Coach Search Options after Autry

Rumor I heard a few days ago was that Hopkins agent was negotiating a contract with su. All figures were in agreement minus the nil money he felt the school needed to guarantee to turn the program around. If this is true which this sources usually is then we maybe disappointed in the coaching hire. I doubt bh comes here if the nil funds are lacking. A good coach is not coming here to not be competitive and have every resource that’s needed.

On that note, I’m going to refrain from checking Syracusefan for the next week or so.

Doubt this is the case they will interview others first. After they term Autry they will then have contract discussions with the 1st choice post interviews. I am sure they have discussions with various people gauging interest, especially with guys who are attached to the program. We don’t even have a AD right now.

No I was told Hopkins. This happened a few weeks ago. Was told Hopkins hates his current position and is ready to be back in college but the university has to guarantee the number he felt was needed, they couldn’t.

In your first comment you say you heard a few days ago.

Now this comment you say you were told Hopkins a few weeks ago was talking nil #’s. Something doesn’t add up with your source I think but that’s just me.

What does make sense is that prob about 2 weeks ago there was a huge deluge of Hopkins chatter when he first threw his name in the ring. Seems like a lot of rumors started around then.

so we will have a good recruiting class and lose 70-7 against Notre Dame?

As someone who heard Hopkins from a source a few days ago (and certainly didn’t want to hear it) I really agree with this post. I think a lot of former basketball alumni/people currently within the program kinda feel Hopkins as their last chance per se. And it excited them to hear his name remotely in the conversation which led to some smoke blowing. I think that with a new AD coming in, JW and certainly the new AD, aren’t going to feel as obligated to make those people happy as much as one would think. I hope (and it sounds like from this board), that decision makers are starting to see that Hodgson clearly is what this program needs. As much as my source nearly made me faint hearing Hopkins, I think that it’s very strikingly similar to the Dan Mullen situation. That very first rumor like that oftentimes runs its course before hiring time.

Just my two cents, but there is def a Hopkins buzz within good sources which is scary.

My money is with Hodgson.

It's amazing to me that the basketball alumni can't see the likely potential of going down the same road as we did with Red. Are they afraid they can't wander around the Melo Center anymore? I would think a new outside hire would still see the importance of keeping the "Family Atmosphere." Hilarious that Hop is going to strongly negotiate his NIL or not come.

I think it’s like anything in life. It’s connections.

They hear Hopkins in the running and they love him (for good reasons he was an awesome associate here). Naturally, you root for that guy. If anyone here had a great connection with a candidate, you would be pulling for that guy.

I agree wholeheartedly that some basketball alumni don’t have necessarily the best interest of the program itself in mind. And it’s not entirely their fault, they are tainted by there positive experiences with the program.

It sometimes helps to have/know less in the sense that it makes you more logical. The decision makers need to realize that.

Basketball alumni and the cny bubble are extremely biased, connected, and knowledgeable about the past. People mistake that with logic or expertise about the future. When you’ve had a program be incoherently awful for nearly a decade, it’s time to rip off the band-aid.

Basketball alumni have already been wrong once, I hope (and feel confidently) that they won’t be allowed to be wrong twice.

Great points. I'm 100% onboard with the family atmosphere deal. As a former college athlete on a much smaller scale, I made great friends and had a great experience, but at some point you have to let it go. The disaster of last five years for sure speaks for itself.
