Coach Search Options after Autry

Freeman is now showing what he really is as an ACC player. He played a couple of games last year. No one really knew what he was. His effort is telling by the fact he has 16 total offensive rebounds for the entire season. That’s very telling. That’s less than one a game. Schools have figured him out and he’s not mentally tough and doesn’t adjust well to the way teams are prepared to play him. The coaching staff hasn’t helped him either. How they didn’t have a plan EVERY time he was doubled yesterday is beyond me. He should have known his couple of options every time he was doubled. He acted surprised.

If JB were coach he would never allow Freeman to stand around the 3 point line and jack up 3’s, he would have been pulled, JB would have him playing inside, down low getting rebounds and easier looks. Not 100% on Freeman as he is allowed to do whatever he wants. That said Freeman is basically a Freshman with good upside and shoud stay in school for another year, here or somewhere else IMO.

Coincidentally, I was having this same discussion with my father this past week. How over an extended period of time, we don't seem to have much player development outside of a handful of cases.

Edwards was the recent example that we both came up with. But who before that?

I know I must be missing a few players, but CJ Fair? Gbinije? Those guys were 10+ years ago There have to be some examples in between, but I can't think of any, which is sobering.

And this extends back into the last few years of of Boeheim being at the helm, not just an indictment of Red -- but more of a systemic problem in our program toward the end.

And Rakeem Christmas. He came in highly rated but was extremely raw. Hop did wonders transforming him into an offensive force his junior year but especially the summer between his junior and senior years.

Absolutely, you don’t pick me, I’ll go to BC with my donors, see you on the court. Even if he does, we shouldn’t even be entertaining the idea. It goes against all logic and has nothing to do with Hopkins. National Media are probably going to be hysterically laughing if they find out that we are entertaining going with a family hire this time around.

Kyle has seemed to grow, at least from what we knew about him coming in.

Yes, $9 million with revenue sharing, but I’ve heard it’s closer to $10 million with the Vegas money. Also, when people are sharing these numbers from other schools, that INCLUDES the revenue share and preseason tourney money, not just NIL. You also have to understand that the rev share was only approved last spring along with the changes and restrictions on NIL, so this offseason will be the first with those changes. I’ve heard SEC schools are going to spend less on basketball next spring, and most Big East schools won’t get close to funding the full revenue share. We need to stop being so negative about the fundraising upside here.

I think the negativity I have personally on the fundraising is that every time we up our game there are at least 5 but more like 7 ACC schools that are upping their game more.

Also I have to call you out on that $EC comment. How many times are we going to fall for this “someone heard” commentary that the SEC is going to slow down spending on hoops? That’s garbage they float out there while they throw tens of millions at players, bring in G league guys and 30 year old euro dudes. The SEC is rigging the system every chance get get, they aren’t going to slow down.

Hop did win coach of the year I believe twice and made the tournament, unlike so-called proven winner Hodgson. Washington is hard place to win. Look what his predecessor Romar did with all that talent. How’s hop’s successor doing? Believe it or not, worse than Hop. If success is generally correlated with NIL, Washington doesn’t have much of it at the moment and is a very hard place to win at

Pretty much spot on. Already sounding like this is a little bit more messy than it needs to be. Hodgson has got to convert the old guard backers even if it’s at smaller levels than they would’ve for their guy. And for local media members, if you follow closely, you know who they are that says the fan base has no sway on these things are full of it. It actually does. In a close call between two candidates, they will always go with what they find will be more popular amongst the fan base. If they do see this as a close call that is concerning because it’s not. Hopkins is old school that we have no idea if he can adjust to new school. Hodgson is new school.

I’m sure you are far better informed than I, but I seriously doubt the powers to be would let the fans feeling sway a decision. I’ve been around a long time been a fan since I was taken to games as a young child in early 1950’s. I was an usher at Archibald in 1956-1960. Season tix for hoops in1965 through early 2010’s, my children still have season tickets and there are in their mid 50’s. I wil not go in to specifics but the powers to be make decisions solely based on the agenda at the moment not on how the fans feel. Think Buzz and “get a life” quote. Nuff said.

Absolutely right! I would pull him every time he gravitates to outside the arc and just hangs there waiting to get the ball. He needs to be down low flashing to the post or even outside, but roll back into the lane or the block.

You raise a good point that he is basically a freshman given all his injuries. He needs a firm coach, and someone to teach him. He should stay in school (hopefully at SU), as he is far from ready for the NBA.

Ok, my point is if Red plays meaningful games in March he will be back. So if we are behind the scenes agreeing to terms with another coach, without a AD or proper search w/ committee involved, is it really a done deal? A wink and nod maybe, or lining up some candidates putting feelers out a a number of potential guys. If anyone knows Hodgson and him saying it’s a done deal and that he has agreed to terms verbally then I would believe it. Seems like a lot of moving parts and speculation. He could be a good fit or someone comes out of left field like Fran Brown.

The only chance he has of that is if he makes the acc semis.

there's some big names on that committee. lally, ensley, tirico, ballentine, etc. i'm sure they'll be fine without us. besides, and someone can correct me if im wrong, but i think they're more engaged with the financial package and not necessarily the who unless it's a question of morals or something.

But if Hop is selected, which it sounds like he is a serious candidate based on the financial pipeline he brings, then it won’t be the end of the world. If anything, hiring the young mid major coach with 1 big donor sugar daddy seems like the riskier higher long term and vulnerable to changing winds and attitudes. But what do I know. I'm not calling you old, dumb, or slow. I'd be interested in knowing more about Hop's revenue generation plan - if he can garner significantly more funds than Hodgson (which I doubt) then it would make this discussion more interesting. Going off their coaching resumes, I'd wager that it's riskier to hire someone who has already struggled to win consistently in a power conference and hasn't been in the college game for a few seasons over a up-and-coming coach who has won at two different schools climbing up the conference ladder the past few seasons.

It’s a wee bit easier to make the tourney in the Power 5(guess it was P6 when Mike was at UW) than at Arkansas St or USF. And Hodgson just might make it this year. Hop was awful after the first two years at UW

The optics of hiring Hop would be 10x worse than hiring GMac. We'd be a laughing stock program, yet still stuck in the past.
