TJ Otzelberger is not leaving Iowa State. He’s not great resources there and is from the Midwest and they have had lots of recent basketball success. So is Schertz the move? Or would someone from a D1 school (ISU head coach) be a better hire?
I think that ship has sailed. He’s got an SEC program with loads of cash rolling. Why would he leave the warm weather and low taxes to come be cold again and never see the sun? I guess same would apply for Hodgson, but USF to Cuse is a jump whereas Bama to Cuse isn’t anymoreI always thought it was worth a shot. But he turned down Indiana this offseason and that was his dream job. I know this as a fact. He isn’t coming back to coach Syracuse after turning down his dream job a couple months ago.
Nate oats would cost some money. But I think he would leave Alabama for Syracuse.
Who wouldn't love ISU's coach. But while that would seem obvious, P4 -> P4 moves are rare, notwithstanding the fact Cuse should be viewed as a far more attractive job.So is Schertz the move? Or would someone from a D1 school (ISU head coach) be a better hire?
We can no longer afford Nate Oats. Don’t even mention Hodgson. He’s not the answer.I think that ship has sailed. He’s got an SEC program with loads of cash rolling. If you’re giving up on him because his USF team isn’t amazing this year I think that’s pre mature. Shaheen halloway had a bad first year at seton hall, and St. Louis was pretty mediocre in schertz first year I thinkWe can no longer afford Nate Oats. Don’t even mention Hodgson. He’s not the answer.
I read the article. I'm sold. Hire this guy!Interesting. I hadn’t heard that he turned down Louisville. That’s wild considering the amount of resources they have among their basketball boosters. Maybe he didn’t want to backtrack after having just taken the Saint Louis job. Here’s an Athletic story on Schertz from a couple of years ago (I wish I could share a gift article with the board, but they may allow a certain amount of free views). I’m gonna write a longer post on him at some point. Also, his name is simply pronounced “shirts” for those wondering. Lol.

How Indiana State basketball’s Josh Schertz rose from ‘anonymity’ to coaching star
Josh Schertz has Indiana State headed toward its best season since Larry Bird was a Sycamore. He took a unique path to this moment.www.nytimes.com
The fate of the program comes down to the next coach.I've been harsh on SU leadership, mostly because I've been forced to watch utter slop for so long and they have not made smart decisions or showed that they care about maintaining the old bball prestige.
But I'm starting to get the feeling they might surprise us this Spring and do better than expected with the next coach.
This feeling… are you never wrong?I've been harsh on SU leadership, mostly because I've been forced to watch utter slop for so long and they have not made smart decisions or showed that they care about maintaining the old bball prestige.

Schertz already coaches in division 1. Do you mean P5? He’s got Saint Louis up to #37 in KenPom now. As you see in my previous posts in this thread, he’s the guy I think they should target asap—and Wildhack should be sowing the seeds for it in the next couple of months. Btw, Schertz makes $2 million at Saint Louis already, more than Red makes at SU. So the donors and athletic department are gonna have to step up. I could see SLU trying to sign him to an extension mid-season to make it harder to other schools to poach him.
If you paid Otzelberger he would 100% leave Iowa state. Have you been to Ames? It’s a chit holeAnyone who thinks we are getting any successful current P4 coach like Oats or Otzelberger is out of their mind
Central NY isn’t exactly paradise. If you paid Otzelberger he would 100% leave Iowa state. Have you been to Ames? It’s a chit hole
Would be a dream scenario. But we rarely see P4 to P4 moves. My slight hope this offseason is that there were many high profile moves last year and so far it seems Cuse may be the highest profile to potentially make a move, and maybe by quite a margin. UNC has stabilized.. can't think of any other top tier program with a coach on the hotseat right now.If you paid Otzelberger he would 100% leave Iowa state. Have you been to Ames? It’s a chit hole
Honestly, quit that narrative. It is just nonsense. Depending on what you value, central NY is great.Central NY isn’t exactly paradise.
8 months of the year it is perfectly fine. The south is a swamp spithole 6 months of the year.Central NY isn’t exactly paradise.
And that’s where the problem is I don’t see us paying a coach 5-6 million. He’s already making 4 at ISU. Hey I’d love to be wrong thoughIf you paid Otzelberger he would 100% leave Iowa state. Have you been to Ames? It’s a chit hole
Like i said, have you been to Ames?Central NY isn’t exactly paradise.
Oh i dont disagree with the money issue I just think its silly that someone would think ISU is a more attractive job. You might get away paying a similar salary. I dont think itll take much to pry him away, that is if he even stays after this year. And that’s where the problem is I don’t see us paying a coach 5-6 million. He’s already making 4 at ISU. He's already rebuilt Iowa State and he was an assistant there from 2006-13 and 2015-16. He's from Wisconsin and his wife is from Iowa. Maybe he likes it there?Oh i dont disagree with the money issue I just think its silly that someone would think ISU is a more attractive job. You might get away paying a similar salary. Anything is possible I guess. He's already rebuilt Iowa State and he was an assistant there from 2006-13 and 2015-16. He's from Wisconsin and his wife is from Iowa. Maybe he likes it there?
compared to Ames I would say it kind of is, unless you have an affinity for CornCentral NY isn’t exactly paradise.
