In fairness, Doug Marrone parlayed his SU HC gig into an NFL head job in 2012. That's wayyy better than any BC hoops coach has done since the 80s.

Here is my updated take:

Hop as a candidate is still an embarrassment.

If it's truly Hop and Hodgson outpacing any other orbiting candidate, it has to be Hodgson.

If people cared that much about Hop, they should have cared when JB got his second probation.

But we've let the program slide for over a decade and it's time to move on.

In other news, today is national Tortilla Chip Day, so enjoy your chips and salsa and/or queso and/or whatever you like with them.

To play devils advocate I’d like to hear Hopkins vision for the program and what he’s learned from Washington

He was the main lieutenant when the salad days were here in Syracuse. I don’t think he’s the rube you guys make him out to be.

Hodgson may be the man but he hasn’t been under the blinking red eye of Syracuse basketball.

Just saying Hopkins knows the market and must have some insight when we were winning 28 games a year . JAB was late 60s in these early 2010s seasons. Hopkins must have been a key part of it all.

I would be very bullish in him if he’s looking to create a bench of tacticians

It's fine to give him a hearing. SU did him wrong years ago, so that courtesy seems reasonable.

The idea of bench "tacticians" doesn't interest me in the least, though. Basketball isn't football. A hoops coach needs to be THE tactician. A CEO approach simply doesn't work because you need the head man to make quick and successful adjustments in game. All the great coaches have that skill and dragged their teams to wins with their acumen.

If Hop's skill is securing money then let him join the Athletic Department as head fundraiser. We need a great coach.

I didn't realize SU has no interest in paying what it takes to attract great candidates.

I should have known we'd be pennywise and pound foolish. My bad.

I think there are ways to make that decision, and still make the donor know that they are the most important person to the university, and to find other ways to make it up to them. But I see this point also. There are risks in anything they decide. They need to weigh the risks. I would think before a final decision is made that a conversation would be had to see if it would cut ties. I also think that if someone is so "small minded" to let it affect their overall love to the university it begs to question how strong that devotion is. No one donor should have total control over decisions.

This was my fear all along. Especially when you do “cuse math”. They have to pay AA buyout (let’s just call it a few mil) then in order to be 40th highest paying job you have to pay $3.5m a year and give a 5 year contract. So we’re already at $19.5m not counting assistants or other resource needs. So all in you’re looking close to $25-$30m commitment to be top 40 in pay. Which is not even that great. I don’t see SU ever doing that, hence the candidate list …

It sounds like we also are doing DD on Murray and other assistants from top programs.

Granted Hart and Hopkins are awful candidates.

It's not out of line for a starting salary for a first year HC. That would be over a million more than what Louisville paid Kelsey.

Also, I was under the impression for years that Hopkins left and left for good. Washington didn't workout and now all of a sudden he wants back in? Immediately after what I would assume is his mentee failed from his days as an AHC. Like when he was fired from Washington did he even try to get back on Autry's staff? Would Duke hire Jeff Capel if Scheyer had a similar tenure to Red? Ironically when Hopkins left the Northeast it coincided with the rise of Nate Oats and his team including Bryan Hodgson. Just a funny side story in all of this. That 2018-2019 season on paper was fine, but there was also two key losses on that schedule. One was to Buffalo and Nate Oats (Bryan Hodgson on staff) and the other was to UConn and Dan Hurley. The best answer may not be the right answer, but there is a clear best answer for Syracuse right now and that is the shark.

The biggest issue we are at now with other candidates is that they will come in and say

"Where are we at with NIL and how much do you have," etc...

Whereas Hopkins is coming in and not asking that question, he is telling them he can get X
Same with Hodgson, he is coming in through Lally and saying he can get X

So it becomes a numbers game and other candidates will fall off because they are asking for our NIL while those two are producing numbers. So it will be very hard for a candidate other than Hodgson or Hopkins at this point IMO (right or wrong)

It’s like these people have no perspective or awareness at all about optics. You cannot entertain either one of these candidates. Maybe you have a conversation with Hop out of personal respect. That’s it. The fact that insiders are mentioning these two as realistic options means that they’re either being given bad info or the university leadership is truly a mess. Hiring either Hop or Lyke would get us mocked across the college athletics world. Wildhack needs to level with some of these people about barking up stupid trees.

Lyke was hired by the Athletics Dept and not by his choice (if rthe rumors are true)...

And, if true, I am not surprised he's decided it's time time for exit stage left.

So I'm not really sure he's driving the boat here... more like being asked to set the table.

I know, a ton of misinformation out there. That was where Syracuse was at last season and still underperformed. Autry actually did a better job with last years squad towards the end of the season, I will give him that.

Made up numbers. Where did he get those numbers? From some other made up source would be my guess. We might be 3rd tier for all anyone really knows. But that guy doesn't know.
