Coach Search Options after Autry

yep. alum, non-alum. regional, national. i think most, maybe not all, are going to ask about resources/nil available regardless of how they think of themselves as a fundraiser. let's say $10m is the "magic" number. it's a lot easier to get to $10m from $7m or $8m than it is from $5m.
It's the reason I turned it down

Prior to Oats Alabama had been to the tournament twice since 2006. I do 100% agree Alabama in the NIL era recruits itself but they were just another football school playing basketball until he got there.
In fairness, the SEC, save Kentucky used to take Hoop less than seriously. For example, if they thought it would somehow help their football team to cut the sport, they would have, Not as much anymore. Although a few more bowl seasons like the last one, and that might be on the table.

Yeah I totally agree. With how different and upside down the landscape of college basketball is Over the last 5 years, over the last 10 years, etc like someone said an example is people thinking we’re still Syracuse of 15 year ago. I think stuff like this topic plays a huge roll in these arguments/discussions being so contested and miscommunicated while everyone’s thoughts and the actual reality is closer to the middle.

Playing fast and exciting doesn’t always guarantee winning. It might be exciting, but might not beat good teams. I want a coach who gets his team to execute, share the ball unselfishly, plays hard, is physical and is disciplined. Tony Bennett didn’t play fast, but all he did was win. None of the coaches that people are sharing have teams consistently playing this way. A coach is going to ask two important questions: How much is my NIL budget and how much money do I have for my coaching and support staff? His salary might be the least important. His salary will likely be competitive. Honestly, I’m not excited about a single name being mentioned unless it’s Shertz and he’s not coming. He’s likely headed to LSU.

The national perception is that we're a program stuck in the past, and we're considering someone who has never been a D1 HC, all because he played here. This is the problem.
I'm a Jason Hart fan, but not now nor anytime soon.

Cuse needs a Chris Mack type. A guy who has been there and won some meaningful games in March.

If that type is not available you go to plan B. Someone who has won their conference and hopefully has dipped their toes in postseason.

And there should be be a big gap between Plan B and C. Plan C would be someone who coaches a low to mid major who has never won anything nor done any toe tipping.

Generally you should not ever consider a Plan C type. If Syracuse is going to be relevant, you need to hire someone who has already done it somewhere and at some point in time. Why risk another risky hire.

You might not be excited about Hodgson, but a bunch of what you’ve shared isn’t true. They lead the American in assists and turn it over just 11 times per game while being 2nd in rebounding and 4th in steals. He’s won high scoring games and rock fights just this year.

Jerome Tang fired from Kansas st. $18 million buyout, led them to the Elite 8 a just a few years ago. Ksu just not messing around, Cold

Have also lived in all three places. Agree that Capital Region and CNY might have specific draws for Gerry given family/community ties, but Boston with money is a totally different experience. Boston is a major city and Chestnut Hill is gorgeous, offers great schools, and easy access to all of New England and NY.
Same. Lived in Cuse and now capital region. There’s more of a draw for horseracing in Saratoga than any other sports in the area. Plenty of NFL fan for sure but you’re more likely to find bandwagon fans like Duke/UNC or random other teams from across the country than local sports fans.

I agree. Boston is Boston. I know BC is not ideal but if it sucks their he can just catch the Celtics at TD ha

You know the rules, no arguing with someone that doesn’t even have any info on their own argument. It’ll take up the next 3 pages.

I will tell you a name that we could get and really has done a underrated job this year is Chris Holtman, DePaul has been tough as nails this year in the Big East, Holtman did a great job at Butler when he was there as well. DePaul of all schools is tied for 6th in the Big East dont ever remember them that high.

Agree on Hodgson. I think ultimately he gets the job because he wants it and understands what he's getting into. Having the support of Lally is a building block that perhaps others don't have.

The first question any candidate has about us, is our NIL budget. I don't think GMAC is convinced we have what it take$ to compete in the ACC consistently. He's not alone. It's a concern others have.

Anybody who thinks someone is going to take this job and worry about the NIL after is grossly out of touch with today's environment.

Let me short circuit those who think i'm blaming this year's results on NIL. I'm not. We have the players this year to compete. We had the NIL last off season to compete. Its coaching failure that we're not in the ncaa tourney discussion.

But the next guy might not have last year's NIL budget. He might not have Alex Kline to lean into. He's going to have a new AD (that likely will not have the support to move in a different direction at his immediate discretion though).

We have a challenge ahead of us.
I agree 100% with this. I want the best coach overall but the line between money man fundraiser and X’s and O’s guru and players coach recruiter is blurrier than ever.

I’m at the point where I’m going to lose my mind portal season after portal season watching players we want to keep or to get go to other schools. Same with crappy iso offense.

Personally I struggle which is more important some days. Not so easy for a new Chancellor and AD to decide what’s most important.

They’re the most disfunctional team in America. Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more behind the scenes based on what we’ve seen publicly this year.

I know there's a lot of hysteria in this thread, but we're going to be happy with this hire. Some of the smoke here is just that-- smoke.

Book it :)
So you connected with your contact who knows BH to get the truth on him, that is what you indicated you were going to do. Your message back in the thread is there is hysteria and smoke and then say we will be happy with the hire and toss in a happy face.
So presumably your BH contact said BH is a good guy and he will be the coach at SU?

Once again SU is screwing itself over with a goofy timeline. If JW is gone he shouldn't be hiring the next hoops coach.
I think he’s doing the firing. Not the hiring. Sure he’ll have input but that’s like a voice not a decision. New chancellor and board of trustees and new and new ad will make the call.

Hodgson been an assistant for a nationally relevant program on the rise in Bama
Hodgson is known as an elite recruiter, as shown above, not by word of mouth, but by recruiting services
Hodgson has never had a losing season despite never taking over a program that had a winning record the year before he got there
Hodgson has a top 10 offense in college
Hodgson has won a regular-season division title
Hodgson has now shown to turn around two different programs at two different levels
Hodgson has no connection to Jim Boeheim or Syracuse University basketball.
Gerry has done nothing that compares to any of that besides having a nice second season at Siena a place that has a pretty solid program historically and playing his college basketball at Syracuse. His resume isn't close.

Ok….so my wife is an academic and as a result we have lived in Baltimore, Chestnut Hill and Charlottesville. I was raised in DeWitt. Here is the deal….the DeWitt Wegman’s is the 2nd Wegman’s in the entire system. It is a bit of a Frankenstein as it has been cobbled together over decades as their model has changed. It is way too large in my opinion and the only thing fun about it is the possibility of running into Jim and Juli Boeheim. The one in Baltimore is nice but too far outside the city and thus we never went there as it just was not compelling enough to make the hike each way and burn up an entire morning. The Wegman’s in Chestnut Hill / Newton has a great wine and liquor store….which was fantastic during COVID. The store itself is competing with Star Market which has a great fish department and made it the default winner for us. Finally the Wegman’s in Charlottesville is new-ish, the right size, really good meat department, bakery and prepared foods. Their subs and sushi are really good. So overall, the one in Charlottesville is my winner today except for booze during a pandemic which gives the nod to the Wegman’s in Chestnut Hill over the other Wegman’s.

TLDR; every Wegmans in Onondaga County better be in tip-top shape March 15-April 30 in case any candidate for the job stops in while interviewing. Someone get Colleen Wegman on the phone pronto.

I find it ironic that people have complained all year that SU turns the ball over way too much. SU averages 11.2 per game.

There are reasons why Syracuse's 11.2 per game is bad compared to South Floridas 11 per game. It isn't really as close as it seems.

If you are interested, the main reason is the pace of play or Tempo...

USF plays at a tempo that ranks them 12th in college basketball
Syracuse plays at a tempo that ranks them 148th in college basketball

Thus USF gets more offensive possessions per game so them being the same is irrelevant when you factor in things that matter to the equation.

The RF’s point above they take 8 more shots per game than we do. It’s not an apples to apples comparison. Could Hodgson be a bad hire? Sure, but his players play how he wants them to and they have an identity. I couldn’t tell you what identity we’ve tried to implement in 3 seasons here. Red said he wanted to mirror his teams after Houston and our on ball defense has been terrible for 3 seasons.
