Coach Search Options after Autry

Read this post from richmondcuse. If you don't realize that it's a different world than it was 30 or 40 years ago, then I'm not sure you're using the critical thinking skills I would expect from a Newhouse grad, to be blunt.

someone said dead end job. I gave 5-7 examples of it not being. It’s a better job than no job (Hopkins) and better than Siena (GMAC). That’s my point.

Not sure why that’s a crazy hot take. Yes they aren’t in the same league as SU.

Just a random observation. Hodgson’s back story (upbringing etc), the offensive pace/intensity they play, that super funky - sticky zone he showed the other night (which actually impressed me more than his offense), and his kinda sorta cocky attitude, all combined reminds a lot of Tarkanian in his heyday.
Can you imagine Tark coaching in this era?! He'd be in the Final Four literally every year. There was never a better combination of coaching acumen and dirty behavior (for the times).

Or 1980s cuse…

I don’t know who SU will pick, I pray it the right guy. I went to games and has season tickets for over 50 years. Still go to a couple games each year but don’t get around that well any more. When I could no longer go regularly, I watched on TV with a snack and a couple of beers (both hoops and football), and a cigar. Since SU has fallen on hard times, now it’s a fifth of whiskey (before the games and two packs of luckies.) Tough on a 80 year old. If the don’t pick it up in hoops and football, I’ll never make it to 90.

If you're knocking down a 5th of whiskey and 2 packs of Lucky's some mediocre sports will bounce right off you!

It's probably the definition of "dead end" that's in dispute. I take that to mean a school where (a) it's extremely hard to win at, and (b) there's little track record of anyone moving on from there to greater success somewhere else (within the past 20-30 years!).

BC hasn't made the tourney since 2009. They guy that had success, Al Skinner, went on to flame out spectacularly at Kennesaw State.

Since then every coach has been a failure both at BC and in their next gig (Donahue at Penn, Christian at Canisius, Grant).

Obviously it's a better gig for Hop than being in low-impact roles with NBA teams. But BC seems to definitionally be "dead end".

He definitely wins and is a good coach, but his on court persona might rub some people the wrong way. Though I personally don't care, wins are all that matters at this point.
If being a great coach but having a “bad” on court persona rubs people the wrong way, then sign me up. Some of the best coaches (Boeheim, Hurley, Knight - not counting off the court stuff for him, etc) are that way. Am I saying Leone is that caliber of a coach? No, but it’s a characteristic a lot of great coaches have.

Don’t they call him the “Shark” on the recruiting trail?
Yes they do. It’s great that he can recruit, but seeing that he can also actually coach is the most important thing. I’m hoping Syracuse doesn’t mess up and just makes the clear and obvious correct call in hiring BH (I’m also hoping they don’t screw up the AD hire either).

I wonder if somebody like Chris Mack could also be a sneaky option. Success at Xavier, had an okay stint at Louisville before getting canned, and is having some good success at Charleston. Maybe he’s still tied with some UofL donors?
I've mentioned him a few times. He's had a lot of success, but Cuse administration is probably too woke for him. And some might not want Hodgson if he comes off too brash.

But, I'll say it for the 100th time, successful coaches like Pitino, Calapari, Oats, Hurley, Boeheim, Coach K, yada, yada, yada are all a bit grizzled.

I think Hop or GMAC will be considered is my point if if if it opens up. I was told it’s not definite it will (which i find crazy).

Also Gatto who should get a look at Syracuse too. Great HC in Massachusetts.

This program is starting to remind me of my Jets

Ny Jets GIF by Respective
I just threw up in my mouth

Agree, believe the university does not care about the fan base. Only that they buy tix. Syracuse fan base is students, alum’s but mostly those that show up to games are blue collar workers and just locals in general. The make up of the crowds has changed in recent years, but a larger portion of the fans are fans of the team, local team.
I just heard there has to be an opening in order to hire a coach. Buy out too big. I don’t believe this, but just heard it. Any one else heard this????
Once you’re a fan
You’re a fan all the way
From the first game you see
Til your last dying day!

BC should definitely consider them and Hop should grab that job with both hands if they offered it. GMac I'm not so sure.

Jason Hart on that short list as well…
He was my pick to replace JB if we had the desire to have an alum as HC. Way more qualified than Red at that time.

There’s still an element of risk with Hart, but I would prefer him over Hop or GMac

Pretty solid comp I really like that.

Does the .270 winning percentage in the G League over 6 seasons concern you?

The only issue is that works until it doesn't. He's had very few "down" years, but refs have got a bit tired of him in the SUNYAC. Again, not that I have an issue with any of it, this program needs more of a culture shock the opposite direction of the current staff.

If it's Hopkins the message I get is that this school cares more about certain people's feelings than winning and I will spend my time on other things than supporting such an unserious organization.

Would love to Hodgson coach Cuse against Hurley and UConn in the garden. That would be fun.
That would be so much fun. I would imagine we will be playing some different opponents than we are used to. Like Alabama may be on the schedule regardless of the SEC/ACC challenge. Also expect a tougher schedule out of conference with Hodgson.

was shocked to hear Pat in Syracuse AND Vito in N. Syr call into Tim Leonard’s show backing Hopkins. I get that everyone likes Hop, but his track record as a HC is terrible…
Pat was on the Hopkins train 10 years ago, he would call into AER on the post game show after losses and complain about how JB should’ve retired and given the reins to Hopkins. He’s definitely a Hopkins Stan
