Coach Search Options after Autry

We were ranked the way we did because the media had zero confidence in our coaching, system, culture, all of the other things that don’t get measured on roster alone. We were a very popular dark horse and sleeper to perform in the top 6 of the ACC, etc. Because Media wanted to provide an insurance policy in case those other things not measured on roster alone got better.
I really believe if you parachuted brad brownell in the day before the season started we would be going to the tournament.

At the end of the day all of this is sort of a moot point. The booster funded NIL model is not sustainable but for a handful of programs. Corporate donors have to get involved or their needs to be collective bargaining. I have no idea how this shakes out, but the collegiate sports model is teetering on extinction for many schools.
I believe legislative change is coming at some point in the next few years. The system is untenable.

A serious administration is able to get complete alignment from top to bottom. The program is basically on the line with the decision. We can’t afford to get this hire wrong.

There should be absolutely no politicking. You get the best coach that is willing to take the job, and you give him the full support of the university.

The answer is right in front of you.
Amen!

Freeman is now showing what he really is as an ACC player. He played a couple of games last year. No one really knew what he was. His effort is telling by the fact he has 16 total offensive rebounds for the entire season. That’s very telling. That’s less than one a game. Schools have figured him out and he’s not mentally tough and doesn’t adjust well to the way teams are prepared to play him. The coaching staff hasn’t helped him either. How they didn’t have a plan EVERY time he was doubled yesterday is beyond me. He should have known his couple of options every time he was doubled. He acted surprised.

It’s kind of annoying that we’re going after BH a year later than we should have. This is one of the reasons Red should have been fired last year. BH was at Ark St and would have been a significantly easier hire financially. Now we’ll need to navigate a USF buyout.

Fully supportive if BH is the hire. Just wish the school had the foresight last year to make the move. But I guess there’s more validation BH can coach at SU based on what he’s done at Ark State and USF.

Maybe a slow start because it does take some time, but we would be humming by this point in the season. No doubt about it. The only team in this conference that truly has a noticeably more talented roster is Duke, but Scheyer also has done a fantastic job coaching up that roster, so when you mix great talent and very good coaching versus very good talent and bad coaching you get the result we saw at Cameron Indoor. That’s really the problem. Maybe Syracuse doesn’t have the advantages today than it did 15 years ago, but Syracuse is coming in most nights with an advantage on roster.

Unfortunately it is not correct. Might be close if you add in revenue sharing and the Vegas money that is still going through NIL GO. But even with all of that it’s closer to $8MM than $9MM in player compensation. Not NIL.
And even with that we were no better than ninth or tenth in the ACC.
Yes, $9 million with revenue sharing, but I’ve heard it’s closer to $10 million with the Vegas money. Also, when people are sharing these numbers from other schools, that INCLUDES the revenue share and preseason tourney money, not just NIL. You also have to understand that the rev share was only approved last spring along with the changes and restrictions on NIL, so this offseason will be the first with those changes. I’ve heard SEC schools are going to spend less on basketball next spring, and most Big East schools won’t get close to funding the full revenue share. We need to stop being so negative about the fundraising upside here.

I disagree a little. This team just can’t shoot. You can’t win against good teams without the ability to put the ball in the basket. This team plays small and lacks physicality. Our three guards can’t defend or shoot. We don’t have anyone on this roster who create for others and hit a jumper off the dribble. We lack size too. Fans just want to compare this roster to last year’s team. Compare it to others in the conference. I will say they would be much better if coached better, but the talent level is ok not really good.

Players were there this year to be a bottom of the bracket tournament team. Agreed. But I think most aspire to more than that.
If you build it, they will come. Right now, we’ve had 4 (going on 5) seasons with no tournament and were bubblicous for the last 5 years of JB’s tenure with an old man who was fine with mediocre results and didn’t make changes in scheme, recruiting and staffing and failed to put in the necessary effort. That’s why the donations and fundraising are down. But even with those poor results, we somehow managed to have $9-10 million for player compensation. Do you not think NIL fundraising and donations will skyrocket once we have a dynamic coach who’s putting in the effort and showing big progress with the oncourt product? I do. You can see the effect of that with Fran on the football side, and he had zero head coaching experience. Lots of fans haven’t been donating because Red was an unproven coach who didn’t seem to have the chops from day 1. You hire Schertz or Hodgson, and you have the ability to unleash big and small dollar donors who have been sitting on the sidelines.

We have some very good shooters in Kingz and Betsey. The problem is most of the 3's we take are contested due to the lack of ball movement, solid picks etc.

We legitimately have the raw talent on our roster that is greater than like 90% of D1 schools.

We have plenty of three point shooters.

It’s Red. It’s fine. It’s over. But let’s not depress the talent level.

Couldn't agree more.

Hire a competent coach, and things will swiftly get back on track. Step one is an improved product on the court. The rest will follow.

Good to hear. Gilardino doesn’t post a lot, but he has a history of being right. I trust that his source knows as much as anyone.
Ok, my point is if Red plays meaningful games in March he will be back. So if we are behind the scenes agreeing to terms with another coach, without a AD or proper search w/ committee involved, is it really a done deal? A wink and nod maybe, or lining up some candidates putting feelers out a a number of potential guys. If anyone knows Hodgson and him saying it’s a done deal and that he has agreed to terms verbally then I would believe it. Seems like a lot of moving parts and speculation. He could be a good fit or someone comes out of left field like Fran Brown.

Hop interviewing at BC. They want him apparently. But he’s making waves for cuse job too. He’s got full court press on
So let him go to BC. If they want to make a hiring decision which kind of feels like in spite of Syracuse let them do it. Maybe he’ll succeed too. Really says a lot about the “family” that guys want to directly follow a failed tenure of a family member. Like if you were about the bigger picture and Syracuse they should know it’s best for Syracuse to go outside. If it doesn’t work then maybe it’s worth the convo to see if a Boeheim protege can try again.
