Coach Search Options after Autry

Don't know if it's been mentioned and pardon my unstudied take, but I don think any of the assistants bring much value to the program. Recruiting, coaching up etc. Of course if they were wining I'd be silent on the issue.
This is why I am hoping we bring in an experienced coach. Yes the NIL and resources matter but we need someone who will build a program. All the things that have been neglected over the last decade.

Not going to argue with you, but you’re saying we can find an up and coming coach who is so confident in his abilities he thinks he can succeed without a major upgrade in resources? Some in the know estimate that our NIL war chest is no better than tenth in the NCAA.
Not saying change isn’t needed, but it’s a lazy approach to think that alone will solve the issue. Football was successful in 2024 with an up and coming coach, a major NIL infusion, an above budget investment in assistant coaching and support staff and a historic facilities upgrade. It’s fine to hope that can be done e with OPM but myopic to think it’s not essential.
“Some in the know estimate that our NIL war chest is no better than tenth in the NCAA.”
Then why did everyone say in the off season going into this year that our NIL was much improved and competitive and was 5th or 6th in the ACC? I just dont understand the changing narratives.

Alternate perspective: my opinion is that any confident coach is going to think that they are going to turn things around. And given that the program has been on the downturn, it isn't reasonable to think that we're going to be at the top of our game in terms of NIL funding. Any up and coming coach is going to come in here with an insane amount of confidence in their capabilities, believing that they have what it takes to improve performance, drive ticket sales upward, increase fan base engagement and support, which will in turn lead to increased NIL and much higher ticket / gate proceeds to further help feed the beast.

I don't think it is going to be the other way around, where a coach is going to demand the NIL money up front, and decline on that basis alone. I think it is much more likely that someone's going to look at our tradition, see that we have the biggest arena in collegiate basketball, and have an insane amount of confidence in their ability to pack the dome and turn things around. That doesn't mean that our opportunity is for EVERYBODY, or that there might be some coaches who would eschew the northeast out of preference for jobs in other parts of the country.

But I'm guessing that any candidate with the chops might look at the current state, see that we're in the top 5 in NIL within the ACC conference, and think that they can work with that by providing a better on-court product than what we're seeing under Autry. There's more than one way to skin a cat; out-spending everybody in terms of NIL is one strategy, but it is CERTAINLY NOT the only way to be successful.

I think people get locked into these false dichotomies of only being black and white, A versus B, when the answer is probably in the middle:

If a coach can build it, the fans will come. And so will NIL $$$'s.
Excellent post, RF.

You don’t know that either. Much of it is internet chatter. If we had $5m like the internet chatter claims, and a candidate feels he needs $6-7m he may say ok I can raise that. But if he thinks he needs $10 million like a lot of schools have, he may say no thanks. Every candidate is gonna have different expectations. Point is, what we have could be a limiting factor for some not all. NIL is that important today.
Why are you so obsessed with insisting that our NIL is poor? Where are you getting that info? Many CBB analysts said in the pre-season that we had a top 5-6 roster in the ACc.

So nice win for them, but it is more of the same from them nothing, I haven't seen in the other games I have watched. Very strong defense and weak offense.

Defense great held the Hawks 31% from the field and 27% from 3
Offense terrible, GM shot 41% from the field 25% from 3, only 10 assists with 8 turnovers

Again, I don't think he is a bad coach I just don't want to play that style of basketball; it isn't fun to watch for me and it wouldn't be a style of play that would immediately bring the casuals back IMO. I don't want to be in a rock fight every game. It's not enjoyable. That again isn't taking anything away from him as a coach, especially a defensive coach; he seems outstanding at that. Just not what I personally want and like I said we can do a lot worse than him, but believe we can do a lot better.
I’m totally with you, Phil. I’d rather have Hodgson if we can’t get Schertz.

Where did I say poor?

You'll see the difference, when we finally bring in a coach who knows what he's doing. All of these excuses will stop.
Haven’t made a single excuse about anything. Not once.

Peace and love brother.

Hire the guy from Nova Southeastern. Right the ship and then pass the torch.
This is actually a funny suggestion, because it might work. Find a guy at a lower level with a proven track record, and unleash the hounds. Enough of the excuses, enough of the artificial constraining the candidate pool to to people with ties where our program, go. Find the best candidate you can and see what happens
