Coach Search Options after Autry

Wildhack should provide the board with his shortlist, not the other way around. Wildhack should already be gathering a list of potential coaches and judging interesting via agents. That stuff should have started after Hofstra and if not it sure should have started after Clemson.

A Big part of why we are where we're at right now is because, time and time again, what should have been done was not done, and bad decision after bad decision compounded and steamrolled... And I'm talking about all the way back to the 2nd round of sanctions.

I'm not saying we won't do what's needed and necessary this time around with a new, athletics-friendly chancellor, but the school has a pretty poor, repeated track record in decision making with the big program decisions and I would not be at all surprised if an "alternative" approach is leveraged by the power brokers again. Let's hope that fear is unfounded.

I hope you are right.

My only point is I will believe it when I see it.

That opinion is valid, I am afraid, based on past history. Would love to have those concerns 100% proven wrong, of course, but I have no benefit of the doubt left to give at this point. Just blind hope.

Wildhack doesn't strike me as someone who would not already have a list and updating it as needed. My guess would be he also has enough contacts including Carmelo to get inputs from. He is an educated and experienced professional.

And the only way AA gets another year is if he gets benefit of the doubt with Donnie being out and he comes back for 3rd year and JW feels that he deserves another chance. However, you can’t lose at home with a full lineup and I know JW is not happy with the loss to Hofstra and now Clemson. He laid out stipulations for what needs to happen and that’s not happening so discussions are being had… can AA turn it around? Maybe, but they would need to go on a run we haven’t seen in a long time

"discussions are being had" is the key language. I think that's at least the second time you've said that in the last few days. Hopefully they are, and among the right people -- JW, his key advisers, key donors, maybe even Melo, and hopefully the next Chancellor too (and KS). Last year it was a close call and I think JW knows that. This year it isn't close. A change is needed. Hopefully we can get the best next HC possible. Go Orange!

I still think we should give Matt Langel a look. Probably would come at a reasonable price and seems to know how to coach. Question would be can he recruit at this level.

Langel is a good coach, no argument there. He built Colgate into a good low major program. But he’s not very dynamic of a personality, and he’s still coaching at a low major Patriot league school. He hasn’t been hired at a higher level mid-major despite his success. I think we have to hire a guy from a higher mid major (A10, MWC, American) who’s proven himself at multiple schools. We can do better than Langel. We shouldn’t just hire him because he’s in our backyard.

I think the same thing about John Becker. Has an outstanding program at Vermont and I always thought he would be good here. But some guys are just good where they are. They are really good small school coaches and thrive there.
We need a guy that can step up to the opportunity and crush it. Great recruiting chops. Great coaching acumen. Has a system in place to install. Someone really hungry for success much like Fran Brown.

I think these are great to watch to get an idea of how D1 analytics folks watch the game. This most recent video is about St. Louis's Robbie Avila on offense, but it also gives some insight on how Josh Schertz runs his offense. Avila is a 6'10" 240lb center who can pass like a college Jokic and is shooting 45% from three (he would lead Syracuse in threes made, %, 2nd in 3pt attempts, 2nd in assists, and points scored). He also plays just fewer than 25 mpg.

Funny/interesting point about the graphic listing players with 80+ points as a screener in PNR situations last season (in the video highlighting Robbie Avila of Saint Louis). Our very own Cheeseburger Eddie Lampkin is among those select group of players from last season.
