Coach Search Options after Autry

If you want to see a bidding war between SU and Ohio State or LSU, you're going to be disappointed... but there are a lot more great candidates than there are B1G and $EC openings.
To your second point, and I'm not asking for specifics, but generally speaking...who? The reason Schertz, Skinn, Hodgson are the most prominent candidates as mid-major coaches is that there aren't high-major coaches that would look at Cuse seriously.

I would be very shocked if we pulled a sitting high-major coach. I'm sure the BoT wants a high-profile, best candidate possible, but consider me skeptical based on the info out there on candidates so far.

Me too; If you mean P5, I don't think anyone has suggested that.

Established, winning, experienced HC with recruiting ties at a mid-major/G6 school that could scale rapidly at SU is my expectation.

This makes me think of guys like Thad Matta and Travis Steele, maybe Richard Pitino although he’s not having the best year this season.

Hodgson reminds me more of Fran Brown than anyone else and that’s a good thing

Had a tough childhood, started from the bottom, worked hard for everything he got, has recruiting chops, and truly wants the job.

Perfect recipe to shake things up

Buyout is affordable?

I believe Hodgson took the job with the possibility of SU opening in the back of his mind. I think that’s part of the reason he didn’t take UNLV.

Thad Matta who is on retirement watch, and Travis Steele who flamed out in his only P5 gig? Let's hope not.
Again, those were just the first names that popped into my mind based on the post. Who else fits the description? Eric Olen at New Mexico? Shaheen Holloway?

Makes sense, appreciate the clarity. Who beyond the "big 3" Schertz, Skinn, BH, fits that criteria, I'm not sure. But consider me intrigued!

Don't be shocked if there are 1 or 2 coaches at a P5 school that move this offseason that surprise people.

Coaches today are looking for a better opportunity to win (ie more $ funds available for players than their current team).

Yeah, Shaheen is the only name that makes sense to me based on that description - that's why I'm having trouble following this thesis to begin with.

Hah. I got this reference. Fair point. But also to be fair theyre pretty upfront saying it takes decades.

Gotta start somewhere. Jobs are jobs even if it’s 2030-2035. I doubt the salt potato market is going to rebound in CNY anytime soon.
things come in waves.
Moved south for more laid back and more greenery compared with NJ.
Now my highway looks like cement jungle and they're tearing down thousands and thousands of trees.

Which is great, but I'll be honest, it's a very very close call to me between Hodgson and Schertz. Like even if Schertz is a realistic get, Hodgson may actually end up being the better option anyway for Syracuse.

Here is my thing with Schertz. As a coach right now I think he’s ahead of anyone else that would be a reasonable option for us. Doesn’t mean someone like Hodgson can’t be as good or better.

Schertz is 50 and I would suspect based on what’s been said, we would be chasing him along with others and thus that could mean a lower buyout to give him flexibility may be something that has to be on the table along with the fact he could then give us a few strong years and along comes UK, after being tired of not chasing titles a couple more years who offer him an SEC level pay and NIL he could ride out his career with. That’s the biggest worry I have with him. Hodgson is up and coming it seems he wants the job and while he’s got more to learn, if he works out great like even Danny Hurley great, he’s unlikely to be going anywhere else in a hurry.

So when do we begin the interviews for our best candidates?
We certainly want our coach on board with enough time to target unsigned High School talent and transfers!

I doubt Olen is leaving the west coast everything I see on him seems to be locked on Arizona State. I think he might be the best coach on the market.

I am 99.99 percent sure we have already begun the process of reaching out via back channels, talked with some agents, and have had some unofficial conversations with some candidates. If not then we are way behind the game and the times.

Agreed, I would be completely stunned if we had not been reaching out at least through agents gauging interest and availability. You need to be prepared with plans.

I should have said, the on campus interviews, I agree that the early reaching out to coaches and their reps is underway!

Mid to late March, after Autry is officially dismissed. Possibly very quickly after if they get their ducks in a row now.

  • March 10th / 11th -- Syracuse loses in the first or second round of the ACCT
  • March 12th -- ADJW announces that Syracuse is moving in a different direction for a head coach
  • March 15th -- Our top candidate gets the job ***

*** delayed only if a team like USF makes a big postseason run, and BH bizarrely decides to run the string

SU will have their guy long before the hiring is officially announced. The timing of the hire and the public announcement of the hire will not coincide. Given that the guys they are interested in will be playing into March, those interviews that lead to the hire will most likely not be "on campus."

I'm not given (and don't ask for) specifics; I'm not cool enough for that, and at this point things probably shift rapidly. I just got a hint at the overall mindset. Best candidate... period. No disrespect to any alumni, but at this time I think that kind of answers itself unless something really unexpected happens.

SU knows that they are losing money and prestige bigly and that course-correcting is critical beyond just athletics.
Agreed. Nobody is getting bonus points because they have a Syracuse diploma.
