at the end either.

That 10-win, 2001 season was a testament to the most disruptive college defensive player I have ever seen: Dwight Freeney. The entire offensive recipe was to hand the ball to Mungro, don't turn the ball over, and get the hell out of the way of the D. I mean, we threw 10 TD passes all season!

as far as his last 3 yrs----i give a pass. that is all on the chancellor, board of whatever, gross as well as jake for not investing in the program facilities etc etc. p did not start the car, be drove the car that the university gave him.

Poor facilities had nothing to do with losing to Rutgers in 2003 and Temple in 2004. Those were historically awful losses, and ultimately are what cost P his job in '04. I mean, beat Rutgers in '03 and we eek into a minor bowl. Beat Temple in '04 and we make the BCS. There is zero chance P is fired if we make the Fiesta Bowl in '04. Less than zero.

Poor facilities played a role in the program's slippage, but you can't give a pass for those losses.

It's only January and we're already full force into the obligatory Coach P and Marrone threads. What are we going to do the rest of the offseason?

Honestly, this is more enjoyable than rehashing what happened in 2019 and the mediocrity of our recruiting. ;)

Three things ultimately led to P’s demise at SU:

1) Brutal losses to Rutgers in 2003 and Temple in 2004. Bad losses happen, but those were incredibly ill timed. Beat that horrific Temple team and we just take a beating in the Fiesta Bowl against Utah. No biggee. P would’ve been around in 2005 had that happened.

2) Losing out on Michael Vick. I sincerely think we contend for a national title in 2000 if we had Vick. The utter inability to adequately replace McNabb for years was a killer.

3) Being a loyal employee and not publicly raising the issue of poor facilities. P was (and is) a admirable guy, but in this case he needed to be selfish and call attention to Buzz’s malfeasance.
Sometimes being selfish isn't being selfish. Had he been able to exert some influence, improve facilities, and maintain success, the university makes more money in the long run, assistant coaches have better job stability, and the university enhances its profile as sports become higher and higher profile.

Complain about the new DC and the rest of the recruiting class?

And averaged fewer yards per game than our opponents.

Right. We had the wind against us all 4 quarters...

Ah yes, what a bizarre day of weather that was!

That Rutgers team had wins against Buffalo (1-11), Army (0-13), Navy (a Charmin soft 8-5) and Temple (0-11).

But, 'twas the ill wind that ruined that day for SU. ;)

There you go, quoting things again... :D

You can’t contend for a national title if you can’t even go 3-0, so that one is a no go for P.

Yup. This is exactly why Mike Vick was the biggest recruiting loss in the history of our program. With Vick AND Freeney they may have been good enough to win a national title that year.

If only Vick had known.

In 2001 we would've beaten Georgia Tech. Week 2 at Tennessee would've been the big hurdle. Then of course Miami and the Zebras in week 11. Had we gotten through the season with only the 1 loss we may have gotten the bid. Nebraska played in the title game with 1 loss that year.

The final BCS standings were Miami 12-0, Nebraska 11-2 (played for the title at 11-1), Colorado #3 at 10-2, Oregon 10-1, Florida 9-2 and Tennessee 10-2. Syracuse finished ranked 14th that year.

they is cantor. She made the decision. There are posters here who were with her when she gave the direction to gross. Her words to gross during the game were something like get rid of him, he’s embarrassing us.

Ironic considering Cantor was a far greater embarrassment.

Has there been any plans to remove the 4 slabs of concrete she poisoned the crouse college hill with in her own honor?

I'm saying 2000 because I'm not sure Vick would have made it to his junior year at SU, since he didn't at VaTech. Plus, the 2000 path was far easier than 2001. OOC games were Buffalo, Cincy, ECU and BYU (at home). Big East schedule had us home against VaTech (who, of course, would have been Vick-less) and Miami. It was all right there for the taking. And we had sophomore Troy Nunes and freshman RJ Anderson at QB. Sigh.

yeah you're right. 2000 was the year.

To me, 2000 was the year that letting Vick get away (or not prying him from the evil clutches of his mother and Virginia high school coaches) haunts us in a what-could-have-been kind of way.

The year that I think we squandered with the players we had was 1997. The NC State loss at home might have been the worst I ever witnessed, in terms of destroying a promising season. Then we blew a game against a bad Oklahoma team, and lost to a mediocre VaTech. '97 team was loaded on both sides of the ball.

Crappy facilities were only part of the lack of funding problem.

The program had a revolving door of assistant coaches during P's last 3-5 years and it hurt considerably.

P & D were old school grinders and it's difficult to retain assistant coaches being paid peanuts to sleep on couches in Manley.

I love these trips down memory lane.

Cantor was essentially sitting in my lap in the first half (thank you cto). My hand to God, when she turned to me and complained about what she was seeing on the field, I said not a word.

She then asked me why my lip was bleeding (ok that part I made up, but not the previous paragraph).

It was a magical night in the land of Disney.
