Coach Search Options after Autry

Murray is a great ass't coach and a great offensive mind. I think he will probably be a
good head coach. But he needs to learn somewhere else. We need a proven head coach that
can do the job day 1.

I also think we need someone who has had successful head coaching experience but I would prefer Murray over someone connected to Syracuse.

If you're going the assistant route (which I hope we don't, unless the alternative is Hop), Murray seems to make the most sense.
Why? You basically have 4 options: ahc from a high performing team, HC from a MM or lower, former HC retread or internal…category 1 is a must have from a candidate pool perspective

Run practices?

Honestly, I think that's about all he does. I even think the "recruiting" credit is somewhat overrated.
But what leads us to believe he runs above average practices? His players haven't improved. There are times I still yell at the TV do you guys' practice?

At the end of the day we’re not winning squat unless we maintain and continue improving our NIL and Donor situation.

It should not shock anyone that Hop is a candidate when considering this.

We can ask ourselves and scream at the powers that be “Whats more important? Raising money or a guy who’s proven he can actually coach”.

If you ask our hall of fame Coach, who still has one of the greatest coaching minds in all of college sports, whats more important - JB would say moneys more important when giving yourself a chance to win in the modern current CBB game.

That’s why you can’t pick G Mac. That’s why regardless of fantastic points that Hop should already be disqualified, he’s being considered.

Money immediately makes you competitive. Much quicker than a good coach taking the time to rebuild in a game where players dont stay 4 years and freshman can’t match up vs 5th year transfers.

BH should be the favorite. But I’m not shocked Hopkins is garnering a serious look.

You don't know if he can handle being a head man. Some guys are good assistants (as we've seen from Hop/Red), but not able to be the Head Man. He might end up being very good, just think it's a bogger gamble than a guy who has already done it, even on a lower level.

Hoppers biggest issue as a coach is he is a players coach. He doesn’t have a bad bone in his body and consummate nice guy. When JB would ride players out Mike was the guy reeling them back. He develops a loyalty that is unmatched (Red is similar). His biggest need would be a hard ass on the bench. Ultimately why he’s probably suited for the NBA

There is a limit to that though, right? If my Saudi Prince said I will give 100 million to your Nil but I want 70 year old dasher coaching the team? The BOT would have to say no. Money is the life blood but you still need a proven coach.

HCs at MMs have issues too. I’d take a Tommy Lloyd in a heartbeat.

I disagree. His teams played hard and were decent to good defensively. They did not run any semblance of a good offense and he brought in ZERO shooting.

Agree that nothing is absolute. Izzo is another guy that comes to mind as an assistant that did well. I just feel that very successful Mid-major HC's have a higher batting average than career assistants.

They players we brought in this year were solid by the experts. I guess that credit may be given mostly to Kline now?
They still have to be coached. And he brought in two shooters who played the same position. Betsey and Kingz. We have three guards and none of them can be counted on to make a 3 if we need it. Or even if we don't.

They really shouldn't though. A different program would have had Kingz as an off guard. People were warned about bringing JJ back last year and we were scoffed at.

I’m just talking about the pool of candidates not favoring one over the other. They will talk to or kick tires on more than one AHC. There has to be mutual interest too…

You and I would think so but I don’t think the board does. They’re still playing catch up figuring out how to fundraise for sports. We’re decades behind other schools when it comes to asking people for money towards sports rather than just the school. I think moneys on a higher pedestal than it otherwise would be. Thats my understanding from what I’ve listened to from people in the program and associated with the program
