Coach Search Options after Autry

It's the donors money, they can do with it whatever the hell they want to, including not donate it to SU and/or disagree with your viewpoint.

Fix it - get incredibly wealthy and then you can do whatever you want to with you money and someone else on a board can call you a moron.
Sure it’s their money and they can do what they want with it but it doesn’t make it any less stupid. If you care about supporting Syracuse athletics you should be supporting the best candidates possible not just your guys. Because if your guy doesn’t work pretty soon you’ll be funding a G5 team.

Well said. I generally don't think it's my place to make demands on how other people spend their disposable wealth. I particularly avoid insisting people spend their disposable wealth on things and in amounts I am not spending.

This thread was epic until about two hours ago when it got taken over by about ten posters who make new posts every two minutes screaming that the apocalypse is about to befall us if we hire GMAC.

My view is that GMAC with a lot of NIL has a really good chance of success, as does Schertz with somewhat less NIL. Schertz is certainly safer given his experience, but if our next coach is really, really successful, we probably hang onto GMAC and risk losing Schertz to a better job. I feel like we are in a pretty good spot either way.

You do realize that the majority of Schertz's head coaching experience is with bottom feeding conferences, yes? Some people will prefer that he has more years of experience as a head coach, even if he spent 13 years at DII Lincoln Memorial. Some people will prefer that Gerry was an assistant coach at the highest level, going to multiple Final Fours, etc.
If you’re gonna credit time as an assistant, Luke Murray is far more qualified.

Stop making sense. Really tho this is why NIL comes into play.

Gmac with a big bag and continued support or Schertz with a medium bag.

I’ll say this though. Duke, UNC, and Louisville are going to break the bank this year again.

We have to get a better roster than the rest of the ACC after them. I’ll get on board with either coach but the players better be legit.

Without a name, this is what our new coach actual accomplish.

YR 1 Finished 8th in a terrible MAAC conference with a 14-18 record 9-11 in conference
Y2 2 Finished 3rd in a terrible MAAC conference with a 23-12 record 13-7 in conference
-Won the conference tournament as 3 seed
-Lost in RD1 to Duke
-KenPom efficiency ratings - Offense ORtg ranked 193rd, Defense DRtg ranked 162nd

That is it as an actual look at his coaching history. Not looking at his playing days or anything. That is what we Syracuse a supposedly top 15-20 program in the nation. That is what we are hiring.

I have my doubts on.gmac being able to recruit. Lost a lot of recruiting battles here.

Don't forget his biggest attribute and that he's family.

Phil, put your stats away and remember that we wouldn’t have won 10 games without Gerry Mcnamara.

I asked ChatGPT about a list of coaches who had left the MAAC for other programs since 2010.

Since 2010, they noted the 4 following, in their own words as "True Step-up Exits"
- Fran McCaffery from Siena to Iowa
- Kevin Willard from Iona to Seton Hall
- Joe Mihalich from Niagara to Hofstra
- Rick Pitino from Iona to St. John's

Fran had 27-7 and 27-8 seasons before he left -- 3 straight titles, and a recent #9 seed and a win in the NCAA Tournament

Kevin Willard inherited an Iona team that went 2-28. By year 3, he had them up to 21-10... so a very similar path to GMAC, and he propelled that to a job at Seton Hall in 2011.

I am struggling to come up with other alternatives other than JS for this 2026 Syracuse team, because the topic of alternative coaches is not something I really digged into this year.

But being objective its a big jump that doesn't happen much., and it doesn't mean that GMac will fail... but its a big jump.

I’m just trying to temper my expectations so I don’t end up feeling disappointed. I’m not going to put my eggs in the “they’re going hire somebody awesome out of left field” basket. I’ll cheer for whoever gets hired, but as an SU fan, I’m trying to be realistic.

Again- I am only going by what has been put out there by legit sources
Which is what exactly? The only thing I’d go by as a legit source is what Pete Thamel has said, and that’s not a knock on anyone here. I know people are connected and appreciate everything they are willing to share. I just don’t think collectively we know as much about the current search as we think. Maybe I’m wrong.

Prepping myself for a surprise similar to the AD selection. Thus, a name I havent seen mentioned in this thread yet.

Schertz, BH, GMac, Martelli Jr, Skinn, Murray, K Young, Otz, Hopkins, Groce, Steele, Gallo, Olen, Langel, James Jones.

Is there ANY chance it is someone not listed? (I likely also missed a name or 3 that should be listed).
No chance. Besides a few people had mentioned the Toledo AD among the four interviewees.

im done GIF

I'll pick up here in the morning. These 24/7 coaching search threads are a young man's game. Try to keep it to 10 pages I have to catch up on.
