Coach Search Options after Autry

One of the most perplexing things to me amidst all of what happened with Red still is the hiring of Engelstad.

As a former HC going to be an AC you are immediately intrigued not to mention he had two solid portal prospects who then both went to UGA which was a massive womp womp and you immediately wonder what is the point even then.

Beyond keeping Griff who is a best friend of Red and those kind of relationships often don’t workout well this hire still bewilders me. He’s been mostly a ghost publicly in his entire tenure here beyond being in social media posts and we’ve not seen one positive contribution as a fanbase.
The hiring of Engelstad should have been done after we got his PG as a condition…..terrible judgment. Maybe it’s me but why do we have AG, a PG coaching the BIGS?

Chesney had 14 years of head coaching experience when the Syracuse job opened up. Never understood how BC/Syracuse/UConn never grabbed him when he was available.
He was a finalist for our gig the last time and was likely the second choice. Fran just wowed everyone. Going into the process, a lot of folks thought chesney was the choice. I’ll be curious to see how he does out west.

Gmac currently has Siena at their 32nd best season by BBallRef's Simple Rating System. Last season he had their 40th best season.

At Arkansas St., Hodgson had their 2nd and 14th best season. At USF he has their best and 2nd is not particularly close (Seth Greenberg).

Look, I get people like Gerry and love that he's a former Orange player and coach who has had some success, but he's not even remotely close here.

I’m not in favor of hiring GMAC over Hodgson at all, but this is some random strange out of the way metric.

Hodgson is simply achieving at a higher level than GMAC right now. It’s an easier sell to the fan base in general.

He was not brought here for Leffew.
dash, if you are trying to protect red’s image you shouldn’t try to correct the false narrative in this case. The fact that there was no supposed “player deal” just makes the whole thing look more absurd.

The money he was offered to go to Georgia he could absolutely not turn down. And he STILL almost came here because of Dan.
I agree but he was brought here with the thinking we had a better chance of landing him. I don't think anyone in our camp thought the price tag would get as high as it did.

Former Oswego State coach Mike Deane was 166-77 there in the late 80's early 90's. He went from Siena to Marquette where he had some successful seasons.
True story , I played soccer for Oswego St early 80s Mike Deane used to come out and play in our scrimmages with us. I guess to keep in shape . He wasn’t bad . Nice guy as well .

You know, it does matter what type of situation a coach walks into.
Is the team mildly disappointing, very disappointing or a dumpster fire?
It takes an incredibly good coach to turn around a program that literally has nothing going for it and get them to the brink of their conferences championship only 2 years later.

Siena won 4 games the year before Gerry came. They were about as close to a dumpster fire as it gets.
Last place in their conference, hadn't been to a conference championship game in 9 years, hasn't been to the NCAAT in 16 years.

Got 14 wins in first year, 22 wins and still counting in second year.
That is one hell of an improvement, whether you are a fan of GMAC or not.
And he is doing it with literally 7 scholarship players for the last few weeks, 8 for a few weeks before that.

Hodgson took over 2 13 win teams, one just a year removed from a 25 win season.
You seem to have discounted SF's 25-8 season in 23-24. Why isn't that the best? BH only has 23 wins so far.
He did very well but he did not have to literally start from scratch at either place. There was something there that he could build on.

Listen I have no problem with hiring Hodgson, he has experience with taking over very disappointing teams and turning them around. I pray he can have another big turnaround season if we do indeed hire him.

I honestly think some people discount what Gerry has done because he was part of the Boeheim tree and thus must be tainted and unable to be a decent coach. God forbid we don't exorcise JB and his followers from the Dome before it is too late.

I want Gerry to stay at Siena for awhile longer to build on his legacy and resume.

Absolutely but don't we have a decent story to tell after what we spent last year? I still don't really understand where we are with NIL compared to other programs.
Another excuse for the Kleinomaniacs

I am not trying to protect Red in any way. This was no package deal. Red had known Dan for a long time. He thought very highly of him. If you thought otherwise, you were mistaken.

It’s not really. I mean, it’s on the front page and all of the league and team stats. Relative success is a lot more objective and interesting than people posting that Gerry had a great year and should be a high end HC. SRS is a simpler version of KenPom. You can use KenPom if you want. I don’t have access to their historical teams and I’m not building a spreadsheet to show something that’s intuitive.

Orange Nation callers for an hour straight were on Gerry and Siena. It got repetitive. They have moved from Hop to Gerry over the weekend. They clearly do not come to this board.
The hosts kept saying they think SU goes outside the family this round.

If he gets beat tomorrow, they will forget all about Gerry.
