Coach Search Options after Autry

IF Wildhack is still as involved in the decision as he says he is, then I think it will be Hodgson for sure. From what I remember, Wildhack really liked Oates when he was at UB.
Just my 2 cents but JW is being kept around to fire not to hire.

Deciding on the new coach tho, no way.

I expect that the same board identified to find the new AD are also the key players identifying the new hoops coach as well.

The #1 interview question is going to be the same for both right. How are you going to rebuild the basketball program? The 2 guys that are most qualified and in sync on that question should get the jobs.

I also think it’s a smart way to have the convos with head coaches now without the media or other programs knowing for sure what’s happening.

I agree.

If u are hired u want to be hired by the next guy not the guy leaving.

You also don’t need the new guy getting dirty w a termination.

He, like Kent is simply working until his contract is up. July 1st is the start of the university’s FY.

What seems to make most sense is to name the new chancellor...give that person a voice in new AD...name the new AD and then have the new AD in conjunction with Wildhack possibly name a new coach.

If people are smart this will all happen by a few days before the portal opens on April 7...so that coach has chance to speak with all the current players.

I wouldn't be surprised if John was involved. The timing is going to be tricky. If the timeline is Chancellor, AD, coach, where does that push us for the new AD to do interviews and select a coach? And if talks are going on behind the scenes with agents right now, who do you think from SU is engaged in those talks? John.

Hodgson..

- Right hand man to Oats at UB. Turns them into top 25 team (which will never happen again) and beat an ok cuse team at Dome
- Goes to Alabama, turns a football school into a consistent basketball force. Known as “the shark” for his recruiting abilities.
- Leaves for Arkansas State, turns that program around, runs into a buzz saw that is James Madison (who beat Wisconsin in NCAA). Arkansas State was rolling probably would’ve won Sun Belt any other year. Next year there they win the regular season.
- Leaves for USF. Inherits sub .500 team whose coach unfortunately passed away a year prior. Immediately is now leading AAC (which is probably the second or third best mid major conference in the country)

Buffalo guy who understands the upstate ny culture when it comes to syracuse basketball. Is he not a perfect compromise for the people who want to keep it in the ‘cuse family. What am I missing?

If Schertz comes here and turns this thing around, he will leave for a blue blood. Hodgson feels like the guy that would stay here forever.

Find the right guy. Thats all that matters. For everybody losing their minds over Hodgson and Schertz, remember ole Porter Moser. Did a bang up job at Loyola and made the Final Four. What has he done at Oklahoma over the last few years????? About as much as Red. No guarantee a mid major translates to P4 or that a former assistant is going to be Nate Oates 2.0, whatever the hell that means

Weeks not days...Should be announcing our hire after the first weekend on the NCAA tournament if the coach is in the tournament if they are not then they should announce ASAP.

The interviews, etc., will all be done. The new coach needs as much time as possible before the portal starts to evaluate our players and start working with GM to identify talent they want. They also need time to talk to and try to get money from the donors. etc

This was posted 2 weeks ago. Do you still believe this to be true? Seems surprising since Hodgson is the only candidate we've heard covets the SU job, so even if not SU's first choice, it makes sense Hodgson is at least a solid backup plan. Other posters are indicating SU may not be in a position of strength and isn't trending towards a big splash hire, so I have no idea why Hodgson wouldn't at least be a major contender (outside of SU politics).

I have heard contradictory information over the last week + yes. His name has come up twice, as is usual when it comes to these things the information is either coming in fast and heavy or slows to a dribble and often the info contradicts itself. It would appear at minimum he is on SU's radar.

I would imagine SU knows who their AD choice is and whoever it is is involved and informed of the basketball coach priorities. I also would also think the future AD has had input on their favorites and acceptable coaches for the position. Just my uninformed thoughts on how I would do this transition and I would bet that John and the new chancellor (who most probably is also already known) are definitely much smarter than I am in pulling this all off cleanly.

I mean, yes and no, right?

There were clear candidates last year — just like there are this year, and just like there are every year. In today’s landscape, the major publications actually do a pretty good job of identifying the top coaching candidates. Will some of them miss? Of course. Will there be an under-the-radar guy who breaks through? Absolutely. Every job comes with its own unique challenges.

Last cycle, the top five names were Ben McCollum, Darian DeVries, Will Wade, Ryan Odom, and Niko Medved. In my opinion, there was a noticeable drop-off from Odom to Medved.

Here’s how they’ve performed YTD:

  • McCollum – 19–7 (Iowa)
  • Wade – 19–8 (NC State)
  • DeVries – 17–9 (Indiana)
  • Odom – 23–3 (Virginia)
  • Medved – 12–14 (Minnesota)

Syracuse doesn’t need to get cute here. They don’t need to hunt for some hidden gem just to prove they’re the smartest people in the room. They don’t need a search committee trying to “leave no stone unturned.” They just need to be smart and hire one of the best coaches available. If they overthink this and miss, it could set the program back even further. But if they land one of the top coaches on the market, the perception — and momentum — shifts immediately if they struggle like a Medved there is still upside in that Syracuse is spending like a serious program should. This isn’t the football program, where you might have to take a flyer on someone no one else is targeting. Syracuse basketball is still a brand a diminishing brand but still a brand.

The school that worries me is Oregon. That job will very likely be open and if Phil Knight decides to fund Oregon basketball like he does Oregon football, not many basketball programs will have more available money for players.

It could be hard for Syracuse to compete with Oregon if it was promised huge funding.
Stockholm Syndrome. Can't see Oregon hiring an EC guy.

My favorite thing I ever did during the time I put in my notice and the day I actually left a job (a job I liked, to be clear, just took a really great offer), I had a slow day (had offloaded my work, completed my transition docs already, had the meetings, was basically just saying my goodbyes each day to my close colleagues):

I went to Keen's Steakhouse for lunch. And a gluttonous one at that. It was like Ron Swanson's dream lunch. Scotch. Delicious meats. Old school NYC locale with vibes from a previous time. Really enjoyed it. Middle of the week. Nice day. Good times.

This has nothing to do with John Wildhack. And me resigning from an ad agency has about 1/100000000th of the import of a P4 AD leaving obviously, but there is something to be said about playing hooky and goinig to Danzer's and getting a Reuben or what not or something like that to do.

Two notes on Medved. Interestingly, he was a guy with former ties to the Minnesota basketball program [team manager], and they may have prioritized that "more" than they should have in terms of the assessment process.

Sound familiar?

Secondly, they had a steep rebuild -- so maybe he isn't doing that bad of a job. They've actually knocked off some ranked teams in the B1G, so they have a good chance to finish above .500 and build for the future. Time will tell.

Notice the first comment….

Oh, he's using Letterkenny references?!

I hope they go hard after who they think the best coach is.

I don't want them to settle or think they can save money by going straight for the guy who desires the job most.

Honestly I think Medved will end up a solid hire for MN, host of circumstances stacked against him this year

Those are my top 2 (with Schertz #1), but will be interesting to see how VCU plays tonight.

Yeah really want to see how Schertz has the kids ready and how they perform after the first adversity for a while at URI. Do they show a winners mindset and play like a team that has that killer instinct or something else? Will be interesting.

Worried about UNC. They might very well be firing Hubert Davis at season's end... Especially if they lose to Syracuse tomorrow lol
