Coach Search Options after Autry

STL has no shot
Gerry actually used Mulvey in a number of similar sets against Duke as well. You don’t have to use your 5 man to run that offense it’s more about the skillset than the position itself. He does a lot of different things with that offense.

Honestly you could easily plug Donnie into that role for example.
the fact that they used Kyle in that role and never Donnie was one of the more infuriating parts of the season for me.

Schertz might be the best offensive mind in college basketball. I love GMac but you must do your due diligence and try to get Schertz if possible. Fans would love Josh when the scoreboard hits triple digits multiple times a year.

Bring in Arteta. We can play haramball. I'm in.

Arteta played for Arsenal. He was with pep for what 3 years?

but it's not just 1 game. that was the icing on the cake. it's what he's done over the 2 years there. taking a 4 win team to 23 wins and the opportunity to play that duke game.

But if it wasn't Gerry, we wouldn't be looking at a candidate with his resume.

Takayo Siddle took over a UNW program that had four losing years in a row and had them 27-9 in year two winning the CBI, followed by 24-10, 21-10, 27-8 NCAAs and 27-6 this year in the NIT. Last year in the NCAAs they were within 3 of Texas Tech with 7 minutes left. He's been mentioned a couple times, but nobody seemed very excited.

Clint Sargent took over a Wright State team that had won 18 or fewer games in 3 of 4 years. Year two he's got them to 23-12, won the conference tourney, they made the dance and were down 3 to Virginia with 3 minutes left. Haven't seen him mentioned at all.

The attitude towards these guys, and rightly so, is that they've had an impressive start to their coaching careers but let them move up a level and do it there and then maybe they'd be worth consideration for the Syracuse job.

No one here called him a genius. But would it kill you to say he has done a great job at Siena? Because he has. A school on it's ass. Loses three starters. And still has the year they had? For me, I want to see what he can do without Doty before I give him the Syracuse job. But that doesn't mean that what he has done so far isn't very impressive.
Could say the same about Schertz and Avila…

Come on. It is still Siena against Indiana. Gerry won the league tournament and had his team prepared for Duke. See, this is what I can't stand. I am not in favor of Gerry but this need to demean what he has done in just two years at Siena I find odd. He took over a team that won 4 games and took the #1 team in the country to the end. Led with 5 minutes to go. He deserves a ton of credit. And for some reason, some of you guys look to pick it apart. Very Odd.
Not really. There are a lot of young recency biased fans go for the hot name (not that name) is not great but they are headline readers and don’t read the entire article. Shertz is gray and a great get, but Gmac is young thought and is showing signs of being very, very good. I’m a Gmac guy would be happy with Shertz but happier with Gmac. Same with best thing since sliced bread has one more year as HC than Gmac not a hundred. Sift through get the right guy. But he who hesitated is lost.

Gerry has done a really good job...but the mess that is college basketball now has turned everything into one year teams. Yes, they won only 4 two years ago, but with a new coach and an NIL infusion to the top of the MAAC they should improve rapidly. That "4 win team" argument is getting old. Hell, they had winning records the five years prior to the cratering, and the anti-Hodgson contingent kept claiming that it didn't matter that HE turned around a losing team in his first season at USF because they had a great winning season previous to that.

Anna Kendrick will be waiting for you when you get home.

As will your army of squirrels???

I’ve said he’s done a good job at Siena. I question whether he’s shown enough to make me comfortable with him at SU. Everyone seems to be saying the Duke game proves he is. I don’t believe one game proves anything, unless it’s the national championship game. Even then I’m not sure.

"Everyone seems to be saying" somethin that literally no one here is saying? Do we need 700 more pages before the reading comprehension improves here?

People are saying the Duke game provided additional evidence for him being a good coach, in addition to other metrics you can look at--as well as other benefits he may be uniquely qualified to bring. You can say that those things haven't convinced you, but don't be such a dull dunce that you have to misrepresent other people's positions.

There’s no point in arguing with that dude

I’m just fascinated by everyone taking the Duke game as such positive proof. Gerry coached against another P4 program, Indiana, who didn’t make the tournament. Indiana 81 - Siena 60. And that was with the guys who weren’t there for Duke. Hmmm.
Do a deep dive into why they lost that game.

First game after they lost their starting big man Tasman who was injured during the previous game Vermont that they also lost. Top rebounder and second highest scorer.
Required season ending knee surgery
Also had no Mulvey, I think it was the Vermont game he was concussed.

So no Tasman, no Mulvey and first game they inserted Chandler into the starting lineup.
The same Chandler who they lost 2 weeks from the end of the season.

Up till Vermont loss and player losses from that game, that team was on a roll.
Sorry if Gerry couldn’t adjust fast enough after 2 huge player losses to take it to Indiana on the road.

I have not seen a single person at any point in this thread say that Gerry is not a good coach. So no additional evidence was needed that he's a good coach. But Syracuse basketball should not be setting the bar at "good," and if they can get a guy with 18 years of successful head coaching experience at three programs, all of which points to him being great, they should take that over two years of good.

(And I think there's a good chance Gerry goes on to be a great coach.)

Question for those who have been in the room with Gerry. Does he have the gravitas to walk into a house and carry the day with a kid and his family?
Legit question. Think the answer to that is now yes. We’ve watched him mature over the past two years to be able to say that.
