I think I read 60 pages in ned last night and I'm still 15 behind...

I'm kinda surprised that nobody has mentioned football as a reason for Hop (at least yet, 15 pages in the past). With 30m NIL for basketball, maybe those who make the decisions think they can reallocate more of the funds earmarked for basketball over to football and pursue both at once.

This deal looks like and feels like a trap for the program. You can get all of this money, but you have to hire a coach that wouldn’t get a power conference head coaching job anywhere else in 2026. It’s wrong. Hodgson is the right thing and logical thing to do. I don’t know if he’ll be successful, I’m confident he will. But still this is the right hire, it’s makes too much damn sense. What am I missing here.

Like most here, we don't know what we don't know. I'm not saying Hodgson is the right, wrong, or only choice. I'm saying we don't know all the variables at play that will impact the decision or what is important to who. Whether any particular variable should be meaningful or not is a different debate.

I can see why they got in the unsavory argument with Weitsman, but are they the same kind of arrogant pushy people who have to have to have their butts kissed all the time?

They have their name already in giant letters on the exterior of the old Manley Fieldhouse building that be seen very clearly from the street.

Ask the University. They don’t just put names on buildings to put names on building. It’s not an honor, it’s a donor offering. The university or any organization offers donation opportunities and sometimes include naming rights. People donate to those opportunities and get naming rights and they can control when they want to implement their naming rights. Btw organizations typically prefer for people to implement their naming rights asap because it’s something that helps with engaging other donors. It’s very possible Syracuse wanted the Lally’s naming rights implemented to its full force here. Again, Melo jersey wasn’t taken off the rafters or even the building. I would guess Melo is going to be in the ring of honor sooner than later.

Seems to be a big consideration factor in our decision making processes and a primary reason we got Red to begin with.

If that number is accurate - and not including revenue share or money from Vegas - Syracuse would likely have the biggest NIL budget in CBB for two years. I get why people are not on board with Hop but it’s hard to turn that down.

Yep, nothing is guaranteed. But I can give you a dozen other examples of teams with $12-$14 million dollar rosters that are title contenders right now. Kentucky’s had some injuries too. That stuff happens.

I went through this yesterday in this thread. There's not a dozen teams with that budget. There's 10. Duke and Michigan are title contenders. TT was and their best guy got injured. Every other program is underperforming. I don't count UConn because most of their funding is revenue share.

If the money weren't a factor, I would definitely prefer Hodgson. I am not pro-Hop by any means, but if I were arguing the Pro-Hop side, I would say:

Winning conference coach of the year his first two seasons at Washington is pretty impressive, particularly winning it in a year where he failed to even reach the tournament.

He was always a good recruiter in the past and had some big recruiting wins at Washington as well. Maybe he's lost his touch but I think you could convince yourself that he'd still be a good recruiter for us.

Maybe most importantly, he's had time post-Washington to reflect on what went wrong, time on NBA benches to broaden his philosophies and hopefully evolve from the coach that he was his first time as head coach.

That last point (as well as the financial backing that Bulldog referred to) are the two big keys to whether or not he can succeed if he becomes our next coach. I think you'd have to be out of your mind to not be skeptical, but that kind of financial backing can cover up a lot of mistakes (at least in the short term) and potentially give us the kickstart we need to return to relevance.

Obvious follow up question is: "So we invest a ton the first couple years and let's assume it goes pretty well...what happens after that?"

This ^, I can't stress enough how much of a potential disaster Lyke would be as the new AD. If the new chancellor has any sort of a clue his first act is to get JW to change his mind on retirement, I don't care if you have to double his salary, Lyke is not the answer.

I’m so glad you’re saying this about JW. Hopefully the university backs away from Lyke considering the imminent PR disaster that will ensue. How do you think Haynie would be as chancellor if he gets the job?

How bad ha. It’s the least of my worries how coaches answer questions on these shows but I don’t think we’ll see another coach in our lifetime quite as bad as Autry has been at them so that’s something at least to be happy about.

Syracuse basketball - I don't want it to become just something to watch if I have nothing else to do.

I think many of us don't watch it now even if we DO have nothing else to do. It shouldn't be a chore.

I agree. I actually think Hop could be very successful if he came to SU and had the full backing of the NIL whales. Hodgson looks likely to succeed too.

Hop had zero vision for offense when he was at Washington, and he also stubbornly stuck with mostly zone. I don’t know what to say here. He’s a dynamic and charismatic personality but he’s proven that he’s not an innovator or even towards the leading edge on modern college basketball systems. I get that he could have learned a thing or two in the NBA but I tend to think not. The game is different on that level b/c of the talent, and an old dog rarely learns new tricks. Hodge or Schertz would be perfect.

Kentucky has a 22 million dollar nil roster right.

I agree with the others here. Throwing out huge #’s for nil does not mean we wake up with the best roster.
