Coach Search Options after Autry

im not high on holloway at all.

Why?

Seriously, have you watched any Seton Hall games this year?

Holloway’s teams play hard and smart with sparse talent. Holloway wins at Seton Hall with limited N$L funds.

Because Holloway can compete and win at Seton Hall he would do very good at SU which has solid N$L funding and as a top 15 men’s basketball program is a place where recruits want to play at.

I would want a proven head coach Thad Matta would be my choice, he is doing a great job with less talent to Butler.

Matta's definitely on the Back Nine, but he was a very good coach 20 years ago.

Because that's the way it's been for ~50 years.

Familarity / comfort / fear of risk.

But now that the bottom has dropped out, I think the majority have come around to the reality that former ties to the program should be far down the list of evaluative criteria when seeking the next head coach, and not atop the list like it unfortunately was last time.
Look when Guley tore the house down with 27 straight losses. The University went out and got Fred Lewis who brought Dave Bing, Harper, Hicker, and I can't remember his name a 6-8 transfer from Army and turned the program around then left after 3 years.

I have no problems with Schertz but I see that Skinn has been at universities, admittedly as an assistant, that are high pressure, high expectation environments at high level recruiting P5 universities - Seton Hall, Maryland, Ohio St etc. He has experience in a favored recruiting area also, the DMV. In his 2nd year at George Mason- last year, his team beat Schertz’s team for the conference regular season championship and this year both of their teams are currently tied for 1st. Schertz is older (50) while Skinn is younger (42) with both on a very successful path. However I realize that there are no sure things regarding coaching predictions.
No doubt Skinn will be a contender. I’d just love for us to land the most proven guy.

Saw the game. SLU looks very good. 3 years ago when we were looking for a center, I had seen Indiana St and their center Robby Avila who was just a sophomore, a very good passer, 3 point shooter, efficient scorer but slow. I had even posted about Avila on the board but figured he was too slow, and for all his good stats and size, he wasn’t really a great rebounder so probably not a match for SU. I never realized that Schertz was Indiana St’s coach back then, Was surprised to see Avila had transferred when Schertz got the job at SLU and is now a starter for Schertz while watching the game tonight. Small world.

He’s always up and down and an average coach. 8 years and he’s barely over .500. Has had 2 good seasons in those 8. Heck last year they were 7-25. There are better coaches out there.
