Five tournament appearances in his last ten years with a Final Four. Not bad for someone who "wrecked" the program. One losing season in 47 years. Only took Red three years to double that. But I guess that's Jim's fault, right?
You can’t ignore the Final Fours and Sweet 16s. I’ll give you that. JB was a great coach, and was still a very good tactician and in game coach until almost the end. But he allowed his offensive and defensive systems to become incredibly stale and stagnant, allowed recruiting to atrophy, never replaced Hop with a big time recruiter after he left, stopped putting in the required work with recruiting, and then built his last teams around his son being the star, which was foolish. Daddy ball didn’t work. He’s responsible for the mess that the program is in—even if he helped build us into a power. Red was a bad hire, but part of the reason we hired him was to give a shot to one of JB’s guys in order to ease him into retirement.

For reference of what the ceiling is with Hodgson and how you don’t need megabucks NIL to win big. You only need to be competive with NIL. Good coaching will take you a long way. That said, I don’t know if I trust these NIL figures. LSU is apparently not spending close to that, and I suspect a bunch of these are exaggerated. But Alabama is supposedly middle of the pack in the SEC with NIL.

Yet JB advocated for Gerry to take over not Red.
He truly believed that Gerry had the it factor to build a successful team.
So Red has one winning season, with Gerry, and 2 losing seasons without him.
Gerry moved on to Siena where he took a 4 win team to the MAAC title game tonight.
Seems to me JB knew who was the better head coach material.

Oats has 6 former top 50 HS players on his roster. They don't play any defense.

I wouldn't compare us to the SEC. I would compare us to the Big12. NIL budgets to that conference are very similar. That conference has better coaching.

The "candidate [X] demands [Y] NIL guarantee or he won't consider the job" stuff cracks me up.

SU is committed to funding the full $20.5 million allowed for school's to directly pay players. SU has committed 25% of that to men's hoops, a share that most Power 4 schools are also committing. SU is asking donors to fund that player compensation money.

Every dollar on top of that is NIL, and *that* is the responsibility of the incoming head coach. Now, he'll get loads of assistance in raising whatever NIL funds he needs. But that's on the HC to orchestrate.

Red did an exceedingly poor job of that in his first 2 years as HC. Whomever the new HC might be - Hodgson, Hopkins, McNamara, Zombie John Wooden - their responsibility is to get the total player compensation budget up to ~$10 million next year.

Loved GMac the player and glad he is doing well at Siena. That said this thread turning into a GMac bromance and rehashing JB/Red/GMac is about played out. People just keep saying the same stuff. I come to this thread for updates on Reds replacement. Talk about GMac in the Siena GMac thread. Its like on the football board when a coach is brought up, in 10 posts it turns into a Doug Marrone thread. Take the GMac stuff to the GMac thread.

I really feel strongly that the 10 mil mark does not matter, it's where we line up against our peer programs. We will never compete with Duke and UNC or Louisville in NIL ok whatever...

We have to compete with Virginia/SMU/Miami/NCState/Clemson in Basketball NIL though. We cannot fall below this cut line. We need to be in the mix with these teams. If UVA and Miami and SMU are spending 12 mil next year on a roster we need to as well. The actual dollar amount does not matter if we lose guys to VT or Wake or FSU or worse the west coast teams...

Agents talk and players do too. We cannot stay in a 3rd tier of NIL spending in the ACC, sure with coaching we will be in the tourney, but I don't want a HC that is cool with an 8-10 seed in the tourney every year. I want to compete at the top of the ACC which we have never done.

My work study job in 1978-80 was working for Nitardy in his office.
You got a few years on me. I played from 85 to 88. Looking back I thought Doc was old when he retired when in reality he was 57 or so. I'm older than that now. Crazy how we look at things when we are younger. When he retired he gave away a lot of old stuff (Jerseys) that he had in the storage room in back of his office. I'll run the campus when I'm in Oswego a few times a month. I can assure you that very little has changed at Laker since the day you left.

I wish Harvard would just go donornuts and field a $40M NIL team and scorch the field and win the championship.

Wonder if that would force a change.

NIL is disgusting on so many levels. Not seeing how it won't just get worse for the game.
I'm actually surprised that there aren't more billionaire alumni of the Ivy's demanding they go FBS. Truly take college football back 100+ years.

Am I reading this right - did you play ball at Oswego in the late 80s?

Agreed. That's why I threw up $10 million. That would have us, as of now, in the top third of ACC schools. We'll be fine as long as we're in the top third.

I've watched too much pro sports to not know that you don't have to be a market setter in spending. You simply need to be competitive enough and be smart about how you allocate your resources.

That's the job of the HC.

The day Boeheim's successor is likely fired, and we're rehashing how the end of JB's tenure transpired *again*

I wonder why so many fans want a fresh start...
If Hodgson (or someone outside the family) is the hire and doesn't get in the top 25 year one, the "keep it in the family" folks are going to be calling for his head. If it wasn't annoying already, it's just going to get worse.

If Hop is the hire all this NIL talk will. not. matter.

I don’t agree we will never compete financially with Duke, UNC, Louisville. An all cylinders firing top-25 Syracuse squad can absolutely compete. Donors just need to feel their money is not going to waste.
