Coach Search Options after Autry

They aren't. Just something I thought of. Should the new A.D. be able to get his guy for an open job?

We need to hire the new basketball coach in 3/4 weeks, so if the new AD wants his guy, then they need to be officially hired before that to be involved. We can't wait, or next year is a lost yea,r right? So the new AD maybe a formality just like Red being let go but that all needs to come out and be official espcially if the new AD wants his stamp on the hire.

I think today is fine to do it. Only 3 games left 2 on the road. Have an assistant on the bench with HC experience. Just pull the cord everyone, even the national media knows it is coming now.

BH or bust for the sounds of it...
I've said all along that after today's game, its perfect timing. One week until the next game. And the next two are on the road. Two weeks until our only home game. And thats it. Most likely one and done in the ACCT.

Thanks. The original message was confusing in how it was worded. I’ve heard some things as well and think we’ll be happy with who we get, even if it’s not the top name we would have gotten 10 years ago.
That tracks with what I heard last week. Granted, things are really fluid with situations like this but the overall strategy and mindset seemed to be solid. I will say that different people are definitely sharing different things, and some of it is outright (manure).

I'll comment a little bit more on that last note after the hire is made.

And there’s some conversation that Gmac would decline the job if offered. Imagine that. But that’s the talk right now.
Gerry might also have the self awareness to know that he's not quite ready to take on a gig like this just yet. He's going through some pretty significant adversity being somewhat shorthanded at Siena, and I'm sure he's learning a ton.

It’s not that. He isn’t certain the athletic department will provide the necessary tools and resources to win. Gerry is VERY outspoken (not in a bad way) about what is needed to win and with all the shuffling around that’s occurring, he’s not confident and a believer at this time in cuse

Hodgson..

- Right hand man to Oats at UB. Turns them into top 25 team (which will never happen again) and beat an ok cuse team at Dome
- Goes to Alabama, turns a football school into a consistent basketball force. Known as “the shark” for his recruiting abilities.
- Leaves for Arkansas State, turns that program around, runs into a buzz saw that is James Madison (who beat Wisconsin in NCAA). Arkansas State was rolling probably would’ve won Sun Belt any other year. Next year there they win the regular season.
- Leaves for USF. Inherits sub .500 team whose coach unfortunately passed away a year prior. Immediately is now leading AAC (which is probably the second or third best mid major conference in the country)

Buffalo guy who understands the upstate ny culture when it comes to syracuse basketball. Is he not a perfect compromise for the people who want to keep it in the ‘cuse family. What am I missing?

If Schertz comes here and turns this thing around, he will leave for a blue blood. Hodgson feels like the guy that would stay here forever.
Thats a great post and makes a lot of sense.

The program had no idea what it was doing 3 years ago. Red may not be a good coach, but he helped modernize the program.

I think that's a nice take on his legacy. He was our "training wheels" coach for the birth of the NIL era.
We have a GM now, analytics people, a bunch of improvements.
We lack tactical acumen.

Whether he goes to the A10 or the American next will be very telling on the path he wants to go on. Will be shocked if he is in the power conferences from Siena, but you never know. Gerry may want to coach at a place that is all basketball. When he played at Syracuse, we had football, but we weren’t serious about it at all. We are now.

Gerry could become the Mark Few of that conference if he stayed long enough. But Gerry also thinks very very very high of his own coaching abilities and thinks he deserves a big time job, even right now. However, if you watched last nights game, you realize he still has a long way to go…

I also assume he is still annoyed that he was passed on three years ago.
Annoyed, but perhaps now he can see it as we did him a solid. He was way too young to risk his career like that. Scheyer was set up significantly better.

Who thought we were a coveted HC gig? That ship sailed long ago while people were making inane arguments for JB.

We allowed JB to drive the bus into a ditch… and then light it on fire…then we were lied to about having to hire Red.

Get Hodgson. It’s miles better than where are now.

While that is true, we are the ACC team for the northeast, with Maryland gone to the B1G and BC irrelevant.

Just like Fran recognized where our recruiting territory is, we can get top players from New England to Virginia.

There are so many good players in our territory, just like there are so many HS football players in the southeast and in Texas.

We have a great facility. We play in a P4/5 league. We have a very competitive athletic budget. We have quite an alumni network along the East Coast.

Hodgson may be the best choice.

My #1 choice is (a) somebody who is a competent game day coach, (b) a better teacher than Autry, (c) someone who requires players to compete hard.

Can't hire a coach before we hire an AD.

I’ll take the guy who IS confident and a believer that he can win and will do whatever it takes for that to happen. Love Gerry as a player, but I’ll take my chances with the guy whose nickname is the Shark.

I think the A 10 is a better choice for his next job, like at one of the Philly schools. There are a couple other possibilities, but that would be what I would suggest, if I was advising him on his career.

Yes it does. But I think Autry’s biggest downfall is not being able to get the players to do it all the time. That is arguably the biggest job of a coach in my opinion

Absolutely true. Totally agree.

The no timeout at the end of regulation, I saw. I’m high on Gerry long term. Perhaps he sees Siena being built up to a bigger stage. They do play in the arena in Albany. But yeah I’m rooting for Gerry, even if we get to a point that he is coaching at another program at our level and having better success than us. At that point, hopefully we can get Gerry to come home. Long way to go to worry about that lol. Incoming surprise Siena run to the Elite 8 after winning the MAAC.

I know this is probably meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but unless they get some players back and reintegrate them quickly, they just don't have the horses.

love this…. BUT… i’m really not confidant if you turn ‘Cuse around to the point a blue blood (maybe 3-5 schools) want you that you leave.

If you are so good that those schools are calling your name that probably means syracuse was a consistent elite 8 final 4 team contender for 2-4 years.

Im not so sure a coach would leave what we know Syracuse basketball is when we are good. but that’s a biased opinion.

Sounds like an FU move after not getting the job 3 years ago more than anything. Gmac has enough pull to get what he thinks he needs from the AD.
