Coach Search Options after Autry

im not high on holloway at all.

Why?

Seriously, have you watched any Seton Hall games this year?

Holloway’s teams play hard and smart with sparse talent. Holloway wins at Seton Hall with limited N$L funds.

Because Holloway can compete and win at Seton Hall he would do very good at SU which has solid N$L funding and as a top 15 men’s basketball program is a place where recruits want to play at.

I would want a proven head coach Thad Matta would be my choice, he is doing a great job with less talent to Butler.

Matta's definitely on the Back Nine, but he was a very good coach 20 years ago.

Because that's the way it's been for ~50 years.

Familarity / comfort / fear of risk.

But now that the bottom has dropped out, I think the majority have come around to the reality that former ties to the program should be far down the list of evaluative criteria when seeking the next head coach, and not atop the list like it unfortunately was last time.
Look when Guley tore the house down with 27 straight losses. The University went out and got Fred Lewis who brought Dave Bing, Harper, Hicker, and I can't remember his name a 6-8 transfer from Army and turned the program around then left after 3 years.

I have no problems with Schertz but I see that Skinn has been at universities, admittedly as an assistant, that are high pressure, high expectation environments at high level recruiting P5 universities - Seton Hall, Maryland, Ohio St etc. He has experience in a favored recruiting area also, the DMV. In his 2nd year at George Mason- last year, his team beat Schertz’s team for the conference regular season championship and this year both of their teams are currently tied for 1st. Schertz is older (50) while Skinn is younger (42) with both on a very successful path. However I realize that there are no sure things regarding coaching predictions.
No doubt Skinn will be a contender. I’d just love for us to land the most proven guy.

Saw the game. SLU looks very good. 2+years ago when we were looking for a center, I had seen Indiana St and their center Robby Avila who was just a sophomore, a very good passer, 3 point shooter, efficient scorer but slow. I had even posted about Avila on the board but figured he was too slow, and for all his good stats and size, he wasn’t really a great rebounder so probably not a match for SU. I never realized that Schertz was Indiana St’s coach back then, Was surprised to see Avila had transferred when Schertz got the job at SLU and is now a starter for Schertz while watching the game tonight. Small world.

He’s always up and down and an average coach. 8 years and he’s barely over .500. Has had 2 good seasons in those 8. Heck last year they were 7-25. There are better coaches out there.

Just read some articles on John Schertz. Great life story. Born in Brooklyn, lived on Long Island then moved to Florida as he was a top ranked tennis player. Dropped out of HS and got his GED. Found at a pickup basketball game by a JUCO coach and offered a scholarship. 337-69 at Lincoln Memorial (D2), Turned around Indiana St. going 32-7 his 3rd year and NIT runner up. Turning around St. Louis and is 19-1 this year so far. This is the guy if Syracuse can get him.

He’s the guy! PRODUCTION over potential

I’m a little surprised Schertz born in Brooklyn is not interested in the SU job per reports. Wonder why Cincinnati would be his preference. Need to open up the checkbook and make it happen.

Why don't we keep Gerry out of the discussion if everybody is going to just dump on him. He'll be a damn good coach for somebody significant someday despite the hate here. And I'm not saying he should be the next choice because I'll admit that I don't know.
I love Gerry and hope he has an offensive system developed nothing like ours. I wanna watch Siena and see how tough defense they play. I am not against him as long as he doesn’t do same stuff ya know. Hometown hero to me.

50 years old and never worked or probably seriously recruited the east coast. Yeah NIL but its still relationships. Skinn, Murray and Hodgson all have.

Could've been something like he was overheard saying he would hate to be the coach that followed Boehiem at Syracuse and it was translated into he would hate to be the coach Syracuse. Until he tells our AD he's not interested, it's all just rumors. To me, there's no reason he wouldn't be at least a little interested. Coaching in front of 30K fans every home game has got to be appealing for just about anyone looking at this job.

Agree with this. Just because some guy on Twitter said that Schertz is more interested in Cincinnati doesn’t make it true. He should be target #1 and we need to make it clear to him that he’s our guy until he himself tells us no.

The fact that people allowed this to go to a third year signals management incompetence. Its such a mess right now.
Agree but I think 3 years is the standard, if you’re an AD you have to worry about the optics. Coaches aren’t going to want to go somewhere if they think they’ll have a very short leash

Being a Brooklyn born and raised guy is very different than living in upstate NY. Not to mention he has been a journeyman living in Florida, Carolina’s I believe, and now has become a midwesterner.

Luke Murray would be my choice if we can't get a top tier HC. I think emulating the best program in the country would be beneficial.
I like this call, only hesitation is can Wildhack take the risk of not hiring a proven HC again? Theres been so much Schertz and Skinn talk in here that it’s become an echo chamber, we have to realize Schertz is a top 25 coach now he’s no secret in fact he’s probably the top option on every message board of disgruntled fan bases and for every AD in the country. I’m not saying don’t call him first and pursue him hard, but we must be prepared to go to options 3 or 4.

I know we don’t want to go cheap again, but imo I’d be fine with taking one of the guys this board was obsessed with in the last few years that has cooled a bit such as a Matt Langel or Hodgson, get them a bit “on discount”, and throw big NIL ($10 M plus) at them. Mario Christobal is proof that NIL is the most important thing. We need a competent program building and X’s & O’s coach who can sell to recruits, transfers, fans, and boosters, but there’s a point where marginal benefit of NIL spend is greater than coaches salary

Sha would be a home run hire, amazing coach.

I’m curious how much coaching at their alma mater will factor in for Sha, Skinn, & Speedy Clayton. My guess is not much for the last 2, but Sha has a big east job which is arguably the best conference to be a coach in

If Alex Kline remains in the fold, I think Shaka Smart would be a home run hire. That’s really what is holding Marquette back this season. That’s the thing with this hire, do you need a new coach or new organization? A new coach could be someone that is a good coach, but needs the organization Syracuse has built to remain successful. A new organization is someone who will completely change everything, but is a proven successful program builder and coach in this era.

Kline isn’t tied to Autry so he’s staying regardless.
