I was about to post this CBS list from Norlander after I saw it this morning. I think our targets should be, in order:
1a.) Schertz, Saint Louis—We gotta make a play and a pitch for him, even if he turns it down. We might be the best job to open this off-season, and he's the most proven coach available, so I think you have to try for him.
1b.) Hodgson, South Florida—great fit, huge upside as a head coach, and we probably don't want to miss out on him while he's still rising.
3.) Jarrod Calhoun, Utah State—proven winner.
4.) Luke Murray—I know he's just an assistant, but I think his upside could be Tommy Lloyd high, so maybe we should at least consider him if we can't get our top two choices, even though it would be a risk.
5.) Casey Alexander, Belmont
6.) Takayo Siddle, UNC Wilmington

Side note: Is it crazy not to include James Jones from Yale? He's built an Ivy League power there and is a proven winner, but he's now 62. We probably want a younger, hungry guy who will be here for years. But I could see him at least getting an interview.

My concern w/ Calhoun was he was mediocre or less for 5 years at Youngstown State...and his name is Calhoun.

I think we're very much in the driver's seat here in terms of potentially having our pick of the coaching candidate litter this off-season, unless some other massive job unexpectedly opens up. Red's buyout is miniscule in comparison (he only has $3 million left on his contract and I can't imagine the buyout is that much, maybe $2 million?). We need to gather the funds and then land the best coach we can. We have to do due diligence and can't mistake here.

Addendum: To quote from the pod: "If you take all the jobs that are expected to become available, and you perform at 80 percent of the capacity of what the job can be—I'm not talking best case scenario, I'm talking you do a very good job but not a great job—the best outcome-impact relevancy is Syracuse."

"I tend to think the job with the highest ceiling for sure is Syracuse."

They also added that they don't think it's a lock that Hodgson is the next coach at Syracuse, which I was surprised by to hear. But it may have more to do with the new AD coming in, and so the search still being fluid at this point.

I think that's just the nature of college sports right now for all but the bluest of bloods in their sports. Duke is always going to be at worst very good. Ohio State and Bama football is the same. Even Alabama basketball is going to have meh years. Constant roster turnover is just such a crapshoot.

But I'd kill for Alabama's meh year this year.

If plateauing is having the highest scoring offense in the NCAA, a 22-7 record and 2nd in the SEC, and a project #4 seed in the tournament. Sign me up. That is considered a "down year" for Oats?

I am saying for their talent I'd expect they would be better. They have 7 top 50 HS players on that team. I kind of view them like Louisville I think Louisville has underachieved too. It would be great to be like both, but I think Hodgson would be a great hire and potentially could be one of the best coaches in the ACC after Scheyer and Odom.

I can only hope we land that sorta talent and underachieve like that in future seasons.

They have played a brutal schedule which is why they have 7 losses.

At times, they look a little disinterested. Their defense comes and goes too. They could be an early out in the tournament. I’m not sold on their coach yet either. There’s actually some rumblings in Louisville about him already.

I was talking about Bama they played a brutal ooc schedule. St john's purdue illinois Arizona clemson and gonzaga.

Louisville fans aren’t terribly happy with Kelsey. If he loses early he’s going to get crushed.

One of them also said this about Schertz on the pod, "one of the key figures on this year's carousel":
"I want to say he's gone. I just don't know where he's going... If you had asked me a week ago, I would've said Syracuse for him. And maybe I'll just stick with the idea that he's not going to be there [at Saint Louis]. But I'm a lot less confident in that than I was."
Interesting. I wonder if they think Hodgson is likely going to Syracuse now, and then the other open jobs (or jobs that are expected to open) are less appealing, and he might stay at Saint Louis one more year.

This is one of the (many) reasons why I think a family hire isn’t the right one at this time. Red’s hire burned a ton of patience & goodwill from fans. Hop & Gmac would not get a ton of runway and there’s a very real chance that they get booed out of town when they stumble or take longer to get going. Bring in a bona fide program builder and if he fails early, eh, start new no bad feelings.

Gmac would be great like an Ol’ Roy hire. Let him go establish his cred at good P4 program and when the time comes, bring him in to win and retire Orange.

My guess would be a little of both. Schertz might gamble on himself and think he can get a better job than Syracuse next year. The gamble lies if he has a bad season he might be stuck at St Louis a little longer than expected.

Agree 100%, and have posted similar viewpoint in recent weeks.
 
It's crazy that these big schools in the B1G and SEC don't have the funds to fire and buy out their current basketball coaches and hire a new coaching staff.

They have the funds but choose to spend it on football instead. Schools are spending crazy $ on football.

I wonder if we are slowly moving to a time where the max $20M+ player fund goes 100% or almost all to football.

Maybe it's just be but I'm getting the feeling hodgson is at top of the list right now.

There is really no choice currently if you want to stay relevant for the End of Days conference reorganization that is looming. You must spend on football. That's part of the reason why the potential $30M influx being floated around the new HC hire would be so difficult for any university to walk away from. Even if that influx is short-term fool's gold (my personal opinion), it would allow for more funds to be shifted to football in the near term.

There is also a growing sense that entire model is unsustainable in its current form. Programs in the P4 are already facing significant funding deficits in their ADs. Something has to change. The next 5 years or so are going to be a period of transition.

Let's hope the new Chancellor and AD are visionaries and innovative.
