Coach Search Options after Autry

Here is a question.

Ive heard that because of the Autry contract buyout, if a move is made this season it may diminish the caliber of coach we can afford next year.

IF you knew one of these two to be true (this is unknowable, but its a discussion board and its just a speculative convo), would you rather...

1- Make a move now and go the cheap Cuse-alum route again or

2- Wait one more year and then have more money to spend on an established national winner?

The answer is not "they arent spending that anyway so make a change now"...I know they probably arent. But if you knew it would be one of these two options which would you choose?

As it feels like the board is collectively building a "case" for Josh Schertz, here's an data-backed example of real system, Red. They lead the country in closest distance for 2-point attempts, while being top 15 in 3 point %.

Well, it reads as South Florida is trying to do the same system (easy 2s and 3s) but 234th in 3PT% skews the ability to do so effectively. SLU is doing both at a high level, and the results speak for themselves.

If forced into that hypothetical, I would wait one more year. There's no qualified Cuse alum at the moment, so hiring one would mean resetting the clock for another 3 years before we can get serious and start the rebuild. 1 more year of Red would be quicker than 3 of another Cuse alum.

2 of those 3 are a massive upgrade than what we've seen in years. They would be exactly the shot in the arm this program needs.

That is true. This also falls into the category of the coach can only put them in the position to succeed. Similar to Marquette's data or you could argue that both programs need better talent, but the coaching isn't lacking.

Interested in Schertz. Offense, offense, offense. No idea what he is as a recruiter, but for basketball, I don't think it's as a big deal as football (you can't tell me Hurley, Oates, etc are these dynamic personalities like Fran Brown; they are outstanding coaches first). We need a COACH.

Who says they did? He has a below average ACC head coach contract, at best middle of the ACC. Just because it’s more money than most people think it should be and he’s not earning it doesn’t mean that it’s some conspiracy.

We’ll know soon enough how serious Cuse is on paying for an in demand coach soon.

But as long as we are willing to spend and we don’t go the GMac route - I’ll be happy.

My one real requirement: you have to be a current head coach. I don’t want Seth Greenberg or Tim Crean. I also don’t want Luke Murray or some other assistant who’s never been a HC before. I think Murray is fantastic but we can’t risk it on another guy with no HC experience. Need someone who has ran a winning program before

For those curious, Schertz makes $2m plus incentives on a 6 year deal. The buyout for AA will be low-ish after this year. Buyout won’t matter, but the next pay grade will. Luke Murray they can get for AA salary. Schertz would be $3m+. Theres discussions occurring about AA. I’ll say that.

Suggested multiple times and dismissed. He’s 6-6 this year. He won’t be our next coach. Need to think bigger.

It makes sense that last game was bad really bad from a coaching perspective. Sure there are talks going on about if they would want to keep Red even if they squeak into the tournament at this point.
