Coach Search Options after Autry

I wonder if there is a significant age bias going on between BH and Hop. We’re talking a 38 year old and 56 year old.

I got a feeling that the older the fan or decisionmaker the more they may lean Hop.

We also have to remember a lot of these folks remember the golden age of Cuse hoops differently depending on their age and how much they’ve been paying attention. The old man won the natty when he was 58 and coached some of his best years the next 10ish years until he was pushing 70. Not exactly a spring chicken.

A new 38 year old coach prob scares the crap out of most of our board of trustees who are prob in their 60’s. They already went with youth with Fran too but that was after what 4-5 bust HCs for football.

Wow I missed 35 pages.

If it's Hopkins the message I get is that this school cares more about certain people's feelings than winning and I will spend my time on other things than supporting such an unserious organization.
ditto. Vito’s main point was that hop got royally screwed and that he deserves it.

We don’t owe him squat…

Does the .270 winning percentage in the G League over 6 seasons concern you?
Just to clarify, I preferred Hart over Red 3 years ago. At that time he was HC of the G-league team of 18-19 year old 4/5 star kids that decided to skip school and get paid instead of playing in college. It was basically pre-NIL structure of managing a young team of pros. The problem with the team is it was difficult to win against 22-28 year old pros that were fringe NBA players. But it also gives no indication if Jason can really coach.

He’s not may favorite now. I prefer Schertz or Hodgson. I’d also pick Skinn over any Cuse alum in the running. If I was FORCED to pick an alum for the role, I’d begrudgingly go with GMac.

Once you’re a fan
You’re a fan all the way
From the first game you see
Til your last dying day!
💯
We’ve collectively decided Hodgson is the guy. Time to lock this thread and shoot an email to the BoT informing them of our decision.
I’m a real old guy. I could care less about age. Good coach, great recruiter, great fundraiser. Just a winner. I go back to Bing years. Win just win baby. The coach ca be 8 or 80. Just win. Put some fun bsckyin the games and community.

So, I am not reaching out to my source because of a friendship with Autry separate from coaching, and I don't want to put said person in a difficult position, although said person has recently criticized calls that Autry has made in game. But I still don't feel comfortable with asking.

So my 2 cents will come from my time on the Alumni Board and all that I learned about how the University and the BOT might view a situation with a large existing donor versus a new donor. Large existing donor is a former player, and a consistent donor. The BOT will most likely assume that if the existing donor doesn't get their wishes here regarding the basketball coach, that said person will still donate, as it is already in their hearts and love of SU to support the school.
However, a new donor means new possibilites. I believe they will look towards the new donor. After all, the goal is to find new people to donate who have not done so before. That is gold to the BOT and all who are involved with fundraising.

Good insight

I'm in my 70s and would prefer a coach in their 30s.

Fully agree. Vito’s argument was that Hop got royally screwed and deserves it.

We don’t owe Hop anything…..times have changed and even if he got screwed he still left at the end of the day

Makes sense, but Lally’s would be a “new donor” for basketball is my understanding??

But the when the donor has their name on an athletic complex and has donate 10x what the new donor has and doesn’t currently donate for this sport and will if they go with his coach it seems like a no brainer to go with that.

If the goal in hiring the next men's basketball coach is to hire the candidate who is backed by a new whale donor who's gonna stroke a big check, and who's not donated before... Ok, but that's not a very comprehensive hiring checklist and is a simple cash grab.

I really hope things like coaching acumen, recruiting prowess, and projected capability in building a winning program are on the checklist and weighed heavily.

If the checklist is simply "hire whomever the new check-stroking whale wants", then we deserve to fail miserably.

I'm not agreeing that this is how a coach should be chosen, and if anything, I disagree with it. I am just talking about IF they are using that as a deciding factor. And for the 2 above posters who mentioned that it would be a new sport for the Lally's, it is more the bottom line of money coming into the university in any way. So they may still donate anything that may have gone to basketball to football and new money would still come in. I don't think they look at it as money here or there, but money in total that can help SU.
